  • Mandelbrot is the Bruce Li of math

  • Love this song :D

  • 7/10 for effort

    2/10 for achievement.

  • Comment removed

  • I made an GeoGebra file about the Mandelbrot iteration.

  • ho my god .________.

  • This inspired me to be better at math, thanks Jonathan Coulton your better than 90% of mainstream musicians.

  • @HMEngaged Next, listen to Tom Lehrer and improve your grammar so you can tell the difference between your and you're :)

  • WTF IS THIS?

  • the Mandelbrot set is awesome!! ... but I also happen to think that the Sierpinski gasket is brilliant

  • @theyellowdart31 who doesnt love unlimited triforces

  • This is pure win.

Johnathan Coulter deserves cookies for this.

  • @SuperRandomLAN LOTS of them. Infact, the rest of the human race should give him all their cookies.

  • A bulbous pointy form. A penis?

  • The only man that could put swearing in a song about maths and make it work

  • the song is the best¡¡

  • haahah awsome video and commend at the end!!hahaha

  • The riff kinda reminds me of Cherub Rock by Smashing Pumpkins, but this song is better.

  • @vaguelyhumanoid i hear it too :o

  • Beautiful video!!

    And the song ROCKS!!

Could you add the lyrics on the comment?

    I

  • +1

  • why is the equation not quite right? and if it is in the complex plane some of those zs can have i in them?

  • Awesome vid, JoCo rocks!

  • @AndromedaChao2

You really need to grow the fuck up, then.

  • This song would have sounded much better if it hadn't those offensive swearwords in its lyrics

  • @AndromedaChao2 How old are you?

  • @viccymiccyjo I'm 21

  • @AndromedaChao2 Those swearwords aren't offensive, they're used to compliment the Fractal. Moron.

  • @AndromedaChao2 I love words. I thank you for hearing my words.

I want to tell you something about words that I think is important.

They're my work, they're my play, they're my passion.

Words are all we have, really. We have thoughts but thoughts are fluid.

then we assign a word to a thought and we're stuck with that word for

that thought, so be careful with words. I like to think that the same

words that hurt can heal, it is a matter of how you pick them.

  • @AndromedaChao2 There are some people that are not into all the words.

There are some that would have you not use certain words.

There are 400,000 words in the English language and there are 7

of them you can't say on television. What a ratio that is.

399,993 to 7. They must really be bad. They'd have to be outrageous

to be seperated from a group that large.

  • @AndromedaChao2 All of you over here,you 7,

Bad Words. That's what they told us they were, remember?

"That's a bad word!" No bad words, bad thoughts, bad intentions,

    and words.

  • @AndromedaChao2 You know the 7, don't you, that you can't say on television?

"Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, CockSucker, MotherFucker, and Tits"

Those are the heavy seven. Those are the ones that'll infect your soul,

curve your spine, and keep the country from winning the war.

"Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, CockSucker, MotherFucker, and Tits"

    Wow

  • @AndromedaChao2 and Tits doesn't even belong on the list. That is such a friendly

sounding word. It sounds like a nickname, right? "Hey, Tits, come here,

man. Hey Tits, meet Toots. Toots, Tits. Tits, Toots." It sounds like a

snack, doesn't it? Yes, I know, it is a snack. I don't mean your sexist

snack. I mean New Nabisco Tits!, and new Cheese Tits, Corn Tits,

Pizza Tits, Sesame Tits, Onion Tits, Tater Tits. "Betcha Can't Eat Just

    One."

  • @AndromedaChao2 But I mean, that word does

not belong on the list. Actually none of the words belong on the list,

but you can understand why some of them are there. I'm not

completely insensetive to people's feelings. I can understand why

some of those words got on the list, like CockSucker and

    MotherFucker.

  • @AndromedaChao2 Those are heavyweight words. There is a lot going on

there. Besides the literal translation and the emotional feeling.

I mean, they're just busy words. There's a lot of syllables to contend

with. And those Ks, those are agressive sounds. They just jump out at

you like "coCKsuCKer, motherfuCKer. coCKsuCKer, motherfuCKer."

It's like an assualt on you.

