  • lol at 4:15 when he realizes the guy in his class has missed some things in physics class.

  • Great series of lectures. Thanks to Leonard Susskind and Stanford. Number 2 lecture starts to get the brain cells working.

  • nice one! very informative video!

  • 1:47:23 the classic implied Susskind Facepalm

  • darn, some of those elite students (if that's what they are) really like to ask simple questions for their own sakes.

  • @scavengedfantasyname I think they aren't really physics students, this course is a general introduction and something Stanford offers to everyone who wants to learn about science.

  • I come late to this discussion but, since we are clearly in a universe that is the same in every direction, farther than the eye can see, how is that not like being inside the hollow sphere example Susskind uses? Why, then, is there any assumption gravity EVER slows the expansion of the universe?

Secondly, the galaxies should have been Bob Carol Ted and Alice,

  • How can Bob see Alices child if they are 10 parsecs away?

  • One question. Since Newtonian physics forces us to only observe galaxies that are somewhat close to us, doesn't the galaxies particular deviations in velocity become a problem when determining the Hubble-constant? Doesn't these deviations become less important the farther away you look?

  • Thanks to everyone involved in making this video.

  • cannot see the video "An error occured please try again later"

  • @rnh I do that too. Good night :)

  • am i the only one who cones to these videos to get some sleep?

  • face it.. spiritual belief is a direct parallel to a security blanket or an invisible friend with a child.. its not horrible.. it has its place in their development.. but at no point should we cater their belief around like some sort of source for salvation, or driving force behind a requirement to share and witness people estranged from that child's belief... we don't force all children to have the same invisible friend

I don't mind what you do in your house.. keep it there though.. i do!

  • The man has put his mind to brilliant use. I'd easily say that he's more brilliant than 99.9999% of the people on youtube, so ignore the posts and watch the videos!

Besides, religion is absurd in this context in the sense that it cannot be proven and seems to have no measurable properties in and of itself so it has no place in this discussion. Any injection of religion should be removed.

So delete this post? : )

  • susskind is god.

  • comments shouldnt be allowed....

  • How come every science uses ancient Greek words? Enough, I'm Greek and I'm sick of it. Why not use Chinese? Greek is not that great of a language anyway, at least for science! The word cosmology comes from the idea that the world was created by a huge egg cut in top and bottom, the ancient Greeks of course stole that idea from Mesopotamia. With mesopotamian knowledge the Greeks made mechanical computers (like the Anti kithira device) which calculated where the planets should be

  • @kkonstantinosss2 And of course the Greek mathematicians then fought about the issue of the Heliocentric and Geocentric models, and guess what, The equations worked anyway you wanted them to work, so for some it was heliocentric and for some it was geocentric, My question is (Does it really matter?) What if you took the earth to be still and the sun to be moving, practicaly it is the same thing. Speed relative to what? Even if the sun is so much more massive still our measurements are subjective

  • Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • @fertilizerspike If I was looking up at the sky, pointing at the moon saying "It sure looks nice tonight" you would be saying "No, there's dirt under the nail".

  • @fertilizerspike And your argument has none either, because you are clearly missing the point.

  • @fertilizerspike Good luck with that. You and your like minded friends feeble attempts at stalling both science and education will probably be looked at as an aberration by future historians.

  • Ummm, it would be nice if Leo would just give a few words of how Newton's Theorem follows from calculus....

  • Ummm, am I alone in thinking that the students in this class are way too dumb?

  • We are so small in the whole scheme of things......

  • @FrenchExpat1 Ummm, e=mc^2 is small in the whole scheme of things.... so is

y = mx + b, or the fundamental theorem of calculus.

  • i would say intelligence lies in the understanding of the consequences of an action through inference our prediction, wisdom lies in the ability to understand how insignificant an inference can be rendered at any point in time..knowing but knowing that what you know is a fragment of what could be known or what is. now we can all stop talking about how right we are, intake the amazing amount of information that is available to us, have the most educated opinion we can.. our social responsibility

  • Gracias a la StanforUniversiti por estas clases.

  • Susskind teaching cosmology, testing conformity?

Delivering hypothetical constants in order to make mathematical abstractions appear tangible?

Make data agree with points of scientific dogma by factoring equations designed specifically to hide facts anomalous to a cannon of thought.

Comparing sensory inputs under meditation all principles will become apparent. The Nomenclature to describe these principles is best described using or condensed or vocal imagery, possibly dance, not mathematics.

  • THANKS!

  • God? Which god are you people referring to? Zeus; Thor; Allah; Quetzacotal Or maybe one of the hundreds of thousands of other of other gods?

  • Comment removed

  • lol thermodynamics has prooven nothing is infinite it only changes from IE energy and everything is made from energy so to me there is no god

  • I think there's a better chance that the electricity of the brain can be hacked via sensory input.

How can an internal field configuration store the same information as an external field configuration?

  • @smangano64 This is what I do when people bring in that particular variable, or you could say "God". You should tell them "I shall not debate you, if you bring in Impossible variables into a argument where we are trying to explain what we know is possible as of right now. Therefor your argument is invalid in my eyes.". At this point I will ignore them if they don't listen because they are not following the rules of the debate. Therefor you lost the debate. If you get my analogy.

