On a conventional road bike, no.
They aren't riding road bikes per se, they're riding Cyclocross (also known as Cyclo-X) bikes. Wider, knobby tyres, stronger wheelsets and different brakes (usually cantilever or V brakes). They'll do almost everything a conventional cross country bike will do.
