  • Can I buy this on iTunes?

  • I always start to tear up near the end at 9:17

  • omg!!!

  • i fell in LOVE with this particular song in high school when i played with the flute choir. i played the bass flute and this song came out to be my entire solo ;D

  • The Planets... I would so like to meet and speak with Holtz... not about this, but about what he likes to do in his spare time... 'cause I'd think we must like to do similar things... as much as I like his work:)

  • More beautiful than anything. . .. All of these pieces from the Planet Suite. . .. Uplifting and beautiful.

  • People who think this sounds like star wars are probably the kind of people that think classical music all sounds the same. It's more like star trek if anything.

  • @lostinspace771 There's no denying that Holst heavily influenced WIlliams. I'd say star wars sounds like planet suite, not the other way around.

  • Those double basses at the beginning... Unbelievable impressive :O

  • i keep trying to concentrate on something I can not. please dark side dont tempt me!

  • This creeps me

  • i bet the people who disliked this were deaf

  • @Frenchfriekiller Your statement could mean that Beethoven was jealous :-P

  • The Bringer of Old Age... I certainly felt like it, so calm and relaxing.

  • You all know Gustav Holst's The Planets series is where John Williams got his inspiration for the Star Wars Music. Just amazing how this music has come to inspire whats probably the most popular piece of American Music

  • I was supposed to be doing homework, but instead, I found myself staring in amazement at the computer screen. Pure genius.

  • @cuboneluvstorchic1 I have the full score, and one thing I find interesting is that the 1st bassoon and the english horn have cues for every single bass oboe part that they do not have anyway.

  • The last fifth of this piece always makes me feel out of my body and bittersweet. And don't you love conductors? The world over, they have crazy hair.

  • @marginallymental Funny, a lot of people tell me I should conduct, and it's probably in my near future... My hair is totally nutty, sticks straight up.

  • @Polistotle i actually felt the same way. the montreal symphony orchestra did a version in 1987 that has much more depth and volume.

  • This movement always has a sadness for me. Warning: Do not be homesick and this music is playing!

  • Talk about a living stereotype. This performance is technically perfect but utterly lacking feeling, nuance, or interpretation. It is like 75 computer scientists clocking in, performing their designated task, and then clocking out.

  • at 1:50 what instrument is that

  • @alissarocks16 I believe it's a bass clarinet

  • @alissarocks16 It looks like a bass oboe.

  • @alissarocks16 its called an English Horn.

  • @alissarocks16 lmao three different answers :P

  • what this song got to do with saturn

  • @sonygjh You stupid?

  • @sonygjh Well, if Gustav Holst knew what we know now about Saturn, he wouldn't change a thing. The song is about Time.

  • @sonygjh It's considered by most people to be a representation of the astrological figure of Saturn.

  • Why didnt they get a round of applause!?

  • @MCZakalakin you only applause after you play all the movements of a symphony, or in this case, a suite. Unless of course they only play one movement.

  • Bringer of old age. I am 67 but this lifts me, doesn't age me!

  • Beautiful, Peaceful, Calm, Paced, Incredible!!

  • @ceteran0101 Disney made Fantasia, which was a movie cartooning classical pieces. It had The Rite of Spring in it by Stravinsky. But you're right, Holst is awesome. I love what classical music/Romantic music/Baroque does for the soul it all has the power to move you

  • There is a wonderful documentary about Holst on BBC4 - youtube wouldn't let me copy the url unfortunately, but its called In The Bleak Mid Winter.

  • Miles above Jupiter as a piece of music and a better looking planet to boot.

  • Is that Michio Kaku conducting?

  • @Ashbringer108 hahaha, i thought that same thing in a previous vid i saw of them, i went in order of the songs, and i left that same kind of comment.

  • im playing jupiter

  • This is not as good as uranus which kicks ass. Wish I was in a higher orchestra to play it.

  • @bismarck996 haha "ur anus which kicks ass?" Just kidding

  • That conductor's hair is glorious.

  • Great tune!

