Go to Walmart purchase a 14 ft tow rope. They come with 2 metal hooks on each end, and can support 2,266 pounds. make 1 knot on each end of the rope a few inches from the hook. Clip the hook over the knot and your done. Takes 5 minutes and cost 12 dollars.
Thanks for the vid. I just made one similar to this. For those that have problems with the adjustment sliding I think it is cuz the straps are made to prevent the loop from getting bigger such as when strapping cargo. You probably can reverse it so that when you pull on the loose end of the cable the cam prevents the loop from getting smaller. $150 for the trx is a rip off.I think they could have market it better and charged a lot less.
Been a rock climber myself, I pretty much had everything laying around some how. I just bought a couple meters of tubular webbing for less than $5 USD (can take up to 13kN), took the buckles from an old and retired harness, and less than a dollar for the pvc.
So as I see it i just saved more than $150 bucks, SO THANK YOU SIR!

Or you could be safe and just order a TRX from the real website. It costs as much as it does because it is worth it. While you are at it why don't you just go build your own BMW for cheaper?
Stevo - Awesome tutorial. I think I spent more time trying to figure out the knot than I did actually building the system. I had to use 12 ft Lashing Straps as that is all that the local Ace Hardware had here. Due to a Family discount my entire system including 3 lashings, caribener, rope was net cost of $13.96. My 17 year old son and myself have just tried it and think this will be a great addition to our already array of fitness products. Again Thank you for sharing.
I found one problem going with the Home Depot lashing straps. The straps have a suspension weight of 200 lbs and a break weight of 600 lbs so I thought my little 170 lb body would not risk a breaking issue, I was wrong. The buckle on the "non-handle" section failed on me while doing dips. Luckily I caught myself. I'm taking the straps back to Home depot for a refund and search for stronger straps. I'll re-post what I find. Would anyone know where some stronger straps are available?
@mstng50l Dude....I just got my lashing straps at Harbor Freight tonight (online also). The working load for these yellow ones is: 330LBS, 1,000 breaking......and they are only 5 bucks for each two pack. Yesterday I was very disappointed by wasting my time driving to these following stores with no luck: 3 local small town hardware stores, plus Walmart, Lowes, Tractor Supply, and Auto Zone. I just completed making it...it works good, now I have to learn all the moves.
@somps33 I just saw the lashing straps at Harbor Freight.com and I'm going to pick them up tomorrow. I hope the buckles are held together with something tougher than a simple spring clip. Thanks for pointing those out. Please post your pros / cons of using these lashing straps!! I'll do the same.
@mstng50l OK, after second look at my contraption this morning, I am having some second thoughts about the ruggedness of the Harbor Freight straps, they should be OK to get started, as they were cheap$. However, as Stevo has stated that REI.com has better Heavy Duty straps that I'll probably upgrade to later. Initially I think I was too euphoric because I finally got to make the damn thing. PROS: Cheap, CONS: not sure how long they'll last for the long haul.
@somps33 I've set my trainer with the Harbor Freight straps and it seems to be holding up fine. Once I anchor my system to the ceiling, I'll give it a proper testing and post results.
@somps33 One last thing, please let me if you're able to find heavier duty straps with the cam feature. The harbor freight handle 300 lbs workload. If you find them, please post where to find them and cost.
@mstng50l I haven't really had a chance to test my Harbor Freight system as of yet, but I'm convinced I'll have to upgrade. The REI.com website has some nice yellow ones called: Riverside Heavy Duty Utility Straps - 12 ft. for 14$ a set.......rating of 1400 lbs break strength. Hope this helps guy. I just hope that some point my gas and purchases doesn't just add up to the cost of a real TRX, hey, just say'n.....
@StevoReed I made this for under $30. I used cloth electrical tape instead of hockey tape because hockey doesn't exist down here, hence no hockey tape. Thanks for a great tutorial.
I just finished making this last night... I even made my own door anchor! Thank you so much...This works just like the one at the gym and it was less that 20 dollars. You are awesome!
A nice clear video, thanks. As someone who works with rope and webbing regularly, two comments on your knots. 1)You tied the bowline backwards, which according to some research reduces the strength compared to a regular bowline. 2)A bowline is not very good for webbing. A water knot (a.k.a. tape knot) is ideal for working with webbing.
I had some problems with the lashing straps that I purchased. The problem is that when weight is placed on the tag ends the nylon slips through the locking mechanism. The reason is because weight is not supposed to be placed on the tag end as this has the same effect as pushing the button to release the tension and pull the strap through. Any help would be great, thanks!

