" However, Fulton was nearly forced to end his career prematurely when, facing a bowling machine in the nets before the 2003 season, a ball hit him in his left eye. He had major surgery, seeing three specialists and was sidelined for eight weeks"
@harrysawyers i thought you said bowling machines couldnt fire balls at those speeds? somebody knows they are wrong! cricket balls are not used because they can damage the inside of the machine and if placed into the machine incorrectly can be inaccurate.
When you tap your bat on the ground like that, it means your ready. Thats what i was always taught anyway.. Im not saying this was his own fault, but it deffonatly wasnt just the feeder to blame.
He wasnt blinded by this delivery but claimed later in his career that the injury was still troubling him. he was called up for england under nasser but was stood down before the test match in question.
@Altiar253 The person using the bowling machine should have been aware that he was not ready and thus held the ball until he was ready. Stupidity is the only way to describe it.
You see that he taps his bat on the ground which in a game means im ready, he taps his bat on the ground 3 times and doesnt look once it's half half of who is to blame.
@HowzatKeeper Tapping your bat on the ground means you're ready to face the bowler? I've played cricket for 20+ years and never heard such nonsense. The first thing you're taught when operating a bowling machine is ALWAYS ensure the batsman is ready before dropping the ball in. Preferably hold the ball up in your hand above the machine and wait for the batsman to look up and give you a nod. Whoever was the operator damaged the batsmans sight and cost him his career. Shocking.
He had major surgery, seeing three specialists and was sidelined for eight weeks, but returned to take charge. One of his claims to fame (according to the Kent website) was that he caught Viv Richards in the final innings of his first-class career. He also works for Sky Sports as a commentator..that is sad...
hattr002. no it wouldnt of split his helmet because its not a cricket ball its a bowling machine ball which are lighter and springier! and obv's bowling machines can get do over 90 and obvs' they can face that sort they always do.
to harrysawyers you obviously dont watch to professional game to know who David is, the level he played and the fact there are plenty of bowlers in County Cricket that bowl 85mph and the odd ball hits 90mph ignoring the well known fast men.
Harrysawyers, two things - firstly, I've watched Fulton in trouble trying to handle bowlers like Waquar (when he played for Glamorgan) in the past. Secondly, if he perfects his shots at 90mph, he'll play them even better at 80mph, so why not practice at the higher speed/ Thirdly, at the time, Fults had ambitions to play for England - another reason to perfect batting at the higher speed.
I have a feeling the guy feeding the balls in was not the most popular man in Kent cricket circles after this. Perhaps he dropped it in accidentally? I've used a similar machine many times and the golden rule is, you don't start feeding in the balls until the batsman makes it absolutely clear he is ready to receive. Fults had hardly got back to his crease when the ball went in. Horrible injury, as others have said.
Bowling machines go up to 110 MPH these days. I'm not saying that this was going at that speed, maybe about 85 at the most. But Dave wasn't expecting the ball and it was probably a bit of a shock more than anything.
@paidiravi Shut the fuck up, idiot. Anyone who's ever used a bowling machine before can tell you that's real. How on earth does anything here make any English person in any way "cheeky"?
To everyone else, bowling machines tend to hit 99 as a top speed, but the actual speed is different from the reading on the dial. I faced the machine at our club once at "79", but as it's about 5/6 mph off when it gets higher than 60, it was probably more like 85. And it hit me on the ingrown toenail. Fffffuuuu-
I cant quite tell but is the helmet he is wearing not have a front guard? Im not sure how the practising works with the ball machines but wouldnt it be better to wear helmets that fully protect? And if not for the safety aspect at least because in a real game you would use a full face helmet so best to get practise in that? Dunno just a thought.
As the host here... David was blinded in one eye from this injury and a lot would argue that it ruined his prospects of an international career. The bowling machine was being operated manually at 90mph and David was practicing pulling/hooking the ball.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
no way was that set at 90 mph you cant even get machins that do 90 and i garentee if that was 90 mph he would not be pulling or hooking them balls unless he was a major county player and his helmet would of split
yes it was 90mph... bowling machines go up to 100mph... you can manually set the speed... do your research fella... and also, he was a major county player, they face 80-90mph all the time
dont talk shit there are only a few real fast bowlers that can hit speeds of 90 mph there would be no county players that can reach 90 mph and you need 2 whells spinning and you need to use proper cricket balls and there not proper cricket balls
well people like Harmison, Flintoff can bowl at 90mph... Fulton opened the batting for Kent.. you face the best bowling... bowling machine balls are hard rubber, still hurt... still damage the helmet
there on duty they dont play for countys that much because there in the england squad and you dont see many pull them or hook because how fast they bowl. by the way how far away from the batsmen stumps was the machine ?
