A while ago, I composed some modest web-pages about the history of this interesting but so far unlucky means of transportation. Also included are some drawings showing the principle of the control system:
trail+yoll+net/zola/transport/cabinentaxi
(Nite: Replace "+" with "." in the above links, because comments including links are not accepted by youtube...)
Cabintaxi technology is a mass transit system with a capacity on the two/way beam shown of 28,000 seats/hour. Not a concept: completed under the review of German Railroad safety experts - accepted by Germany and the United States for installation in their cities.
Real transit systems, meant to serve urban areas, not suburban sprawl, provide mobility to thousands per hour - home to work, to store, to.., etc.
The bicycle is elegant, but think about a street carrying 28,000 bicycles p/h.
@palegrey If you're in a dense neighborhood, this really wouldn't seem too out of place. I don't think these would be built in a freaking subdivision. And if they were, they'd be much closer to the ground and be travelling on their own right of way along a main road.
I remember seeing this track in Vorhalle in Hagen in the 70s. It was located near "Gut Schönfeld" next to the Autobahn A1. These days there are no relicts from that time.
I then contacted some of the Mannesmann or Thyssen (?) engeneers a while ago and they said that you actually may find some of the old cabins at the yards of some local houses. Well, I did not find any, yet.
But this project was ahead of its time, I guess. Is is possible that some pictures of the clip were taken in Wuppertal?
When the track in Vorhalle was stopped, some of the vehicles were given over for "gartenhauschen." With their aluminum frames they may still be found. All of the pictures that you see of urban settings taken from within the vehicles are of Wuppertal. The street scenes are from downtown Wetter.
While the system may have been ahead of its time, its time will probably still come, as nothing that has been conceived to date surpasses this completed system.
If the sound was originally recorded on (professorial quality) tape, and those tapes still exist, that would be a good source for re mastering the sound.
By the way, the audio visual quality suggests that the sound is from and optical track from the film rather than a separate soundtrack tape and the preservation print is far from best possible. Is this a direct transfer of the oringial negative or is it from a print? If this is from a print and the original negatives still exist, why not remaster this video from that stock.
Pure genius ! Imagine where we'd be now, if we'd spend the last 30 years building and expanding this system. There would be no pollution problem, oil crisis, etc....no worrying about car repairs, depreciation, etc.
Some time ago when seeing this video the first time and far before the time of YouTube I asked myself, what's the music in background. For me it's an instrumental version of Michel Delpech's "Pour un Flirt" (1971).
"... extremely high vehicle flow rate possible at any speed."
Dude ... pass the bong.
"minimum headway of two seconds ..."
... at high speed, 8 meters up in the air. Uh ... no thanks. I'll stick with my BICYCLE — the ultimate transit technology. You know ... "simple, safe and silent."
worst idea since the wheel.

@weplay Das Kabinentaxi selber wurde in Hagen getestet und die Bilder aus der Fahrgastperspektive wurden in Wuppertal aus der Schwebebahn gemacht.

The film from which this video was made was done in optical and magnetic sound. This video was remastered from the optial version.

If you want, I can send you a download Link for the original Video I used. I think its an MPEG.
I dont have a Tape of the Video.

I so wish this had been realized. :( This is true PRT at it's best, along with the Morgantown PRT.

"A large test track facility was built in Hagen, Germany, that was used for an extensive testing program conducted from 1973 to 1979."
You can find a lot of info on Professor Jerry Schneider's website. Google "innovative transportation" and it should be one of the first links.

Just brilliant. So retro and utopian. Is this test track in Hagen? I was there but I never saw it.

See JPods, Ultra, Vectus to see a modern application of similar technology.