do you have a link to the yellow lashing strap? i'm trying to figure out what the black 'buckle' is on the end and how it works (you slid it, yet you tugged and it stayed).
also, could you stick the pvc handle in the loop formed by the lashing strap and tie a bowline at the other end to connect to the caribeaner (basically reverse)?
Just made mine. Cost $40 Australian dollars. Bought 1 carabiner, PVC piping which I cut myself, 2 2m lashing straps with 300kg strength and 1 6m one. Cut of some length from 6m strap to make the foot straps. And attached to my pullup bar which is attached to my door. Took around 30-45 minutes to set up, most difficult is setting up the bowline knot. I weight around 60kg and did an intense workout and no safety concerns.
Do you think using some gymnast rings for handles would be effective or no? I want to make some with gymnast rings and I would still plan on using my feet in them as well, what do you think?
Thanks for the vid. I bought lashing straps from harbor freight for $3.99 1x12 for a pair, and they have a 330lb break strength rating. I just keep going around in my mind if they are strong enough to do BW exercises and to pull a huge truck tire around. I'll check back if they break on me ;)
you frikin rock! thank you soo much for making this video! i was thinkin about actually BUYING one, silly me! you saved me so much, im sooo excited to make mine!! thanks again!!
@sthegameisover I could, but Ross (over at RossTraining, google it) already did that. He used my tutorial and then posted a video of him using the device. Plus, he's way more beast than I am :)
@racsop70 You can take another 4-5" piece of PVC pipe, slide the top strap through the pvc, put it on the other side of the door, and then attach it as usual. It will hold just fine that way.
Awesome video! I am just starting out as a mobile trainer and boot camp instructor and am on a budget for equipment. Your video literally saved me so much money. We got everything from Home Depot for $24. Got black straps, black pvc, and black rope. Also tucked the foot rope knot into the pvc so the entire thing looks completely professional. I cannot thank you enough for posting this video!

