Thanks for posting this! Although I can't stop crying .... My brother Malcolm served all his working life for the British Royal Navey til we lost him 4 years to cancer The strange thing you feature a Aircraft Carrier. Malcolm worked the Aircraft Carriers all his Naval life So this video is very poinient in many ways.. Once again Thanks!
Met my first girlfriend in Norway in 1961 and when I sang this song to her, she was mine. I was her Sailor. It was our song. I was on an adventure across Northern Europe having just graduated from Durham University UK. Next I met a beautiful German girl from Bremen and nearly 50 years later we are still happily married. But this song reminds me powerfully of my first love. I often wonder what happened to her. Thanks for the post.
as the son of a former merchant navy father 31 torpedoed twice in 3 weeks during war i was proud to sing the song and knew every navy man is important irtespective or royal or civilian they all played their part in feed and protecting us all god keep all sailors male and female everywhere alasdair mac mahon scotland
As an ex merchant navy officer I am very disappointed that not one single image is shown of a merchant navy vessel. Remember there are more merchant navy sailors at sea at any time compared to navy vessels. The merchant marine keeps the worlds economy moving.
The site is great and the song and video is too. A "Birdie" I joined Melbourne in 64 and then 65, 67, 69 70 76, 77, and 80. As an OD Quarter deck was my part of ship, I manned P2 Bofor at action stations and was part of the Cable Party. I think it was great experience as an OD before venturing into the Birdie world. Navy - I loved and I'd do it all again!
No matter where we are, we want to fall into the arms of our love, hug, kiss, and take the scent of her body and cherish it for life.................... then dash in to the room for fun...wow
hey peps i loved this song, simply because i was engagedto a sailor, i was married to hime for 34 years, he alwayssaid i was soft,we whould of been marriedfor 41 years if he was still with us,, i love this song memories, don,t forget 1 mansmeat is another mans poison xx.
Mate, love the pixs and the song. I steamed with some Aussie ships in task force 77 off Korea many moons ago. Hope you have fair winds and following seas>
My mom tells me that when I was a few months old this song was very popular and I would sing along with it when it was playing on the radio. She says it amazed everybody since I was so small, So this song has a certain significance for me.
Great, cant beat the oldies. At least you could understand the words. I am ex Royal Navy. You might like to have a look at a couple of mine posted under "exjackdusty"
Top song. It stirs up great memories of 21 years plus in the RAN, capped off with a magnificent shot of our first "sea daddy" Nobby Clark. You can almost smell cordite and FFO fumes from the destroyers. Maybe a bit too much of the birdie world, but well worth the song and the video. What a time for living and serving.
i heard this, when it first came out!!my uncle was in the merchant navy at the time and even though i was only 7 at the time i have never forgotten it and it still makes me cry even though uncle ken at almost 67 is still alive and kicking, lol
This song has always been popular. For the merchant seamen, of which my darling grandad was one, for the eight generations of seafaring blood I come from, THIS is THEIR song. Lets NOT forget those who went before.
This song has always been popular. I have it on vinyl & played it for my grandad when he got to be ashore! For my grandad, for the eight generations of seafaring blood i come from THIS will always be their song. So not just for current but for the past too. x
@ponytopgun Hi Pony, mate. Thanks for your comment. Yes this music video is getting lots of views from people in Australia and the UK. It's popular with all the mothers, girlfriends, ex-girlfriends and wives of sailors. I think the song (still one of my all time favorites) is the main attraction and the photos of our Aussie navy in action in the 1960's helps to illustrate the song and bring back memories for us ex-sailors. Cheers, mate.
Good onya Stringbean, bugger the knockers mate, that was our time, our ships, our Navy and our lives. Pretty bloody good time to be RAN, Congrats from an ex bubbly mate.
I remember this record along with Ann Shelton's Lay Down Your Arms being played time and again on Forces Favourites on a Sunday afternoon to cheer up our forces serving abroad. Both good songs and singers.
whay a lovely tribute to all the sea men lost .the gent who made a comment about the merchant navy, could have been a bit more polite.my family lost 5 in merchant navy loses during 1939 to 1945.so in one way he was right but not very polite.
What a lot of unnecessary male bitching. Obviously if the man who compiled the collection of photographs to go with the song was from the Australian navy that is what he would have photographs of.
Let's hope we don't all get dragged into another WW or a Western v Eastern conflict and enjoy the song which only mentions sailors and not nations.
I have liked this song since I first heard it. My friends laughed at me when I bought the 45 record of this song IN GERMAN, when I was 13. I had just about forgotten about this song when I heard that Lolita the original singer of this song died last summer. That made me start thinking about this song again. I recently found a backing track for it and recorded this song myself. Please stop by my channel sometine and check it out.
reminds me of my late-boyfriend Russ. Last song in the Dover Castle in Leicester on a Sunday night in the late 1980s. He was a splendid man.please raise a glass to him! cheers Russ! xxx
Where I come from in England this song is often refered to as the local national anthem, so many people and familys were connected with the sea in one way or another, fantastic shots of the Royal Australian Navy.
if you want to see the Original version of this song just type in Lolita Sailor. You will see it done as the original version. Petula Clark does a fantastic job though, don't get me wrong
Interesting to read the recent comments by, obviously, the 'Grey Funnel' (Line) AND the 'Other Lines'! Non sailors might not be aware that the former is gentlemen trying to be sailors and the latter sailors trying to be gentlemen. If you had bothered to create your own version featuring the Merchant Navy I would praise you yo ignorant twit.
@eatmypies i saw a few merchant ships , R F A ,FOURT AUSTIN , fourt grange, regent, tide spring, whatever, all british sailors, makes no odds , without the merchant ships royal ships could not go anywhere, im proud of all the seaman beit royal or merchant, give them the respect they all deserve !! popeye !!