  • the effect of that menacing line in the bass at 0:50 is really enhaced by the appearance of the central bassist!

  • Which orchestra is performing this, and who is the conductor?

  • @yankeewriter: Its the great Seiji Ozawa, former conductor of the Boston symphony orchestra...,he has made numerous recordings of LOTS of modern masterpieces besides this one!

  • @xtremenortherner This can't be Ozawa; I've seen him in other videos and this is definitely not him. I think it's Tajiro Ilimori...

  • @yankeewriter :I'm not sure of the orchestra,though...,

  • 0:45

  • This almost brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.

  • This almost brings tears to me eyes every time I hear it.

  • Our city youth orchestra is going to play this. I don't know where we're going to get that many musicians, does anyone know a bass oboist around?

I wish I could find more of Holsts work, there's barely any others that I can find besides the plants suite. He's written some other really nice music besides the planets

  • @drgabrielsoileau Generally the oboist assigned to the part rents or has the orchestra rent the instrument. Very few people own one outright.

  • Holst said he was thinking about the astrological planets when he composed this magnificent, magical Suite--but we hear the real Saturn itself in all its timeless frigidness--distant--circling around in the depths of black space. Loved the barren sound of the bass oboe at 1:44--if Holst had used an English horn, it wouldn't have had the same coldness. The touch of warmth in the final theme is perhaps the beauty of Saturn's rings.

  • @windstorm1000 I don't think the English horn can play that low anyway...

  • I love it

  • is it me or does anybody else hear the first two notes of "the light side of the force"?

  • @Rufio60 John Williams was influenced by Holst, and when asked to write the music for Star Wars, was told to make it sound something like Holst

  • @happysack1 Glad I looked up Rule 34. I originally thought that you meant that "Peace is good for business," but that made no sense.

IX. Thou Shalt not threaten other viewers with Bob, love, or death by evil clowns in the middle of the night.

  • MILK INC ECLIPSE ! ;D

  • @frefa1994

    retarded flemish...

  • I love the way we all speak different languages, have different cultures, but all speak one commen language of music. we are united by the beauty of something so amazing as the planets and their music as composed by holst.

  • @ramenlord232 what if i do the opposite u just said? thou ( meaning you) are retarded!!!

  • @ramenlord232 as well, no "first post" crap

  • @ramenlord232 I see a contradiction between decrees V and VII by means of reverse psychology.

  • @ramenlord232 Hey best friend, you didn't follow IV.

  • @ramenlord232

    What is the penalty?

  • @ramenlord232 I. Justin Bieber created 10 accs and disliked

II. Kinda did so with the first one, didn't I?

    III. ...Ooops...

IV. HALO REACH IS F**KIN' AWESOME!!!

    V. Thumbs up pl0x

VI. In soviet russia, Instrument plays you!

    VII. Errr.... no

    :D

  • jupiter is still my fav but this is pretty good too like all of gustav holst's pieces XD

  • IS THAT MICHIO KAKU???? HE DEMONSTRATING HOW GUSTAV HOLST CAN BEND SPACE AND TIME WITH HIS MUSIC AND CONSEQUENTLY MAKE ME JIZZ MY PANTS???

  • @akkiunderling ha HA!! I was totally wondering the same friggin thing!! (um.......... except for the jizz thing..ewe....) :-(

  • @akkiunderling its not, but it looks like him huh

  • @akkiunderling

oh i love you dude!!! LOL great minds baby, great minds!!

  • @akkiunderling

    Omg i love you.

  • @akkiunderling ROTFLMAOBBQ

  • amazing

  • Used to have a test card of the Jodrell Bank Radio telescope on BBC2 with this playing when I was 4 or 5 years old. Blew my mind then, still does. I think it had a major effect on my life. :)

  • Comment removed

  • Mars-The Bringer of War is often used as a theme for The War of The Worlds. I think this would be an appropriate theme for The Time Machine.

  • Alto flute? Bass oboe? Good cow, Holst and I share an affinity for obscure instruments.

