Its good to see other ppl talking about jiu jitsu, ppl say all I do is talk about jiu jitsu, but they talk about their shitty football and stupid ass baseball all day. I feel i'm alone in liking this stuff. I hate how this art doesn't get the respect it deserves. bjj ftw!
This is motherfucking brilliant. Are there any explanations of similar lucidity and completeness for other, non 10th-Planet-specific guards, like classic closed guard?
You can buy the 3 dvd set mastering the rubber guard, or the book. But these 3 videos are great. I would really like to hear from some rubber guard users, hit me up, so we can exchange info on how to tighten our game up.
I use rubber guard. Let's be honest, YES, you have to be very flexiable to make it work. It will work some with a guy that is only a little flexiable, but such a person would be much better off playing a more conventional guard. To make this guard truly effective you need to at least be able to get your knees to the floor in the butterfly stretch. Any questions about rubber guard you can ask me, I love it and play it all the time.
mission control is the term used when you're in rubber guard, it's when your heel is on the back of his neck and you have your wrist around your ankle
This is the most mind blowing explanations for the Guard that I have ever heard from anybody, his scientific break downs and his fluid explanations are just brilliant.
Sup, What keeps him from standing up, and using leverage to break away from it? I know your suppose to be really good at it before it works, but I had my friend in Mission control, he stood up, he said "using leverage" and then slammed me down Lol.. I was squeezing my hardest too, so any suggestions on that.. maybe kick his legs next time so they are weak so he cant stand up?
Either your leg isnt high enough , or it is and you aren't curling down and pulling your ankle down hard enough. Also make sure your other leg is curling in and down , or else he will just pass.
well clearly Bravo would be better at it, considering he invented it and modified it and came up with the submissions that is possible from all the Rubber Guard positions
I'm sure lots of folks would talk shit regarding the x-guard before Marcelo Garcia ruined everyone with it. If you don't think rubber guard is a game you could play then don't do it. It isn't for everyone. Adapt what you like to suit your own body, that's the beauty of jits.
What an idiot. Would u go into a kickboxing school and say kicking to the head takes super flexabilty and give up? No, you would stretch to get better. Same thing here, and once u drill the moves you hit them as often as u hit any other move. It's not tricky, and no special timing needed, just practice and hard work. Some of u guys are dinosaurs and your gonna get left behind.
The amount of flexibility you need to do that truly effective is ridiculous, also it takes more energy and it's harder to do that guard, not sure about how more effective that is from the 'standart' guard, might be more effective in MMA than in usual jj fights, then again, once it widespread more, much like what happened to bjj, ppl will learn to counter, and the moves like gogoplata are very ninja to execute, need perfect timing for that, you only do it when your enemy is a master of defense
That's why he explains you need to spend serious time on each position. Watch Jason Day vs Alan Belcher for some of the best use of rubberguard in American MMA
if you have the money, you can get Eddies DVD Mastering the Rubber Guard DVD. In it, he explains his entire guard game plus ways to develop the rubber guard.
My training partner and I have been working rubber guard for about 3 months now and there is no real way to get to a heel hook. Most of the attacks are either arm-locks or triangle chokes.....twister set-ups have a shit ton on ways to heel hook....purchase "Mastering the Twister."
I have not trained/practiced the twister, as I thought it too complex. I am working on improving the speed and power of my basics, rather than trying to increase their complexity.
Do you find the rubber guard is effective against a much heavier much taller opponent ?
i kinda just started using the rubber guard and i love it but mine's got some holes the big one is this: how do i keep them from sliding through my rubber guard upp over my head, instead of sliding back which he adressed here alot of guys slide foward so my guard is around their hips, how can i stop that?
It sounds like you're getting stacked. Make sure if you're in mission control or New York to keep your opposite foot posted on his hip, and push him back.
Also, you need to make sure you get chill dog; you can't get stacked in Chill Dog.
maybe i don't think so cuz hes not standing or trying to come to his feet to stack me im prolly missing something though i've gotta go back and re-read mastering the rubber guard
yea i know but i wasnt getting stacked, i realized what happened though; i wasnt keeping my free leg tight enough to his body to hold him in place i fixed it now
marcello montierro has came to my bjj class once or twice for seminars, and training pracices and stuff. but sadly, ive never been in class to train with him
then you need to spend a little bit more time in the gym working on your flexablity and proabbly your conditing as well. everyone unless they have an injury should be able to reach this flexablity you just have to strech more to do it.
Do you know any stretching techniques, that would help, I'm bout 6 foot 240 lbs 17%bodyfat, I alread and getting close to doing the splits, but rubber guard requires flexibilty from other angles, any advise welcome?
if you can pick up e.bravo's 'mastering the rubber guard'. it has a stretching routine in it. pretty basic. he says to just stretch A LOT and after a few months there will be drastic improvements if you stick with it.
Have you ever seen someone put their foot behind their head? I know this sounds extreme, but start by pulling your foot up to your chest. If it begins to be easy after a couple days raise how high it is till eventually it's head level. That is basically how you are sitting when someone is in your guard. It's what i've done and rubber guard techniques are becoming increasingly easy
I usually start out sitting straight up, but every so often I will do it on my back. The reason I do it on my back is because it is a more realistic feeling as I can bring up my other leg like I have someone in my guard. I feel that sitting up helps with the flexibility more.
I've never had flexibility issues with mission control oddly enough. My left knee feels a bit odd but I fuxored that thing to death (ankle crank gone wrong) so I've learned to live with odd feelings there.
Are you lying flat on your back? Some pple can do it that way, but for the majority of us (myself included) it's better to shift the hips out towards the side of the leg your pulling up.
I may just be reiterating common knowledge though... If so, I apologize.
I can rubber guard from just about any spot. Like I said, the flexibility was never an issue. I've been able to put my feet behind my head since I was young, I can put my legs all the way down in a butterfly stretch and then put my forehead nearly to the floor, etc.

I think the accepted "test" is getting the leg behind your head. butterfly stretch is a tad different. Im sure both will be benificial.

Does anybody know if the rubber guard is only effective if your extremely flexible?
knowles27 2 years ago
the basis is to be flexible. you need a certain amount of prerequisite flexibility for this guard. but it's worth it.
kronichee 2 years ago
Thats what I thought. I found it really difficult to move my foot close to my chest for the gogoplata.
knowles27 2 years ago
Well, you don't have to be EXTREMELY flexible, but the more flexible you are, the more effective it is.
