  • in this new configuration with the makeshift plug in the breech, can you now legally use this during muzzle loader season in Florida?

  • I learn from all your videos. Some are better than others and some have more info than others. This video is a true modern day survival tutorial of the highest quality, something EVERYONE should know and a real inspiration. Thank you again for all you do. Kudos and good luck in all your endeavors.

  • i grew up with a shotgun just like that...old faithful.

  • I see a major problem here -- you're going to ram a powder load on top of a primed breech; that's like loading a traditional muzzle loader with a cap on the nipple. Other than that, this looks like a nice idea. Also, the shot load is the same *volume*, not the same *weight* as the powder.

  • @SilntObsvr I was going to say the same thing regarding the powder/shot weight. 100 grains of shot like that is probably no more than a half-dozen of those pellets. I would be VERY careful ramming steel shot down a steel barrel (possibility of a spark) with a powder charge already in there. I would stick with lead. It think this entire idea is a great one though.

  • This is really cool. I used to sell these guns for a living, if I would have known some of this I could have sold more. I think I am going to go and get one now. Thank you for the excellent information. I really enjoy all of the videos. God Bless

  • is there anywhere in the eastern usa that you can actually live hunt and be alone and live a true woodsmans life im looking hard and cant find anywhere were you would not need a hunting license mortgage etc. HELP!

  • @themann795 if need to u can kill animals dude it not like some one is going to look for u and u should be 100 miles away from humuns anyway so i dont have a license when i go up north i hunt i maine i live back and forth but when i hunt with my bro i hav a license

  • really nice vid and what type of snake bit u

  • I use a .410 in this same method, just diff shot and powder weights. My son is younger and cannot carry and shoot a typical single shot 12ga. We have taken everything from small birds, upland birds, rabbit, squirrel and even two Turkeys so far with the .410 in blackpowder.

    A couple of notes here:

    1. Never shoot .45 long Colt through a .410 unless it is made for it. The makers first design for .45lc and then continue the design for .410.

    2. DO NOT use pyrodex pellets!

  • Very interesting video...

  • Superb video Dave. I just want to say how much I enjoy your videos and all that you have to offer us out here who love God and life as we were meant to live it while we're here. You truly are a gift to us all. What a great teacher you are. You certainly did not miss your 'calling'. Well done!

  • I guess I'm missing the point unless it's just for the gratification of shooting a black powder weapon, it's much less expensive and a lot easier to just use 12 gauge shot shells to begin with.

  • you know you can buy lead bbs right? pyramidair (dot) com

  • dave used to have a video on using the 410 in a similar manner, i assume he had to remove the more dangerous gun videos before discovery channel would take him on. arrows shoot fine out of a 410. double barrel shotguns are much more expensive and you have to worry about the first shot knocking the second barrel's load loose. the 410 is small and useful but the twelve gauge top break single shot can kill anything from doves to moose.

  • that gun looks identical to a New England Firearms, Pardener Model 12 ga 3" gun.

  • why don't you carry a double barrel?

  • Dave how many times do you think we could reuse the high brass before it would need to be discarded or resized, or is it good to go forever? Thanks for sharing what ya know. Much appreciation and respect for ya in our home

  • steel shot can shatter the barrel

  • That was a great video. and dido on alternative uses with a 410

Food For Thought; if you could use a .22 adapter in a 410 would you still want to carry the extra weight of a over under 410/.22 like the M6 scout?

  • Anyone know the intro song's name/artist?

  • Very interesting to know, but I'm kind of lost as to the practical usefulness of this. What are the chances you're going to be in a survival situation and happen to have both primer and black powder? Given, in some areas, with a little know-how you can make black powder. But what are the chances you'll actually be out in the woods and have spare primers instead of spare shells?

  • Great video, I have been talking to a couple guys about doing just this and I will refer them to this video. Thanks.

  • Dave, Could you load that with gun powder and for the ammo use a small spear for hunting or anything

  • Dave, great video. I've been thinking about purchasing a shotgun. Seeing your video, I might go with this H&R. I notice it comes in both 28" and 32" barrel lengths. Could you comment on the advantages/disadvantages of each barrel length?