my grandad was in the royal navy and took part in the normandy landings, sadly he passed away 18 months ago and this song was played at his funeral, which was attended by the royal naval association. i love this song x
Thank you for posting this video i was 10 years of age when i was put into a
convalescent home, the nurse used to put us to bed cover the lamp with a towel and play sailor over and over again i used to lay crying as i wanted to go home, i new every word by heart.
@cannoch Hi Cannoch i was put into a convalesant home i was told at the time i needed to be built up as i was very thin, I was only ten years old so i new no different.I asked my mother over the years why i was put into the home but never got any answers X
I was urged to get up and dance with my wife, many years ago to this song by an older gentelman, while on holiday in Majorca. I have two left feet but with a gut full of sangdria i felt obligued. We did the song well as we were clapped off the dance floor to raptious shouts of, Dae it again Jimmy'. Says it all.lol That was in 1985, I think, and treasure the memories. I was only 20 something, if.lol
Fantastic voice and fabulous voice of Petula Clark. This song brings back so much of my fond memories of the 60's. Thank you for posting this very lovely and touching song. Dr. Leow
As a young boy I fell in love with this song. Lo and behold I became a sailor and traveled the world. I been to three of the four places in this song. And when the tide did turned, I came home for good to my Cindy. Another Sailor song. God Bless the men and women who sail the seas and keep us free.
During WW11 the Andrews Sisters had a hit song called The Blond Sailor. My sister played it all the time because her husband was a blond sailor. I believe it also ws a German song originally
I agree this reminds me of my dad when he sailed with HMAS Melbourne in 44 unfortunatly gone now but it was his favorite and mine to i love the words iwas 7 when i first heard it now 47 years on stil a pleasure to listen to.
I didn't know this version existed until afew days ago when I found it by searching for the one by Lolita. This is very quickly becoming one of my favorite Petula Clark songs, and I don't seem to get tired of listening to it. God Bless Youtube!
Well done Stringbean. I can assure you that Sailors throughout the world, regardless of country, have a special feeling for all other sailors. This is a great song and makes me proud to have served in the United States Navy.
this was the very first record (vinyl) i ever bought i was 9 at the time and its still one of my most favourite songs and brings back loads of happy childhood memories
I have for many years since my brother was a seaman liked this song. I know 3 versions only: German, English and Swedish but I didn't knew there were a French one by Petula Clark. Wonder how many versions there are in other languages.
My son is in the aussie navy, whenever he is away I always play this to think of him and pray for fair winds and following seas. Come home safely always HMAS Tobruk. Mum loves you!
Hey guys. I'm looking for the norwegian version of this song. In norwegian its called "sjømann" i think. If somebody could help me with this, i woud be really thankful.
This is just brilliant - just paid off after 27 years in the 'Puss' (RAN). Great song and great ship at the start (D39) is HMAS HOBART (DDG39) 'The Greem Ghost'. Served in HOBART in 1986, 1993 and 1996-97.
Yes it's a great song in any language. I also like the German and French versions. If you want to see more memories of HMAS Melbourne click on the link above = More From: stringbean001 for a video about HMAS Melbourne.

Sorry to hear you were in a home at 10 years old, I was only 3 y/o when this was released, but my big sis played it endlessly.
This is a classic song, and to me will always remain so,
Hope life turned out ok for you.

Well done Stringbean. I can assure you that Sailors throughout the world, regardless of country, have a special feeling for all other sailors. This is a great song and makes me proud to have served in the United States Navy.

This is just brilliant - just paid off after 27 years in the 'Puss' (RAN). Great song and great ship at the start (D39) is HMAS HOBART (DDG39) 'The Greem Ghost'. Served in HOBART in 1986, 1993 and 1996-97.