@hattr002 i didnt realise it was a 'rogue' ball, i've always thought he must have top edged one into the gap between helmet peak (or visor) and grill OR been practising ducking- SO I'M VERY APPRECIATIVE that you have set me straight. i am so gutted a promising career was hurt by this potentially avoidable incident. his 155 in his final first-class innings will forever be in my memory! and dont forget fulton was once suggested (by STEVE WAUGH no less) as a future england captain!
and also, i have such huge respect and admiration for David Fulton for being able to return to first class cricket and find a way to play still after this incident!
@harrysawyers You are a complete fool. look up your facts. firstly, bowling machines go up to 100 mph you would know that if you had actually used one. secondly Lots of bowlers can reach 90 miles an hour comfortably including county bowlers so fulton will have faced 90 mph many times in his career.
@harrysawyers ate you stupid, the amount of players on the county curcuit who regularly exceed90 is quite high. and if u look, machines go up tom 99 fool, and the balls are just as hard as real balls, get it right!!!!!!!!
I am a club cricketer in Australia and I face the bowling machine at 80-85 mph, so I am sure that Fulton would be smashing anything at 90 mph on his ribs.
Our machine goes up to 100 mph, as do most ball machines. We use 'jug' balls, which are like a golf ball except the same size as a cricket ball.
@harrysawyers You dont use propper cricket balls in bowling machines. Your right a bout the speed of the ball, but you tend to use plastic balls while using the machine
@harrysawyers you obiviousely dont know much about bowling machines otherwise you would know that they can get up to 99mph. theres no reason why you wwould need real cricket balls.
@jsfbvids You are spot on, they can go up to 99mph, I have done batting in front of these machines at Edgbaston in the nets, so I know about these machines. They don't use cricket balls perhaps for several reasons, they use cheaper balls with dimples (they do at Edgbaston anyway LOL)
@hattr002 -- yes the mechines does 100mph - i know it everyone know its but for some reason that dosn't seems to be anywhere around 90mph - bcs i have faced abt 85mph in nets and i l tell you it's much quicker specialy when we set it up for short pitch bowling - but he looks he got injured
You clearly have no cricket knowledge whatsoever. Please refrain from commenting on any cricket related video in the future, to avoid embarrassing yourself. Cheers.
You evidently lack cricket nouse; most county level quicks touch late 80's and 90ish mph... and they dont all play for the national side regularly; robbie joseph, saj mahmood, amjad khan, liam plunkett, stuart broad (mostly with england) steve kirby, simon jones (when fit) maurice chambers, chris jordan, ryan sidebottom, tim bresnan... overseas players such as dale steyn (essex, warwickshire) and shoaib akhtar (wocestershire) have also played english county cricket. your wrong pal
@hattr002 David wasn't blinded, but the machine was indeed set at 90mph. There's an article on the BBC website about David releasing the video to help alert the dangers of cricket
@hattr002 ahaha he didnt get blinded you fucking spesh, this accident was while preparing for the 2003 season and was ruled out for 8 weeks. He went on to score over 600 runs in 11 matches. Yeah alot of people can play cricket well with one eye...
@Smudger126193 okay he's absolutely fine and can see everything not blind at all, you really are a spastic. "you tard!!" who even speaks like that, sort your life out, shame the incident didn't happen to you, but I hope it does :) "you tard!!"
Thing is, if it was a human operating it then surely he should have been looking a david fulton to see when he was actually ready!? so i think lack of concentration from the feeder, automatic feeders give a beeping sound before release so i doubt it would have been automatic.
okay to be fare to bother parties... i know when your at training the some batsman take there time and look at where there standing... and so often the bowler runs in and stops half way but this is just a freak accident !
i got hit in the head by a fat dude once, i never knew he ws coming in to bowl and as i looked up BOOM! right in the side of y helmet above my forehead!
I think panic & fear took him down. The ball may or may not have been of rubber, but the sheer surprise on his face speaks a thousand words. Hope its a lesson learnt for the operator and player
how come that ball injure him? aren't the balls used in bowling machines made of rubber? the ball hit on his helmet. strange that he fell down. must've hit him somewhere where this video is unable to reach
Apparently He was wearing contact lenses when this happened. and that was probably caused the injury to his eye when he got hit. I think he retired shortly after this because he was partially blinded by this accident.
When i was playing in a game once i was tapping my bat but i wasnt ready and then i heard the bowler slam his feet on the crease n im like ooh sht then i misstimed it and it went for 4 pass the slips hahaha
jimaevans shut the fuck up that shit is hilarious u dont see players diving on the fuckin floor when they gie hit he has a fuckin helmet for fuck sake ive bin hit in the leg at 80 and gave a little bruise dont be such a meledramtic woman!!!
That was a 90mph delivery and the damage to the eye, which was hit flush, was horrendous. Although Fulton made a comeback he was never quite the same player again and retired soon after. The injury came just when he was on the verge of a call-up to the national team.
dosent look so serious its not even hit the grill of the helmet. its just hit the hat type of part but its a leather ball so must have done some damage .
Looks like it hit the peak of the helmet? How did this mess with his eye?