hi stevo. i saw this on ross enamait's blog. i wondered if you could please tell me the exact make of lashing straps you use? i live in the U.K so I'd have to order them online. Only I have had trouble finding some that I think are sturdy enough. Thanks!
@junglephonik I actually found straps that I like way better than the ones used in the video. Go to REI's website and order the 12ft heavy duty utility straps (you can cut them to make foot straps or to fit the height of the anchor point). Hope this helps.
@junglephonik I also live in the UK, to find sturdy straps look for the type used in haulage on lorries they will take anything and what I used, you could stick a 20 stone guy on them and they would be fine, and they arent that expensive if you look around
Thanks for posting this! I'm looking for low price ways to get a great workout. I'm going to go build one of these right away! My only suggestion is that a bowline is not the best knot for the foot loops. A type of bend would be a better option because of the direction of the force being exerted on the knot. My suggestion would be a fisherman's knot (aka true lovers knot). It is still simple but is designed to handle the force better. Wrapped with tape it would look very professional.
I'm going to have to look into this a bit more. I desperatly want a TRX suspension system for stronger core workouts and to change it up...but it's SO damn over priced. Time to do some research into this since I want to bring these straps to my gym.
You really helped me save some bucks man. I do have a question for you.
Would the straps be able to withstand the weight of my body by using them as gymnastics rings. I mean, is it of importance to make the shorter strap for attaching them to something or could i attach them to a pull up bar as singles?
Phenomenal! So easy even the mechanically challenged like myself can make these! And thanks for linking the bowline know video .. I need all the help I can get.
Hey Stevo, great video very easily followed. Im having 1 problem, i cant find lashing straps anywhere. I have been to all the big hardware stores and no one carrys the ones you show they all have hooks on them, or they are to short. I tried looking on amazon like you said, do i need 2 inch or 1 inch straps?? i cant find the 2 inch ones..thanx for the help, look forward to making this myself.
I just went out and had a look at how much all of this is going to cost and i think im go and buy the stuff tomorrow and throw it together, hopefully it works out
Stevo, awesome video. Suspension handles/kits are waaaay overpriced for what they are (a rope with some handles), you'll have saved this very poor student a lot of money.
You'll need to experiment (depends on the size of your shoe) but if you make a slot with a 5-6" diameter that should work pretty well. Ross Enamait put together a suspension tutorial using my video (you can check out his site to see it) and I actually like the way he did the foot straps better. He bought 10-12ft. straps and then cut the ends to use for the foot straps. I like the feel of those better than rope for the feet.
great vid man! many thanks 4U 2 save me 60.000Forints, (it's about 300$, people in my country earn 300$ in a week!!, in Hungary the original is so expensive) thank YOU! r
With the straps he's chosen from Home Depot, this diy project WILL NOT WORK. The clamps are not strongh enough,no matter what kind of straps, rope, and signage he's chosen.
@bosszeroboss Straps work great. I have used same exact lashing straps from HD that Steve used. After 13 months of 3 suspension strap workouts per week- I do two of them where straps are attached to a large oak tree and the other is attached to goal post... (40 min per wkot) straps have held up perfectly. Unless a person is above 235lbs ....this same exact setup will work flawlessly
@bosszeroboss-Sorry, cant explain why your system doesnt hold up and mine works flawlessly- You must have a design flaw in your system then. I am 180lbs and my son is 210lb...both of us use our homeade straps religiously. I also travel twice a week and take them with with me. While away I hook to a goal post at a middle school that is close to the hotel I stay.
I guess we will agree to disagree:)
Let me know and I can walk you thru the process of setting up your system.
Have you tried inserting the strap through the opposite end of the clamp? When I first set this up the loop would get bigger with minimal tension, very dangerous. I realized that I inserted the strap through the wrong end. It works perfectly now.
I CHECKED HOME DEPOT FOR THE YELLOW LASHING STRAPS AND COULDNT FIND THE KIND USED IN THE VID.ALL I FOUND WERE THE RATCHET TIEDOWN KIND WITH THE S-HOOKS.
When picking out a lashing strap, be sure to check what kind of webbing you get because some straps can have a breaking strength of 2,500 lbs, but have poor abrasion resistance and tear easily (bad for mounting on trees). Also, don't use static rock climbing ropes because they don't bend easily. Other than that, anyone who follows this will have a great product in the end!
Thanks, looking at the TRX suspension trainer for the first time and thinking about getting one, I was thinking it'd be around $30 or so, then saw it selling for $150+ on ebay which is like a joke. I can imagine it being shrink wrapped and sold for $9.99 at big lots or kmart, no way in hell should it cost more than $30 for the materials.
Hey, welldone video! very easily and clearly explained. One thing, have u ever used the TRX? and does this homemade version do everything the TRX does? As smoothly?
@arghmetis Thanks for the compliment! Yes, I have used the TRX, and this homemade version does do everything the TRX does (just as smoothly too, assuming you line everything up correctly). I was actually surprised at how well this homemade version allowed me to execute any movement I would do on the TRX (and some of the exercises I even liked better on the homemade model!).
I built my own for $45.00. I use 2 tiedowns and 2 velcro straps from Harbor Freight and 2 D handles for cable machines from The Sports Authority. I have a pullup bar in my garage that I attach the straps too. I even use Chip bag Clips to hold the excess straps!
One thing I"m gonna try. W/ the money I saved from not buying a TRX, I'm going to use a rock climbing daisy chain and carabiner to duplicate the top anchor point of the TRX system. It will add approx $30, but be a nice, flexible and strong option. I don't like having an 8' cam buckle lashing strap for the anchor point.
@Psalms4Christ AWESOME straps can be bought at NRSweb.com. I just got some 1.5" straps and the quality is great. Very nice buckle too. Check them out!
This is by FAR the best homemade suspension trainer. 1) no heavy metal hooks in the way or as a point of failure 2) no extra strap hanging down needing to be velcroed out of the way 3) no TRX type "sawing" or need to go to "single handle mode". I really like this design and will make it soon.
ps; They cost about $10 each and 20lbs long... What's good they can be used to attach anything, not just strap handles, but also rings and trapeze and i know I can drop a few feel on those okay.

Don't recommend using just body weight strength rating straps.... Use anything at least 5000 kNewtowons--what's around minimum rating for rock climbing stuff. Cause if you swing on it, it puts much more stress on roping. I'm gonna use tow straps rated 18,000 lbs (around 70 kilonewtons), they have carabiner type metal hooks attached on ends.
U R awesome! My gym is trying to make me pay a trainer to use this there at Golds... so forget that ... they also will not get me next yr contract for that. But you rock

@StevoReed Anyone figure out how to make the door anchor? Thanks for the vid. I just built mine.
racsop70 1 year ago
@racsop70 You can take another 4-5" piece of PVC pipe, slide the top strap through the pvc, put it on the other side of the door, and then attach it as usual. It will hold just fine that way.
StevoReed 1 year ago
@StevoReed is this 4-5" diameter or length?