  • @AndromedaChao2 We mentioned Shit earlier, and 2 of the

other 4-letter Anglo-Saxon words are Piss and Cunt, which go

together of course. A little accedental humor there. The reason that

Piss and Cunt are on the list is because a long time ago, there were

certain ladies that said "Those are the 2 I am not going to say. I

don't mind Fuck and Shit but 'P' and 'C' are out.", which led to such

stupid sentences as "Okay you fuckers, I'm going to tinckle now."

  • @AndromedaChao2 And, of course, the word Fuck. I don't really, well that's more

accedental humor, I don't wanna get into that now because I think

it takes to long. But I do mean that. I think the word Fuck is a very

imprortant word. It is the beginning of life, yet it is a word we use to

    hurt one another quite often

  • @AndromedaChao2 And, of course, the word Fuck. I don't really, well that's more

accedental humor, I don't wanna get into that now because I think

it takes to long. But I do mean that. I think the word Fuck is a very

imprortant word. It is the beginning of life, yet it is a word we use to

hurt one another quite often. People much wiser than I am said,

"I'd rather have my son watch a film with 2 people making love

than 2 people trying to kill one another.

  • @AndromedaChao2 I wish I knew who said it first. I agree with that but

I like to take it a step further. I'd like to substitute the word Fuck for

the word Kill in all of those movie cliches we grew up with. "Okay,

Sherrif, we're gonna Fuck you now, but we're gonna Fuck you slow."

So maybe next year I'll have a whole fuckin' ramp on that word.

I hope so. Those are the 7 you can never say on television, under any

    circumstanses.

  • @AndromedaChao2 Forget tHose 7. They're out.

But there are some 2-way words, those double-meaning words.

Remember the ones you giggled at in sixth grade? "...And the cock

CROWED 3 times" "Hey, tha cock CROWED 3 times. ha ha ha ha. Hey, it's in

the bible. ha ha ha ha. There are some 2-way words, like it is okay for

Kirk Youdi to say "Roberto Clametti has 2 balls on him.", but he can't

say "I think he hurt his balls on that play, Tony. Don't you?

  • @AndromedaChao2 He's holding

them. He must've hurt them, by God." and the other 2-way word that

goes with that one is Prik. It's okay if it happens to your finger. You

can prik your finger but don't finger your prik. No,no.

  • VERY FUNNY! COULTON IS A BADASS NERDY HARDROCKER, and he's allowed to be like that. And your video rocks!

  • I lol'd @ the end :P

  • i cried myself to death when i heard he was dead. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @NSMBking Then how are you posting on YouTube if you're dead?

  • I hate math!!! but i luv this video :P

  • RIP Mandelbrot. 10, 2010

  • what was said at the end? who said it? is there a video on youtube from which that came?

  • @leedude313 thats Jonathan Coulton, the guy who wrote this song

  • Is it just me, or does this sound just like They Might Be Giants?

  • @AAAAAAAAAA42 yeah my thoughts exactly. a lot of JoCo's stuff reminds me of them

  • @retroscorpionpie Well Flansburg (<-- misspelled) is producing his album so it should come as no surprise.

  • @AAAAAAAAAA42 he actually has a cover of little birdhouse in your soul that is amazing.

  • Love it :P

  • Everything about this is awesome. Hats off to the creators. Words fail me. I show this to everyone. Great job!

  • @drewismynick that applying to video, music, or both? i loved the song already, and this video was perfect for it imho.

  • @cyberpsygen7 yes.

  • The 3 smartest humans in history all advanced mathematics. Archimedes came up with many parts of algebra and geometry. Issac Newton invented Calculus (unless your a misguided fellow arguing for Leibniz). and Einstein found relativity. In fact, all building are based on calculus. All computers are just calculators. We may not perform higher math on a day to day basis, but we are all reaping the rewards of the applied use of the knowledge.

  • Fractality!

  • amazing video. :) And very educational.

  • My mind is blown.

Mathematics and cute... How can they mix like that...

  • This is just wonderful!!!

  • And you can tell they're mathmaticians because they've misspelt 'genius'.

    DAY-GLO PTERODACTYL!

    Love this song.

  • RIP Benoit Mandelbrat

  • trop fort <3 ;)

  • Made me smile :)

  • Very clever video!

  • @aljoshabre Yeah he just kinda invented a mathematical formula no one else had the brains to do. Not too important.

  • @crimsonspade308 . . . hahaha exactly. Envy is like the Julia set, it has no bounds.

