  • I've always liked this song but I found out today this song was #1 in the UK during the week I was born back in '61. Pretty cool!

  • beautiful song. One of my favourites. I'm only 19 but 60's and 70's music has always been my favourite. Petula is my second fave singer

My brother Malcolm served all his working life for the British Royal Navey til we lost him 4 years to cancer The strange thing you feature a Aircraft Carrier. Malcolm worked the Aircraft Carriers all his Naval life So this video is very poinient in many ways.. Once again Thanks!

  • Met my first girlfriend in Norway in 1961 and when I sang this song to her, she was mine. I was her Sailor. It was our song. I was on an adventure across Northern Europe having just graduated from Durham University UK. Next I met a beautiful German girl from Bremen and nearly 50 years later we are still happily married. But this song reminds me powerfully of my first love. I often wonder what happened to her. Thanks for the post.

  • great song i just love it

  • as the son of a former merchant navy father 31 torpedoed twice in 3 weeks during war i was proud to sing the song and knew every navy man is important irtespective or royal or civilian they all played their part in feed and protecting us all god keep all sailors male and female everywhere alasdair mac mahon scotland

  • great song sang by one beautiful woman

  • As an ex merchant navy officer I am very disappointed that not one single image is shown of a merchant navy vessel. Remember there are more merchant navy sailors at sea at any time compared to navy vessels. The merchant marine keeps the worlds economy moving.

  • my auntie shela sang this at my uncle brians wedding..god i miss her so......love trev..xxxxx

  • Hi Bevin,

The site is great and the song and video is too. A "Birdie" I joined Melbourne in 64 and then 65, 67, 69 70 76, 77, and 80. As an OD Quarter deck was my part of ship, I manned P2 Bofor at action stations and was part of the Cable Party. I think it was great experience as an OD before venturing into the Birdie world. Navy - I loved and I'd do it all again!

    Cheers, Jack Davey

  • My first seagoing draft was to the West Indies, this reminds me of that time, Brilliant.

  • omg to painfull to listern to, it brings back to many memories xx.

  • No matter where we are, we want to fall into the arms of our love, hug, kiss, and take the scent of her body and cherish it for life.................... then dash in to the room for fun...wow

  • greetings from the USN. this is an incredible song. makes me wish i had a lady singing it to me while i am out there.

  • Mate, love the pixs and the song. I steamed with some Aussie ships in task force 77 off Korea many moons ago. Hope you have fair winds and following seas>

  • 50 years on people still regard it highly can you say that about music 2day

  • a song sung by my mother for my father

  • My mom tells me that when I was a few months old this song was very popular and I would sing along with it when it was playing on the radio. She says it amazed everybody since I was so small, So this song has a certain significance for me.

  • This song orginaly in German Petula oes a great englih vesion . My mom used to sing this to me . What great memories thank you

  • yes it is a good song

  • Great, cant beat the oldies. At least you could understand the words. I am ex Royal Navy. You might like to have a look at a couple of mine posted under "exjackdusty"

  • Top song. It stirs up great memories of 21 years plus in the RAN, capped off with a magnificent shot of our first "sea daddy" Nobby Clark. You can almost smell cordite and FFO fumes from the destroyers. Maybe a bit too much of the birdie world, but well worth the song and the video. What a time for living and serving.

  • i heard this, when it first came out!!my uncle was in the merchant navy at the time and even though i was only 7 at the time i have never forgotten it and it still makes me cry even though uncle ken at almost 67 is still alive and kicking, lol

  • This song has always been popular. For the merchant seamen, of which my darling grandad was one, for the eight generations of seafaring blood I come from, THIS is THEIR song. Lets NOT forget those who went before.

  • This song has always been popular. I have it on vinyl & played it for my grandad when he got to be ashore! For my grandad, for the eight generations of seafaring blood i come from THIS will always be their song. So not just for current but for the past too. x

  • Love this my dad used to play this all the time when i was little always makes me cry now love & miss you dad xxxx

  • this is an all time great a true classic and will go for ever

  • this is an all time great

  • Popular vid Stringbean - 208709 views!

At lights out on the Melbourne they used to play something like "Goodnight Sweetheart" - can't remember the female singer but it was sexy!

    Pony

  • @ponytopgun Hi Pony, mate. Thanks for your comment. Yes this music video is getting lots of views from people in Australia and the UK. It's popular with all the mothers, girlfriends, ex-girlfriends and wives of sailors. I think the song (still one of my all time favorites) is the main attraction and the photos of our Aussie navy in action in the 1960's helps to illustrate the song and bring back memories for us ex-sailors. Cheers, mate.