Awesome video! I am just starting out as a mobile trainer and boot camp instructor and am on a budget for equipment. Your video literally saved me so much money. We got everything from Home Depot for $24. Got black straps, black pvc, and black rope. Also tucked the foot rope knot into the pvc so the entire thing looks completely professional. I cannot thank you enough for posting this video!

does it matter if we use a carabiner with a lock vs one without?

@whsbmx no, it shouldn't matter (but I still prefer to use one with a lock)

hi stevo. i saw this on ross enamait's blog. i wondered if you could please tell me the exact make of lashing straps you use? i live in the U.K so I'd have to order them online. Only I have had trouble finding some that I think are sturdy enough. Thanks!
junglephonik 1 year ago
@junglephonik I actually found straps that I like way better than the ones used in the video. Go to REI's website and order the 12ft heavy duty utility straps (you can cut them to make foot straps or to fit the height of the anchor point). Hope this helps.
StevoReed 1 year ago

I mean, is it of importance to make the shorter strap for attaching them to something or could i attach them to a pull up bar as singles?
chubbeynr1 1 year ago
Stevo,
Phenomenal! So easy even the mechanically challenged like myself can make these! And thanks for linking the bowline know video .. I need all the help I can get.
Any ideas on how to make a door anchor?

Hey Stevo, great video very easily followed. Im having 1 problem, i cant find lashing straps anywhere. I have been to all the big hardware stores and no one carrys the ones you show they all have hooks on them, or they are to short. I tried looking on amazon like you said, do i need 2 inch or 1 inch straps?? i cant find the 2 inch ones..thanx for the help, look forward to making this myself.

Stevo, awesome video. Suspension handles/kits are waaaay overpriced for what they are (a rope with some handles), you'll have saved this very poor student a lot of money.
How long should the rope for the feet be?
JasonJarred 1 year ago
@JasonJarred as long as you can get your feet through them, it's about the right size...
Hrairoo53 1 year ago
@JasonJarred

@StevoReed Thanks Stevo, I've made the system like in your video, and it works beautifully!

TRX is about US$120 overpriced. That persons pay US$145 for TRX shows how desperate they are to change their bodies.
I've made my own suspension system that works better than lashing straps. I use boat rope with a rapid-change loop adjustment system.

With the straps he's chosen from Home Depot, this diy project WILL NOT WORK. The clamps are not strongh enough,no matter what kind of straps, rope, and signage he's chosen.
bosszeroboss 1 year ago
@bosszeroboss Straps work great. I have used same exact lashing straps from HD that Steve used. After 13 months of 3 suspension strap workouts per week- I do two of them where straps are attached to a large oak tree and the other is attached to goal post... (40 min per wkot) straps have held up perfectly. Unless a person is above 235lbs ....this same exact setup will work flawlessly
manueatscack 1 year ago
@manueatscack
No, these straps will not work.
And I am 155 lbs.
I went through a lot of time and trouble to find these same straps, the proper carabiner, and have the pvc pipe cut to five inches.
In retrospect, I would have been better off paying the extra $75-$100 for the Lifeline Jungle Gym or the TRX.
At least these two systems, though overpriced, would have worked.
bosszeroboss 1 year ago
@bosszeroboss-Sorry, cant explain why your system doesnt hold up and mine works flawlessly- You must have a design flaw in your system then. I am 180lbs and my son is 210lb...both of us use our homeade straps religiously. I also travel twice a week and take them with with me. While away I hook to a goal post at a middle school that is close to the hotel I stay.
I guess we will agree to disagree:)
Let me know and I can walk you thru the process of setting up your system.
manueatscack 1 year ago
@bosszeroboss
Have you tried inserting the strap through the opposite end of the clamp? When I first set this up the loop would get bigger with minimal tension, very dangerous. I realized that I inserted the strap through the wrong end. It works perfectly now.

NoKnockaKnee 1 year ago

As smoothly?
arghmetis 1 year ago

Psalms4Christ 1 year ago
@Psalms4Christ AWESOME straps can be bought at NRSweb.com. I just got some 1.5" straps and the quality is great. Very nice buckle too. Check them out!
Psalms4Christ 1 year ago
This is by FAR the best homemade suspension trainer. 1) no heavy metal hooks in the way or as a point of failure 2) no extra strap hanging down needing to be velcroed out of the way 3) no TRX type "sawing" or need to go to "single handle mode". I really like this design and will make it soon.

Thanks for the advice Stevo. I made my own suspension trainer based on this video for less than $24.