  • @Westreekid go with caliber, 41 grains for .41 caliber, but 40 grains isn't much of a loss.

  • Comment removed

  • Could you not improve the reload by using the existing shell case completely with primer, pyrodex and shot?

That way you can have several reloaded shells, ready to go in the breech instead of muzzle loading it?

I know you are showing the muzzle loading side but is doing it with a complete shell possible also (via breech loading...?

  • @WatchRyder yes, he shows that in newer videos. he even did that with .410 shells a couple years ago on this channel.

  • Dave, Dont know if this is a good idea or not but instead of having to carry a dowel rod. could you use a piece of a collapsible tent pole as a ramrod, that way it folds up and makes it easier to carry with you?

  • @bprater5 good idea

  • also, have you ever considered making paper cartridges for this set up? just like a old time musket. you could mark them as shot or ball loads. the nice thing about it is that the paper acts as the patches, everything's in a nice package and fast to load. in your case, just pop the primer shell in, rip the paper cartridge, pour the powder into the barrel, send the paper and load down the barrel and set it with the ram rod. fast and simple.

  • for anyone wondering how they can make a primer punch or a stand(what the magnet it being used for), but can't get the magnet or the pliers. all you need is a deck nail and some washers to replace them in this kit. to set the primer, all you need is a small piece of pipe to replace the lansky hone. you could even leave the shell as a whole in this case since the cut down is to allow the pliers to be used. just some good info :D

  • @flamedrag18 no s@@t! thanx bro!-

    Greg

  • Very good video and cleaning the weapon after using it is the key and you went over that very well.

  • Good idea, but it's a blackpowder gun, not a muzzle loader, a muzzle loader rifle or gun, is a fire arm that loads down the barrel, the shotgun, is a breach loader, but loading modern shot shells with pirodex or triple 7 is a good idea, they are clean powders.

  • Dave, couldn't the same priciples be used on the .410 cartridge, adding a couple more options? Such as the ability to shoot the 45 long Colt through it, as well as shoot arrows out of it in a pinch?

  • @Sktrtrsh yes, you can do this with any shotgun shell. as for the .45 colt, he already has a .410/.45 colt adapter.

  • @Sktrtrsh 45 LC is going to wear your .410 barrel out quite quickly....

  • @Sktrtrsh I think the primary thing here was that he could pop the old primer out with his multi-tool. That isn't going to happen with a 410. If you've made provision for doing that, then there is no reason to even cut the shell down.

Well, that and .410 is a retarded survival round.

  • The Kentucky Long Rifle was a hybrid of 2 earlier frontier guns. One was the German rifle, which had a rifled barrel but was much shorter, heavier, and had a larger caliber than the Kentucky. The other gun was the English fowling piece, which was smoothbore, but had a longer barrel and smaller caliber than a regular musket to improve accuracy. The fowling piece could fire a single round ball or multiple small shot. So, Dave's shotgun is much like a fowling piece in function.

  • Dave, don't you want to run your steel wool the other way thru the barrel, pull the crap away from the chamber instead of pulling the garbage into the chamber area? Great nugget of knowledge in this video, I will keep it for the years after after we cease to be a country. For now I think my Marlin Papoose and vacuum packed 22 ammo will have to do. Thank-you Dave for sharing your knowledge with us.

  • so would you be able to load a sabot or round ball

  • First I would like to say thanks for all the knowledge you share with us. I to would like to see more on the .410 I have an M6 scout and love to carry this gun in my pack due to it's size. I would guess the loads are just downsized a bit but still would love to see what you can do.

  • Multi-tasking; Watching Dual Survival AND this video at the same time!!! ( =

  • Thanks for another great video Dave! I always learn something when I watch your videos.

  • My horse, my equipment, and myself.

  • thanks Dave, super good information, great video,

  • Had no idea you could do that. Excellent vid. Please keep them coming.

  • this is an awesome video, this is my second time watching it today, very factual too

  • thanks for these videos, it's very hard to find this good of information anywhere else, especially thanks for your time, please keep it up!

