Why GOOGLE isn't doing it's job - Google claimed my site had affiliates to online gambling and they penalized it. Here's the problem..we are a graphic design studio and we had example images of the 3d graphics done for Top Slots, a valueware slots PC game, and they thought it was for online gambling. They didn't take the extra 2 seconds to actually look at what it was. 99.9% of visitors would never think it was for some online gambling thing.
sure they gotta tell you, at least, why your site is penalized ,
as you get an evil, bad minded rival, he gets whatever opportunity to get your site penalized, and you might spend more than 2 month on reconsideration requests until they'll drop it off, never knowing the reason of it
Thanks for the video Matt. It's comforting to know there are people behind the big Google machine, who are willing to manually look at penalty situations and act. I echo some other concerns here about the frustrations of not knowing the exact cause for a penalty. My site for example has been under whats known in the webmaster world as a "google 950" penalty for a week and I have no idea why yet. But I plan on exhaustively poring over every line of html and triple checking the guidelines.
The BIG problem with this system is when the webmaster has NO idea why their site is being penalised (Same goes for Adwords), and a request for details as to what EXACTLY is the problem with the site (So they can mend it) always results in Google Support repeatedly sending the same link to the Google guidelines page, and the poor webmaster is still none the wiser. Being banned for life with no idea what you're doing wrong is NOT a great user experience.
The answer straight from the Google apologist himself, of course, keep that in mind when you consider the accuracy of the response...even if it is "Official"
Is the "penalty action" ever going to become publicly viewable? I have seen quite a few site owners busy scrambling in the webmaster forum trying to highlight what caused the penalty. Seems like that could help many of them out as it's not always their fault.
I pretty confused about a think, where did the users post those question? On the google webmaster forum, or? I'm pretty curious about this, please PM me if someone have a link, thanks in advence.
@pricop2007 I think it was on the webmaster forum, but follow them on Twitter and they'll tweet a link out when they're going to record new videos (only a few times a year).
Well it would be dumb if Google terminated sites forever because lets say there is a website I'm interested in and the owner does a bunch of evil blackhat stuff and gets the site de-indexed from the big G, then I come along and buy the domain not knowing about the effects the previous owner brought on the site, after I fix it up, change it around and start doing things correctly (so to speak) it would be fair to say the site should get re-indexed. (Eventually Emphasis on Eventually)
i have a website that pops to the first page for few days, sometimes a week or two and then disappears.. I had this happen to one of my other site and found what I was doing wrong, but for this one, i don't see anything that would cause this.. is there a check list or something I can check against?
thanks for explaining this matt, id always thought it was the cats who decided when and for how long a site was penalized but youve clarified it nicely ... cheers
Ok, but how do you know if it is an algo penalty or a manual panelty? Wait, wait and wait an observe how nothing happened? If you penelize a site you should send a notice...
Especcially if you are in a "safeSearch Filter" in Google image-search you didn't know anything :-(
@tagSeoBlog the algo penalty makes you lose ranking for the keywords/search phrases you're targeting, but you're still in their index. A manual penalty is a cock-slap from Google and removal of your site from their index entirely which is impossible to get back
Thanks Matt. keep all the interesting videos coming! I've learnt a lot from them especially how important it is to create interesting content for people and not targeting google. I can't get enough of these videos :)
I'm sorry but I think Matt isn't truthful here. I had a hack on my site January 2010 which I subsequently fixed after noticing my site disappear off of Google's index. I've since then pushed through a reconsideration request 3 times (every 3-4 months) and my site hasn't been accepted back into the index even though the reconsideration request was complete and my site reviewed. I've changed from Wordpress to custom code and even changed hosting. Nothing. So whatever Matt said here is a lie
@NoirNG lol, I know the whole "It wasn't me!" thing, but I can actually prove I was hacked. Having gone through 4 manual reviews for reconsideration you'd think the Google team, after all the effort I put in, would have done their job huh?

You should list all the offending sites in a searchable penalty box. Like Google jail.