@hattr002 ahaha he didnt get blinded you fucking spesh, this accident was while preparing for the 2003 season and was ruled out for 8 weeks. He went on to score over 600 runs in 11 matches. Yeah alot of people can play cricket well with one eye...

Thing is, if it was a human operating it then surely he should have been looking a david fulton to see when he was actually ready!? so i think lack of concentration from the feeder, automatic feeders give a beeping sound before release so i doubt it would have been automatic.

i got hit in the head by a fat dude once, i never knew he ws coming in to bowl and as i looked up BOOM! right in the side of y helmet above my forehead!
venkat2212 2 years ago
I think panic & fear took him down. The ball may or may not have been of rubber, but the sheer surprise on his face speaks a thousand words. Hope its a lesson learnt for the operator and player
hankmoodyification 2 years ago
dude how quick was that?? like 90 mph :O
MrNLhiphop 2 years ago
how come that ball injure him? aren't the balls used in bowling machines made of rubber? the ball hit on his helmet. strange that he fell down. must've hit him somewhere where this video is unable to reach
MRIYBR 2 years ago
Apparently He was wearing contact lenses when this happened. and that was probably caused the injury to his eye when he got hit. I think he retired shortly after this because he was partially blinded by this accident.

omg that must of heart and he take the bat to long to get ready ass well and who the fuck wasn doing the bowling machine dickhead.
amanbhalla999 2 years ago
Who was operating the bowling machine?
HengistTheGreat 2 years ago
Tapping the bat on the ground repeatedly means you're ready. Having said that the bowling machine operator is also an idiot.
They're both morons.

That was a 90mph delivery and the damage to the eye, which was hit flush, was horrendous. Although Fulton made a comeback he was never quite the same player again and retired soon after. The injury came just when he was on the verge of a call-up to the national team.
So, no actually, not funny.
jimaevans 2 years ago
haha. that was funny and sad. more funny cuz he had a helmet on.

in slow mo it looks like it hits a force shield
mangoman47 2 years ago
They only use soft balls because a hard ball can wreck the machine or vise versa.
Webbster13 2 years ago
no they dont, theyre a bit softer than a hockey ball