  • @crimsonspade308

I wouldn't so much say no one else had the brains as no one else had the inspiration, or the creativity. It's similar to if not the same as art - the equation has no purpose or use, but it's brilliant nonetheless. Take the Mona Lisa for example; useless for anything but tourism, serves no purpose, but still infinitely famous and amazing. The mandelbrot set, though less famous, is the same. Unimportant genius.

  • @trafficlights1 It actually does have a use, I believe that they use his equation to tell the amount of miles (or Kilometers) of a coastline or other conventionally immeasurable object.

  • @trafficlights1 The Mona Lisa is a thing of beauty which enriches all our lives. I suppose maths does too for those who think a certain way.

  • @xummij The Mona Lisa is a painting of a woman. I wouldn't say I am Enriched by it, or that it has changed my life in the least. 0.o

  • seems like the Sirpinski set is easier than mandelbrot's is

  • R.I.P Mandelbrot, you're in heaven now.

I just started listening to this song the other day, and just about the time I memorized the equation I heard he had died, (with the adjustment from the Julia set,) now I can't meet him.

  • RIP Prof. Mandelbrot

  • "And now Mandelbrot's in heaven;

And it's a shame that he is dead,

And now there's someone new to fill his place at Yale"

  • I hardly listen to this song and last week is just popped into my head and was stuck there for a few days. I just learned that Mandelbrot died last week. *A*

  • A true bad ass f*cking fractal...R.I.P

  • this must be playin at Mandelbrot's funeral right now

  • No longer teaching math at Yale...

    Mandelbrot's in heaven!

  • I just like the tune; catchy pop!

  • RIP Mandelbrot

  • Now hes in heaven

  • Great animation. RIP Mandelbrot.

  • Farewell fractal dude.

  • RIP Mandelbrot

  • Great fun! Sad that Benoit Mandelbrot died last week - RIP.

  • RIP Mandelbrot

  • T_T

  • RIP

  • RIP Mandelbrot

  • RIP

  • RIP MANDELBROT :'(

  • @klattimer awesome. :D

  • And on a cold October day, a man named Benoît Mandelbrot passed away.

Mandelbrot's in heaven, at least he is now dead.

Right now he's left his life and is no longer teaching math at Yale.

    RIP.

  • Your ideas gave me inspiration to pursue mathematics! Thank you!

  • He's dead, Jim. ;-;

  • Rest in peace Mandlebrot. In fact, in little pieces that, when you zoom in, look the same as the bigger ones.

  • If it makes everyone feel better, his cancers died of cancers and so on.

  • R.I.P

  • RIP Mandelbrot

  • RIP Benoit Mandelbrot.

  • Rest in Peace Benoit

  • RIP Big B

  • The joke is that he'll be buried in a coffin in a coffin in a coffin...

  • sniff sniff, my "discovery" of fractals as a young teen pretty much cemented my nerd status to myself. Pancreatic cancer sucks.

  • Benoît Mandelbrot, may you rest in pieces, and pieces of those pieces, ad infinitum.

  • @alexchaffee he'd be proud

  • @alexchaffee Edward Lorenz is spinning in his grave; never flying out of it, but also never quite repeating the same path.

  • RIP

  • You spelled "genious" wrong in the credits.

  • RIP Benoit, have a good journey through the multiverse.

  • RIP Benoit Mandlebrot October 2010. One bad ass fucking fractal . Graet video

  • RIP Mandelbrot - math need not be intimidating

  • Rip mandlebrot

  • RIP Mandelbrot.

One of my first graphical programs i've ever written was to draw the mandelbrot set.

  • @Synapse626 One of your first programs was to draw the Mandelbrot set? That's hardcore. :3

When I got a visual calculator for the first time I just drew boobs all over the multiplication tables.

  • @andyofcomixinc yeap, though not one of my first "programs" but rather my first "graphical program".. I usually only write stuff for the command line.

I was fascinated by the mandelbrot set when i first heard of it. So was curious enough to try to draw it.

Found my old source code.. so compiled to share it. imgur dot com/vywcc.jpg

My Source Code if anyone is interested: pastebin dot com/Bvv0vvMz

Could probably get colors and stuff now.. but too busy to do it.

  • RIP Madelbrot.

  • RIP Mandelbrot!

  • Dr Mandelbrot. Gone to the great strange attractor in Z space.