  • @smangano64 You should not judge any organisms intelligence by what it knows, or the facts that it can memorize, but what that organism is curious to learn and expand his consciousness. In my opinion you should always try to keep your mind open to any possibility, but if some of those possibilities are disproved or contradicts the laws of your Universe, that would be IMPOSSIBLE until it would be proven wrong, but still millions of people will not educate them selfs on that subject. Creationism

  • @smangano64 scientists should go to religious videos and discuss cosmology, oh wait they have better things to do.

  • @smangano64 Science is the quest for knowledge and without considering the unknown and unproven how then can one hope to be truely knowledgable? I challenge that in truth it is over YOUR head, the answere come from question that which is unknown, you will never learn anything by denying the unprovable, copernicus for example was highly religious and yet he challenge the bible in search of truth, science and religion have worked very well together in history, don't be too quick to mock the idea

  • @EMOjamesy23 God does exist -- in your head that is. This video was not uploaded so we can discuss what is in your head. Discuss that with your therapist, priest, girlfriend, whoever. Just don't discuss it here because it is a complete non sequitur.

  • @smangano64 excuse me but at no point did I claim that God exists, I said that to be a great scientist you have to wonder about what exist beyond what you can see, Stephen Hawking does that, wonders about what might be outside our universe, can you alone say for sure that the "big bang" was not intentional? perhaps an experiment created by intelligent life, maybe more.... or perhaps ofcourse it was just chance, I believe in the truth, and so I will not rule out creation until it is proven wrong.

  • @EMOjamesy23 Well then at no point did I criticize "wondering" in the way you attribute to Hawking and others. Of course we must imagine and wonder as well as theorize and compute. (cont..)

  • @EMOjamesy23 My original post was in response to a bunch of commentary about God and the bible (which I don't seem to see here anymore so maybe it got deleted). The point is that if someone goes to a lecture about cosmology and raises their hand and starts asking questions (or making assertions) about how the bible fits in then they are just being plain rude.

  • @smangano64 i would also like to point out that the bible is merely one book, there are many others which make referance to divine intervention, much of it is bound to be useless speculation, but the fact is we DO NOT know. As a physicist you cannot be sceptical of anything, or you may never find the answeres, I hope you understand that as the world needs more good scientists, people that think outside the box, in anycase i find it immature to "argue" on youtube so this will be my last response

  • @EMOjamesy23 Beside the fact that most of the world does not even use the bible, it is completely off topic and distracting to those who came to learn something in particular.

  • @smangano64 actually most physicists including susskind here have read and taken note of the bible, most of it makes reference to real historical events. cosmology is the study of the beginning, even hawking himself refers to the "big bang" as "the moment of creation". even as an atheist he is still widely open to the possibility of divine creation, as physicists we look for answeres, we do not exclude ANY possibility. and FYi the bible is the most sold book in history.

  • @EMOjamesy23

    a) u are not a physicist - from what I can tell from your profile you are like 17 or something. Go do a phd in physics and then we'll talk. b) the bible is the biggest piece of trash literature ever produced.

And that is just about all I have left to say on the matter.

  • @smangano64 alright im not leaving at that

    a) i study mathematics and physics at CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY thank you very much, you can never hope to get into a university like this, i'm far more qualified than you

and b) the fact you insult me proves you are getting defensive and know you are wrong, you're not very intelligent and not very mature

    c) the fact you looked at my profile means you were desperate to find something to use against me, well you failed, im studying for a masters in maths.

  • @EMOjamesy23 no, i visit your profile to see who it is I am talking to. And I think your profile speaks for itself. good luck at CAMBRIDGE.

  • @smangano64 You´re an person with poor mind skills with a tendency to zero, "the bible is the biggest piece of trash literature ever produced."? , I´m a physicist, I have a lot of time doing research in so many areas: Bose-Einstein condensates, photon mass, HTSC, change of dimensionality, etc and none of this things can bring you more peace that a good reading of the Biblie with Faith, but some people like you can't apreciate it, because you have a poor mind and a ill soul. Think before speak.

  • Comment removed

  • @condestable777 Calling a book "trash" is a matter of opinion. He is entitled to his subjective evaluation of the bible as trash. And you are entitled to your subjective evaluation of the bible as not trash. But it is YOU committing a mental error by claiming "nothing can bring you more peace" than reading the bible. That is nonsense. You can at most say "nothing brings ME more peace." Someone else might get more peace from a different book. That doesn't mean they have "poor mind and ill soul."

  • @condestable777 There is no objective basis whatsoever by which you can declare someone else's lack of enthusiasm for your favorite book of ancient myths to be indicative of a poor mind and soul. That is as arrogant and ignorant as saying "if anyone doesn't get goosebumps from reading the new Harry Potter book like I do, that person must be retarded!"

  • lol iron u made me smile =D

  • will god be angry if i watch this?

  • No, Dr. Susskind will allow it. ;)

  • @twiddle7125 Are you Agnostic, or are you a Creationist I wasn't to clear the way you made the text?

  • It's all so much clearer now. Thanks!!