  • @mbrsart what about the contrabass flute? I've composed a song that used it for my ex girlfriend.

  • @plane15man Yeah, CB Flute sure has the "holy crap, that exists?" thing going for it, but I've never really liked its tone. In my mind, there's doing it, and then there's overdoing it. (The 12-string bass guitar, for instance. Not the 4-course, but the 12-course)

  • @mbrsart Don't forget Stravinsky's use of a piccolo trumpet and Wagner tubas!

  • @CharlieBladeRemus Ah yes, the Wagner Tuba. I still haven't heard one.

  • Come to think of it, George Oldziey appears to may have used the "negative" segments in this piece when he scored the "death sequence" theme for Wing Commander IV (5:31) , though played a bit slower.

  • I swear some parts of this song sound like something I've heard in a Ren & Stimpy cartoon or two...

  • @bub777 accually, your not far off, theres an episode of R&S called Space Madness where they play the 4th movement from New World Symphony # 9

  • the 1st 3-4mins are totallly ROTS

  • revenge of the sith anyone?

  • @jonwackers10 well the Star Wars soundtracks were taken almost directly from The Planets, so yes. lol

  • @rockster07 well yeah, knew that, was just wondering if anyone else realised which particular episode thats all. Have to admire what John Williams did to "meat" them up tho :)

  • @rockster07 He took them from elsewhere as well, like the Rite of Spring.

  • this is one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever heard

  • The bass oboe is beautiful...

  • @mrbassooner1 I'm glad other folks think so too!

  • So beautiful...

  • @Budguy68

Maybe that's why you are not the conductor of this orchestra. You have your mind in your pants, not in the music.

  • @Budguy68 You be trippin'

  • Im a metal head, i mean like dying fetus, behemoth, emperor and all that is satanic, and I can even appreciate the splendor of this piece. One thing I really like is the contrast between Jupiter and this one. They really feel powerful but in vary different ways. This omnipotent, while Jupiter is more grand an energetic. Its all very overwhelming to listen to. I believe Disney made a 45 min animation about the planets and the whole score is played during the film. Its definitely worth looking up.

  • @cateran0101 ive been trying to find the film you were talking about but i cant seem to find it. any suggestions?

  • @cateran0101 not all metal is based on satanism in fact only about 5% of metal is based on it, im a huge metalhead like all spans of the genre thrash, gring etc, also love most kinds of music i will agree these pieces of music are powerful

  • @rockstix i think he meant, he likes all that is satanic. not that all metal is satanic. :)

  • @cateran0101 Cool seeing other metalheads appreciating classical music :) Keep it up man! \m/

  • I read Asimov's Foundation series with Holst's Planets playing as a soundtrack. Saturn in particular never fails to conjure up images of cosmic splendor in my brain. Hooray Seji!

  • all the planets are great performances.

  • This is absolutely a stunning performance. The "Saturn" movement of this orchestral suite is one of the most gorgeous works in all of classical repertoire.

The ending section starting at 6:44 never ceases to give me chills at the sheer beauty of Holst's mastery of orchestral color and orchestration.

It brings tears to my eyes.

  • This is pretty great, but Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic owns this piece, and basically the entire suite. Now thats power.

  • the video uploader should credit the conductor and orchestra at the very least

  • The beginning reminds me a lot of the title sequence of "Alien"

  • @tfcdomprice BINGO!

  • this is amazingly beautiful...

  • Not crazy about the low brasses sound. Not terrible or anything.

  • a bass oboe too! wow Holst really liked to use rare instruments in his pieces.

  • wow cool there was an alto flute in the beggining.

  • hmmm... not much at all like starwars, but far more like Jerry Goldsmith's Star Trek. It possesses the contemplative and adventurous overtone which culminates in transcendent glory by the end. Star Wars is more direct and archetypal than this. I find this entire Op.32 was heavily relied upon when scoring Trek.