  • @stringbean001 I had my first record player when I was 14 and this was the first single I ever played on it.

A great song and great memories revived. Thanks for uploading.

  • fantastic

  • Good onya Stringbean, bugger the knockers mate, that was our time, our ships, our Navy and our lives. Pretty bloody good time to be RAN, Congrats from an ex bubbly mate.

  • R.I.P the British navy. Once the envy of the world, reduced to a token gesture. Well done the politicians.

  • Come home sailor Gods Speed

  • I remember this record along with Ann Shelton's Lay Down Your Arms being played time and again on Forces Favourites on a Sunday afternoon to cheer up our forces serving abroad. Both good songs and singers.

  • hi.

whay a lovely tribute to all the sea men lost .the gent who made a comment about the merchant navy, could have been a bit more polite.my family lost 5 in merchant navy loses during 1939 to 1945.so in one way he was right but not very polite.

  • What a lot of unnecessary male bitching. Obviously if the man who compiled the collection of photographs to go with the song was from the Australian navy that is what he would have photographs of.

Let's hope we don't all get dragged into another WW or a Western v Eastern conflict and enjoy the song which only mentions sailors and not nations.

  • I checked you out I´m agree with you an old sweet song who have got many nice comment like you deserve...mar kjartansson blog Mingler.dk

  • I have liked this song since I first heard it. My friends laughed at me when I bought the 45 record of this song IN GERMAN, when I was 13. I had just about forgotten about this song when I heard that Lolita the original singer of this song died last summer. That made me start thinking about this song again. I recently found a backing track for it and recorded this song myself. Please stop by my channel sometine and check it out.

  • I've always loved this song, and your "creative treatment" really enhanced it.

  • This was when navies were NAVIES ex guzz

  • was with uss enterprise. a sailor indeed

  • Where I come from in England this song is often refered to as the local national anthem, so many people and familys were connected with the sea in one way or another, fantastic shots of the Royal Australian Navy.

  • Beautiful!!! I have the German version of this and now I know what is being said. Great pictures also.

  • if you want to see the Original version of this song just type in Lolita Sailor. You will see it done as the original version. Petula Clark does a fantastic job though, don't get me wrong

  • Damn those lyrics, they are so true.....

  • Great song good video ignore the ignorant

  • I just love to waltz to this one. good tune

  • What can I say? Brilliaqnt

  • Interesting to read the recent comments by, obviously, the 'Grey Funnel' (Line) AND the 'Other Lines'! Non sailors might not be aware that the former is gentlemen trying to be sailors and the latter sailors trying to be gentlemen. Being, myself, one of the latter but having been shoreside now for over 40 years, I still have vivid memories of listening to this song, in Amsterdam, prior to sailing for the 'joys' of, the then Colonial, West Africa. This preceding the 'real' joys of the

  • @craig140183 The Best Navy in the world Australian Navy

  • LOVELY SONG,BUT HAVE BEEN A BIT BETTER WITH MERCHANT NAVY SHIPS ON IT.YOU WERENT THE ONLY ONES TO LOSE LIVES,YOU WOULD THINK YOU WAS THE ONLY NAVY THAT EVER EXISTED IN THIS COUNTRY,57,000 MERCHANT SEAMAN DIED

  • @eatmypies I can't agree with your comment. In stead of criticising my creative treatment of the song you would be better off creating your own version of the song for your Merchant Navy mates. If you had bothered to create your own version featuring the Merchant Navy I would praise you yo ignorant twit.

  • @stringbean001 yes a saior means anyone who sails the sea,so a great song and love your pics

  • @historicbloke a very good song one of the best they do not write good song like that any more

  • @eatmypies theres nowhere to suggest the video has anything to do with dying sailors! I would imagine it could be for any seafairing persons

  • @eatmypies i saw a few merchant ships , R F A ,FOURT AUSTIN , fourt grange, regent, tide spring, whatever, all british sailors, makes no odds , without the merchant ships royal ships could not go anywhere, im proud of all the seaman beit royal or merchant, give them the respect they all deserve !! popeye !!

  • I was urged to get up and dance with my wife, many years ago to this song by an older gentelman, while on holiday in Majorca. I have two left feet but with a gut full of sangdria i felt obligued. We did the song well as we were clapped off the dance floor to raptious shouts of, Dae it again Jimmy'. Says it all.lol That was in 1985, I think, and treasure the memories. I was only 20 something, if.lol