  • hay dave whats your pack made of it looks kind of cool

  • Another great video Dave! Thanks for showing us another way to use the shot gun just in case you can't find rounds for it but may come across some black powder. I love this series. It reminds me of when I used to load shell for my old man when I was a kid.

  • dave can you do the same whith a slug

  • dave found the magnets at radio shack. round cermaic magnets 1 1/8" round made from iron & metal oxides $3.19 5pack. tried them they worked for me. thanks

  • dave I have everything you are using except the magnet. is that part of a reloading kit. were can we buy one.

  • I think some mised the point of this demonstration. Plastic shotgun shells get damaged. If all you have is the good brass from damaged shells you can use this method to maintain an effective weapon, instead of a fancy club. The next video on reloading shotgun shells presents a more ideal situation, but anyone over 20 years-old should have learned by now there are no ideal situations in life.

  • great video Dave.

  • Dave you should check out the Rossi no tools to dissemble

  • H&R needs to give you commission. You just sold a shotgun sir!

  • could you use a leaf instead of cloth

  • well, its better to have shot that is too big than too small :)

Ya gotta love those H&R single shots! I have a 20 GA. one it was my dad's first and it was my first gun too and it still shoots today.

  • @a2redneck yep! I bought mine for 75 buck's, back in 1990, unfortunately, like a dumbass, traded it(as part of payment) for a p.o.s. 1986 chevy s-10:(. still miss yhat gun, to this day!!

  • @gregoir oh yeah, besides the family history i got behind my H&R, there is something about that tough simplicity of those single shot break opens that you just gotta love. BTW, do not buy single shot Rossi guns!

  • @a2redneck thank's bro! n if I can/do buy one it will be either a H&R 12 or another 20 gauge, GOD I miss that gun! like you say, the"tough simplicity"

    see ya bro!-

lol lemme know if ya see any cheap one's!-GOD bless ya!-

    Greg

  • @a2redneck whats wrong with the rossi singles i just bought a nice matched pair 22/20 ga and i love mine

  • @SirMidnightBravehear without going into details and paragraphs, the Rossi's are just of lower quality and as far as their rifles go, not to accurate as the other single shot makers out there. One thing the really turned me down from them, was the safety. You DO NOT put a saftey on a single shot!! Especially one that has a hammer! It just complicates the gun, and now you have something that can go wrong. That hammer is the saftey. Its insulting to have a saftey on that gun.

  • @a2redneck no offense but your an idiot

  • @CountryBoy1571 Anyone who has declared someone else to be an idiot, a bad apple, is annoyed when it turns out in the end that he isn't.

  • @a2redneck whats wrong with rossi single shots? just curious

  • @futureusmc100 read the comment above^

  • @a2redneck Aren't Rossi guns made in Brazil?

  • @a2redneck In full support of our American Economy, I bought an H&R Pardner 12 Gauge

  • @TheEndzeitBegins574 pardner? the pump action H&R? those guys are chinese clones of the Remington 870s.

  • @a2redneck No, whatever the hell they call the single shots

  • @TheEndzeitBegins574 oh, yeah their single shots are Topper Model (insert model name or number here) they are all made in the good old US of A. I have a topper model 88

  • Hey Dave why not take the two canisters and tape them together back to back making it a little more compact, I think it would give you less to search through in your pouch. Awesome video.

  • Awesome. I will be doing this with the old 410. Question- why wont the ejector kick the shell out when you open the breach? Thanks for another great video!!

  • This is great!

A couple observations, the bbs look bigger than buck. Black powder can't blow a modern black powder barrel unless you clog it. You could fill it up & it just burns on the way out ... I've done it on 4th of July's, lol, would be nice to learn if that's true of a 12 gauge barrel.

I don't think a dry patch is reliable to hold the shot together. I think wrapping it like a bean bag in material so it gives a little friction when pushed in would be reliable & let it loose after shot.

  • @tblbaby I don't see why not use the whole shell again, to hold the shot. If you had wax or heavy lard to hold the shot in or recrimp the plastic? Guess you could heat it & reform it if nothing else worked.

Your video is excellent. You can make your own powder in a pinch if you can find the elements & that's a new chance to use a fire arm if there is no smokeless around.