  • @moviemaker85 It really sounds A LOT like starwars, especially the beginning. I think you are comparing it to the main theme

  • @Felinestance this piece was created BEFORE star wars. where do u think the imperial march got its inspiration?

  • @americassuiteheart1 I never said it was created later, I just said it was very simiilar

  • i love how the violins get ready!

  • wow thats a long flute!

  • @Gabbs5522 It looks so BIG in her little hands.

  • Alien......

  • Looks like the conductor kind of gave the horns a cue to let off on the sustained note there at 3:48...

  • OMG EPIC LOW BRASS, CELLO AND BASS!!!!!!!!! FTW! yay

  • brass kicks ass in this song

  • @TheManCave1990 but kicks more ass in uranus (no pun intended)

  • @TheManCave1990

    *rimshot* :)

  • @TheManCave1990 - If you realized you're "unintended" pun, then why didn't you just change your comment to not include you're "accidental" pun?

  • @TheManCave1990 LOL!!!!!!! I know you didn't mean it that way, but shit that was funny!

  • i love the sound of the bass flute in G (also called an alto flute) in the beginning. it really adds tonal color to the piece. so does the bass oboe at 1:43

  • @classicalnut1

    LOW REEDS FTW!!!

  • These are great!

  • And, who, pray tell is this illustrious conductor? No one seems to mention it anywhere. Thank you

  • Seiji Ozawa, jpn's number 1 conductor.

  • all orchestras should have a euphonium

  • Their performance is great! But the sound quality isn't that good.(hizz int he background) Plus some of those Asian females are fuckign hot!.

  • Star Wars esque

    I think

    maybe

  • more like star wars is holst-esque

  • Yeah, this suite was finished like in 1917, over 50 years before star wars.

  • @ablougabla HHEEEEELLLLL YYYEEEAAAAAHH

  • @ablougabla Star Wars was based off the planets.

  • @asuperpower right you are!!!

  • I admit the conductor's Beethoven hair really threw me off, but this was a good performance.

  • i lol'd

  • @ScottZirpolo Looks more like Liszt hair, IMO.

  • love the music geeks out here : 3

  • Bassflute in g is beautiful sound

  • Another movement that's too slow. Saturn isn't supposed to be all in one tempo either. Holst marks several tempo changes during the opening "march" itself. Nice organ pedals though!

  • I agree the tempo in this recording isn't very good, but otherwise it's very good.

  • the instrument at 1:52 is indeed a Bass Oboe, also known as a baritone oboe. it is pitched an octave lower than the regular oboe. it rarely is ever used.

  • Isnt it a contra-basoon

  • never mind wrong instrument, sorry.

  • also, at 8:10 at the bottom near the center is the Contrabasson, which is a standard accessory instrument in an orchestra.

Holst wrote for a larger than average woodwind and brass sections in The Planets. 4 Flutes (1 doubling picc., 1 doubling picc. and alto in G), 3 Oboes (1 doubling Bass), E. Horn, 3 Clarinets, 1 Bass Clarinet, 3 Bassoons, 1 C.basson, 6 Horns, 4 Trumpets, 3 Trombones (2 Tenors + 1 Bass), 1 Euphonium and 1 Tuba.

  • @bigpapasj 1 euphonium.... awesome. Mad props to Holst for including it.

  • euphoniums are awesome.

  • Wish it were used more often - these obscure instruments are cool.

  • @jeffrags2 If they were used more often then they wouldn't be obscure, would they? :)

  • oh snap

  • Who fuckin caughed at 7:24. Get the fuck out! Im soooo pissed!

    Almost good.

  • Is coughing technically a wind instrument? :-P

  • 1:52 what instrument is that?

  • It looks like something crossed between an oboe and bass clarinet... Do bass oboes exist?

  • they do! There is in fact a bass oboe in this piece, starting right before rehearsal number 1

  • @muziknurd384

i thought it was an english horn but its prolly a bass oboe

  • bassoon?

  • contra basoon

  • ITS A MONSTER!!!!!

  • @PanzerTankTBone a Bass Oboe im guessing
