I remember watching a Saints vs Aeros game - a bench-clearing brawl (and I mean everyone fought, not just grabbed and danced). At the end, the two goalies skated to center ice, dropped their gloves and duked it out. Classic!!!
Best playoff I ever saw was between the Aeros and Fighting Saints in 1974 for sheer intimidation and just plain toughness. Every game was fight filled and in one of the games at the old Sam Houston Coliseum the fights continued outside the rink as the visitors had to exit near the goal line and then walk through the public concourse to get to their dressing room. Just great memories would love to have a video of this entire series.
Every time Gordy Howe would come to town he and Gordie Gallant would have a go. I never saw Howe lose, but I saw fights to a draw and I saw Gallant get beat. Man that Howe was a tough dude.
VJChula you are absolutely correct, and thanks for the correction. The old WHA had a lot of gypsy franchises, and the Mariners joined the Ottawa Civics, the Michigan Stags, the Jersey Blades and a bunch of other teams who tried to make a go in that crazy league. Got to see a lot of those teams playing the Cincy Stingers in the Old Riverfront Coliseum. But my fave was the IHL Dayton Gems, with tuff hombres like Goldy, Willy Trognitz and Bill Riley going toe to toe every night...
I saw the Fighting Saints play the Whalers a couple of times in the pre season at the Bayfront Center in St. Pete, Florida back in the 70's. That was the first time I ever saw a game between two big league clubs. Long live the Suncoast Suns!
Love that shot of Billy Goldthorpe of the old and forgotten Sand Diego Gulls backing away from a scrum at the 2:07 mark. Goldy, who was the template for the goon Ogie Ogelthorpe in the movie Slap Shot, didn't turn down many chances to drop the gloves, but this must have been point in his career he tried to go legit. He was back with the Columbus Owls the next years splitting faces in the IHL. Thanks for posting and giving today's kids a glimpse at what old school hockey was about.
Luved the Fighting Saints. My all time favorite hockey team. Too bad we didn't have an owner who could run that team properly. And they could have beaten the North Stars every night and twice on Sunday. The Carlsons were what put the Fighting in the F.S. They later starred in Slap Shot, except for Jack. But he was the toughest of them all. Thanks for the video.
anybody remember the goon the saints had who would leave the penalty box with out his stick or gloves and when he was told he forgot them he would say "I'll be right back".Now that is a tough guy goon!!!!
awesome, the St. Paul Fighting Saints were fun to watch back in the day.The old Civic center was state of the art for the times. I remember going to watch my favorite player Mike Antonovich and hitting White Castle on the way home before falling asleep in the back of our station wagon. Wow great times!!!
Great video and even better music. What are the band/performer and the song called? Man, it must have been quite strange to play with those glass boards. Still, really cool footage of old time hockey. Thanks for posting!
Those glass boards are awesome. I remember those as a kid but couldn't remember which WHA team had them. Minnisota F.S ? My friends thought I was crazy when I'd tell them about them. Well Now!!!
My cousin Gord Gallant played in the WHA with the Fighting Saints and others....does anybody have anything at all with Gordy on video...Plz contact me on You Tube my handle is Krokus69...........Thanks