Good thinking going into cleaning, because black powder will absolutely ruin the gun if you don't get on cleaning it after.

  • This was very educational. Thank you.

  • If it comes down to it, you can use the magnet as a weight for a fishing line. That is, if it's worth taking the chance on losing it. Thanks for another great tip.

  • How many times do you fire before you have to clean the barrel?

  • @iguire It's not about times fired, it's about getting the corrosive residue from the burned black powder cleaned out before it starts corroding the barrel. You don't want to wait more than a couple hours if you can help it. The quicker the better. Of course if it gets dirty it never hurts to push a hunk of rag through it until you can get to a good source of water & soap or solvent better yet if possible. A wet rag or other patch material if you'll have time for it to dry out before you load

  • @tblbaby with pyrodex you can wait longer than 2 hours its not as corrosive as real black powder... but you dont want to leave it in there for too long

  • Great vid Dave! Could you do this with the .410 portion of the M6 Scout?

  • hey Dave-o i own a 20GA H&R single shot...just wondering if i can do the same with mine that you did with yours. Thanks Brother looking forward to hearing from you

  • This is why I am sold on the single shot 12 gauge. The ease of maintenance, versatility & it forces you to be a better shot. I learned how to shoot with a single shot .22 because my step dad didn't want me wasting a lot of ammo. Later this helped me when I was qualifying in the Marine Corp. The Corp helped me hone my skills even more. And I really liked how you cleaned the barrel. Great video.

  • where can i get 1 of those magnets?

  • can you do this with a 12 ga over and under

  • Love those H&R single shot 12ga shotguns. Nothing to jam or go bad on them.

  • the aiming bead at the front of the weapon wont affect your shoot of slugs? the reason i ask is i have a H&R 20GA but thought i couldn't shoot slugs because the front post does screw into the barrel just slightly...

  • Thanks for the videos!

  • Wow, that is a very good and interesting video! I think, a 12ga shotgun is the best weapon you can have in a survival situation. But, can you also shot a .69 or .72 roundball with this method?

sorry for my bad english, please. I come from germany, and my english is not very good, i know. I hope, you can understand me.

  • Everything detailed and explained perfectly, very well done.

  • great vid tons of info thanks dave

  • very interesting video dave. how often would you have to clean the gun? after every use? im not a hunter, but i am thinking i would eventually like to learn how to own and operate a gun, you know, for when the shit finally hits the fan. ill be using all the skills ive learned from you over the years.

  • Without access to modern gun oils how would you suggest to keep the barrel from rusting

  • @madogblue tallow or fat

  • Well the BIG DOG has done it again---thank you. Its great--please keep up the good work---We love ya brother.

  • Never thaught of this you do great vids thanks for tips continue to do what you do

  • Hey Dave. I was wondering which multi tool it is that you use in this video'

  • Probably a stupid question, but can I do this with a Mosin Nagant? :D

  • Great video and I have one question. I am looking at the rossi 22 lr 20 ga combo which is a single shot setup, the question is would the powder setup be about the same for a 20 ga instead of a 12 ga.

  • i know the point of this is to highlight how to use the gun for blackpowder, but , up to 40 or 50 meters there is no reason why you cant hunt small game, ducks rabbits, geese etc with an air rifle, the amount of shot you used to hit a rabbit target would have allowed you about 20 shots out of an air rifle,

just an idea for anyone who wants to take it on board

  • @spr00sem00se You are correct but that air rifle will only shoot BB's brother my 12 GA will shoot ANYTHING you shove down the barrel, that is point of these videos.

