Golden retrievers rule. The breed began as a strain of wavy-coat. They are also older than the first yellow labs, because the first golden retriever was born in 1864. The first yellow lab was registered in 1899.
And tall. Lighter-boned as well. Very similar to flat-coated retrievers (which makes total sense, considering they were originally called Golden Flat-coats).
Goldens can range from red to almost white. Have you seen Oprahs goldens? They are gorgeous and almost white. I have one that is redish and one that is pretty light but not white. Supposedly the red ones are lower breeding quality. I don't believe it though. Both of mine are great!
The red ones are field-bred or working-strain. They tend to be much more active and much more reactive. They are easier to train, but they require much more mental and physical exercise. They aren't lower breeding quality, unless you are talking about the show-bred dogs. A field or obedience trial dog or one that can be used for assistance work or search and rescue can be just as valuable as a show dog.
It's very hard to win show prizes with a dark Golden. Their is a preference for the practically snow white ones. This seems to contravene the rules, where it says the dog must be "golden in colour"
Originally, they were all red. The first Golden retriever, Nous, was a red-gold dog. Cream originally meant cream shadings on a gold dog, not the almost white color. If you don't believe me, take a look at some pictures of Goldens from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century-- when they were a color variety of flat-coated retriever. Yellow labs were also red in color originally.
