Yes, I was impressed. Hula is evolving and crossing some boundries. Mark is awesome with his chanting and beats of the ipu heke. Danced with halaus back in the 70's,80's and 90's. We were doing out the ordinary stuff back then and we were looked down upon by many elders. I glad Mark has helped open the doors to more innovative styles of expressing the Hawaiian Hula in movement and sound. May perservere in your actions so we can continue to enjoy your choreography and your artiistry.
you think this is good.....Its going down in the bay on October 2nd, the men of the Academy of Hawaiian Arts are battling center stage with 4 other halau at kahulahou, an all kane competition!(San Mateo,Ca) i cant wait! you should check it out at the kahulahou website. dont forget to check out the forum to sees whos talking smack!
Oh my, See I have a hawaiian boe just like diz back home!! and I am so glad he has evolved than when I first meet him, other wise who knows what he would be wearing in our weeding!! haha same as me! ALOHA to all my island boys ain't no man like you in da world!!
this was very entertaining. the footwork though seems to be less emphasized as compared to the movement of hands. I feel that the hand motions may evolve, but not the feet. The traditional stances make it stronger since hula has the dualistic nature to the bone-breaking martial art lua (hula and lua have the same feet movements such as 'aiha'a, ku'i, 'uwehe, etc). It also serves as an interpretation of the earth's movements, and is a primal connection to our akua.
anyone claiming this is controversial needs to stop being stubborn and get with the times. Change is inevitable. Hula of the past has evolved from way back. Evolution is normal.. hawaiians from the past who caught there own food and lived off the land have evolved, and now we all shop at ala moana and text on iphones!!
I love Kumu Ho'omalu...his voice just sends shiver down your spine...brings me at ease might i add...mahalo...lol on the ladies always yelling for the mens...love it.........
I wasnt speaking in regards only to this Hula..There was acomment about anake Kanahele's remarks to his teaching..Also, disgrace to out culture when he decided, to take two of our sacred oli from out ali'i combine them, patant it and call it his own..
Please elaborate, I would love to know what 'oli you are referring to. Is it so hard for you to accept the fact that some people, are in fact, creative? Please, go through the rest of his original compositions and tell me who he "stole" those from too, oh mighty hula master who apparently knows more than the rest of us.
the performace was a big suprise 4fans and also because we had notice that we were dancing at 4:30 the day b4 and we still kicked butt! lol there are also other resons to Kumu coughing remember he had the ciggertte b4 he sang maybe that caused the coughing still sounded great
I dont know about the words so i cant comment on that. but the choreography was nice. i would like that chicken dance part explained. what was that all about. i just want to know what brought that on, not saying that its wrong, just want to know what it was. the guys were pretty tasty lookin too! ;o) i love me some hawaiian boys!
The "chicken" motion verse is talking about a young man that is being boastful. He thinks that he can beat anyone, including Pele, on a sled, and in return for being so boastful Pele turns him into a rooster. =]
Ok...well the dance was still cool in my opinion!! very heart felt and to me thats what makes the difference in hula! hope to see you guys' video clips again here soon.
Hawaiian. I appreciate the things you all do to try and perpetuate our culture...but no offense your doing it all wrong..Your kumu Hula, maybe a good kumu hula to some, a good chanter, but that is those to who ignorant. words are tarnished and chanted with a completely different meaning then it original..
Please explain what you mean by tarnished. I always thought that part of culture was the changes it goes through. As long as Kumu Mark honors the culture by the spirit and love of the hula...How is it wrong? Was it wrong to move from Kahiko to Auana? Now we accept Auana with the western instruments as part of the hula culture, but it was not always so.
FAMANUUUU...BRA... SERIOUSLY GET A LIFE. if you dont like us thats fine, we are both loved and hated so we get our point across either way so do everyone a favor and close that mouth of yours! haha and as for all the supporters much love and thanks!
I am not Hawaiian, but lived there long time. I know the pride and honor is very important to a halau. I think you guys were EXCELLENT. I like the twist that you guys do....and the chants are HOT!!!! WELL DONE!!!!!I hope to see you guys sometime live in person. Keep it up...and take care....Aloha
misskanitha be a real hawaiian then u would kno wassupp okay u wannabe......so get that thru ur big halau head okay cause ya'll aint shit ....iv'e seen better
You can insult me if it makes you feel better, I don't mind. You're definately entitled to your own opinion, as am I... matter of factly I happen to think we're great. =] Why can't we just keep it positive and be happy that people are promoting culture, instead of being so critical of them?
and turn it into a boring thing no one wants to watch. c'mon hula has evovled since day one of its creations I am sure if you took what is considered "traditional hula" today and danced it back during hulas creation they would say the same thing your saying. Traditions and culture evovle much like people do. THe only thing constant in life is change, so stop hating and just enjoy
Kumu Mark is one of a kine! Hawaiian soul, he has! I love everything about Kumu Mark! his chanting and teachings!

It was great seeing his halau and Mark close out the Aloha Festival Sunday, but his coughing all throughout made me worry for his health.