  • @wildernessoutfitters thats a good point, i heard you mention shooting rocks from the creek, isnt that a dangerous thing to do ? i guess if the rock could possibly get jammed in the barrel then its dangerous, assumedly you have to know what you are doing.

i liked the video btw, and its a good idea to know how to use blackpowder, either for fun or neccesity,

  • @spr00sem00se I wouldn't want to shoot a rock that could get stuck, cause yeah, blamo. I'd be leaning toward a plastic cup that fit the barrel for the rocks or a waxed or greased patch tied full of them, but if it's life or death sometimes you've gotta take a chance I guess or just give up and die. There's usually more than 1 rock around, so I'd stay away from the one you see that could possibly turn a little then wedge hard in the barrel if it was me

I hope I'm not talking too much on this

  • @wildernessoutfitters With all due respect Dave, air rifles will no just shoot BB's.. A well made air rifle will do and has done quite well for me when using pellets instead of BB's, and are quite accurate in some cases out to 75 and 100 yds.. Now, myself I feel pretty confident in my air rifle(RWS 48) out to 50 yds, with a good rest..

Not knocking shotguns or anything... Just shedding some light on the subject..

  • not sure how much hunting you have done with air rifles moose but I only put pellets down mine if I am aiming at an animal. I do not trust BB's to hit where I am aiming for a clean kill.

  • @wildernessoutfitters This is a great re-purposing : ) I'd love to understand what kind of pressures shot gun barrels could stand. If you can shoot a slug out of them you'd think there isn't any amount of black powder that could blow it up unless a BIG projectile, or something was jammed in the barrel. Of course those old Damascus barrels used to unravel sometimes, lol. & if you get mud plugged in the end it tends to make a flower thing out of the barrel or even blow it up closer to the breach.

  • @wildernessoutfitters He does have point, cool vid though very useful for suvival situation, dave you should do some vids on air guns, bb guns have come along way ,like the sam yang big boar .45 cal air rifle, shoots .45 at 700 fps and break barrel air rifle are perfect for long term survival because you dont need any supplies for it like black powder or co2 ,or pumps and you could get enough ammo for it,, to last years for like 10 dollars.great video keep um coming,

  • @spr00sem00se Also watch video 1 where Dave is talking about WHY he is not using modern stuff in this series.

  • @iamthethinkingman an air rifle isnt really a modern invention.

  • does this damage the gun in any way? and it be done with other calibers such as 410's and 20gs?

  • Dave, thanks for this! I never thought of this before. SO versatile!

  • we do the same with a 12ga coach gun.love it

  • Thanks for the idea dave!

  • you can make gunpowder yourself, but also primers?

  • Hi Dave, what did u use to lube the gun in the last of this clip. is that grease? thank brother.

  • @panpichit It was Tallow - check out his recent videos on turning deer butt fat into Tallow as a multipurpose "grease"

  • Great tip Dave. Dont we just got to love simple things.

    Take care: Ari

  • Could you use natural material instead of cotton patches? Any ideas? Great vid, Dave! Love to see how this pathfinder system has developed into something you can do full time, and it's so easy to see how much you are enjoying it! Cheers from Norway!

  • Dave I've been a watcher since you did the squirrel hunt with a woods made slingshot years ago, and i must also admit i quit watching a year or so ago due to you leaving the longhunter / versa shelter style behind but now your back in the old style and i'm watching again. Thank you Dave. I like the expanded coverage you've done with the black powder conversion on your 12 gauge, I think it explains alot more that was missed in the .410 episode you did with your son.

  • i have a single shot 20 ga what loat would you recomend for it to do this

  • What kind of sharpener is that? Great vid.

  • Why is a 12 gauge better than a .22lr? You are not going to be able to resupply the primers and .22lr are not much bigger to carry. I'd rather have my .22lr rifle with good sights and great accuracy. You had to use a bunch of pellets/balls to get one rabbit, with a .22lr it would have only been one bullet as far as carrying lead ammo.

  • I absolutely love this series. I have had a N.E. arms 20ga collecting dust in the house for years. This gives me a reason to get it out again.

  • how many shots before you have to clean the barrel?

  • Dave, I love this series!! Keep up the great work. God bless. John

  • how much kick does it have? less than a modern day shot gun not bpowder?

  • obviously with that kind of effort per shot, you wouldnt be wasting it on a rabit. but nice demonstration

  • i think some of you guys missed the idea behind this video the reason he didnt just reload the shell is to show that if you had to you can load it like a muzzle loader obviously if you were planning on reloading in the field you can just take modern shotgun powder and reload the shells but when the modern powder runs out and the shells get so worn that you cant load them anymore and you come across some black powder you know you can use it

  • @roadhog1986 or even make it

  • all these people that spend a thousand dollars on an ar are going to be in real trouble when they run out of lube. i seriously doubt and ar would run very well with rendered fat for lube.