  • Awesome.

  • RIP Dr Mandelbrot. The fractal world of Mother Nature bids you adieu.

  • He will surely be remembered

  • RIP, Benoit Mandelbrot...

  • rip

  • Oh man, the next line of the song; "Mandelbrot's in heaven. At least he will be when he's dead." I guess we gotta go rewrite the song... :'(

  • @andyofcomixinc I remember seeing the suggestion:

    "Mandelbrot's in heaven

    ...rest...

    ...rest...

He gave us order out of chaos..." (etc)

This only works, because lyrically speaking:

    a rest is to rhyme

    as zero is to addition

    and one is to multiplication

  • RIP Dr Mandelbrot. I'm sure you are in fractal heaven :)

  • 'night sweet prince

    rip

  • rip

  • RIP you bad ass fucking fractal <3

  • RIP Benoit!

  • Benoit, your set was one badass fucking fractal.

Good night sweet prince, may butterflies and dayglo pterodactyls carry your giant brain to infinite and beyond.

  • One Badass Fucking Fractal!

  • Mandelbrot Set you're a Rorschach Test on fire

    You're a day-glo pterodactyl

You're a heart-shaped box of springs and wire

    You're one badass fucking fractal

And you're just in time to save the day

    Sweeping all our fears away

You can change the world in a tiny way

  • He changed the world in a tiny way. RIP!

  • RIP Mandelbrot

  • good night, sweet prince

  • RIP Benoit Mandelbrot.

  • RIP mandlebrot

  • Are tears self-similar? RIP Mandelbrot

  • @directrix1 Well, tears are sad in themselves, and they come from sad people, so in that sense, yes.

in the sense of the light they reflect, it depends on the lighting because you can get a tear-shaped highlight on a single tear

  • The afterlife just got a little more organized or chaotic, depending on your point of view.

    RIP Mandelbrot.

  • @Supermunch2000 I think he's organizing the chaos of the afterlife.

    RIP, Mandelbrot

  • Rest in peace you magnificent man.

  • Mandelbrot's in heaven.

    RIP.

  • You're one Badass Fuckin' Fractal.

    RIP Benoît B. Mandelbrot (1924-2010).

  • Today, October 15 2010 Benoit Mandelbrot died

  • nice job on the video

  • He is not saying "fractum" but "fractal." A fractal structure is one which exhibits the property of "self-similarity." Just wiki fractal and you will know the truth :)

  • "You're one badass fucking fractum" Is going to be my new status, because it is the best lyric I have ever heard.

  • @Introbulus Whats a fractum?

  • great video

  • Twelve people failed geometry.

  • math is wonderfull....dont understand any of it.....nevertheless mathmations (no I cant spell) are still to me anyway...a scaled down version of God

  • oh nice one!!!!!

  • Wait, what did he say at the end? That this was actually the formula for a julia set? The whole "z1=z squared+c z2=z1 squared+c" thing isn't the mandelbrot set, but this julia set?

  • @Dracowrath1 No, that part is of the Mandelbrot set. But, Mandelbrot set is all about orbiting 0 while the Julian set is the one that is any point in the complex plain and oh my god I just realized how much of a nerd I am.

  • @FatCastro best. youtube comment. ever

  • @FatCastro Yep, the Mandelbrot and Julia sets both use "z --> z^2 + c" ... the difference is that the Mandelbrot starts z at zero and plots how the two components of c cause the point to escape (or not), while Julia set images are usually plotted by selected a fixed pair of component values for c, and plotting how the escape properties change when you alter the two components of the start value of z.

The full Julia set is four-dimensional, and the Mandelbrot Set is a special slice through it.

  • I this, was it Jonathan Coulton at the end, or the people that created the video that was corecting themselves?

  • @GaleRuy JoCo.

  • @GaleRuy it was jonathon coultan

  • Sniff. :')

  • This song made me cry,

    and I'm not sure why.

  • Wow, that was amazing.

  • fractals rule!

  • they spelled genius wrong in t he credits.

  • As the guy said at the end, a true Mandelbrot set is Z1+1=(Z^2)+C.

    Love the animation though.

  • Comment removed

  • I love this song its funny and serious all at the same time Keeeeep Going Jonathon Coulton!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • he kind of sounds like weird al

  • wow Thai students rules!!!