  • Have you seen the full length 12 gage black powder cases that are made of all brass?

do you think it will fit in a newer 12 gage like this? Cool video keep them coming

  • U can do this or spend less on a pump action 12 gauge

  • @lolworld2012 Which has alot of moving parts to fail in a longer term wilderness situation! That is the point not do it everyday but you can if you need to.

  • @wildernessoutfitters

Thanks for the vid brother, you inspired me to pick up a HR single shot 12 ga at the local pawn shop. Looking forward to trying this this weekend.

  • @lolworld2012 Dude you can't take down a deer or a hog with an air rifle. Good vid Dave. Keep em coming.

  • @lolworld2012 every gun shop i've walked into you can pick up a single shot for cheaper then a pump, sometimes even find a side by side for cheaper then a pump.

  • Nice job Dave! Very informational! Can you shoot regular slugs from that gun too?

  • my only worry is your using STEEL shot with out a wad that protects the barrel i wonder if the barrel is scratched

  • @tacticalfumble Thats one of the benefits of using a patch, it protects the barrel.

  • Nicely done.

  • I'm with Kellett... why not just load up your empties?

  • Dave for years I have used mink oil from a can on my boots. Thats the same consistancy as tallon? I can use it on my shot gun?

  • Dave, I love ya man but from a black powder and shot gun shooter, I am afraid I can not agree with the methodology of this video. Why not just knock out the primer WITHOUT cutting the plastic case, and reload the shell like you pressented as a prepared all in one piece? If you are going to carry, powder, primer, and shot, you might as well go all the way. I can put 3 rounds in 1 minute through my 1853 3 band enfield, loads prepared in paper. Prepping shotgun rounds is just as easy.

  • @Kellett781 You are correct brother , this was not about this is the only way it was about one way, I reload cartidges in the next vid.

  • @wildernessoutfitters Just watched the next vid where you reload the shell and I must say i loved it, AND that I am looken at a single shot 12 gauge in a different light. I understood that in this vid however you were trying to show how versatile the rifle could be, in that it COULD be loaded this way. However, I was just saying I didnt see the point... unless of course the shell split and all you had left was the brass. Which is what would happen in a real long term scenario of survival.

  • @wildernessoutfitters Which leads me to a vid suggestion along the lines of methods to fire this fine piece of yours! Make up a batch of prepared Paper cartriges, loaded the same way a black powder gun would be loaded. Your haversack carrying the charge and prepaired primers. And another shot demonstraiting use of a powder horn and shot horn. And might I suggest shying away from Pyrodex? If you were to compliment your gear with a black powder revolver, you wouldnt want to use Pyrodex.

  • Dave, of course is an expert at improvising this stuff.........If you are inexpierianced with a muzzleloader Do not try this it is very dangerous. It will blow your hands or your face right off. with todays modern muzzleloaders it is much easier that this way or using the old style percussion cap or flintlock rifles/ pistols. It takes tons of practice to get this good.

  • good

  • Love the 12GA!! I've been hunting with my singel barrel since I was 13, and I still love it!

Thanks for the attention youre giving this beautiful weapon!

  • I think I saw Dave use that gun on an episode of Dual Survival.

  • Another excellent video, Dave!!! I too remember the .410/45 LC video, and would greatly appreciate a reposting of that video as well. Thank you for all that you do for this community and for posting such excellent videos!!!

  • are the components of black powder readily or semi readily available in nature?

  • Very ingenious!! Thanks Dave.

  • Very informative video!, is that a H&R pardner?

  • I remember way back you had a .410 video out . You should re post it Dave!

  • Wow,i never realized all the things you can do with these single barrel shotguns. Very cool.

  • A 1 1/2 oz fishing sinker works as a pretty good slug

  • think it was 30 secons was average in the 1800s to load a musket in the army

  • where can you get film canisters at? I've tried wal-mart, but they don't do "film" anymore at the one I go to.
