@miketh6 Uh, yes, there is. Old English became Middle English, became Modern English as we know it today...the language has been evolving for the past 5 or 6 hundred years.
When we see Grendel's mother in person, she looks human, but when you look closely at her face in in the water in this scene, she appears as a monsterous creature. It's odd that we never see her true monstrous form throughout the movie.
In a way, I'm glad that we don't get to see her true form in its entirety. While I am curious as to what she looks like, it added some mystery about her.
Grendel speaks Old English here and says the following: Grendel's mother: My son! my poor son! Grendel: Mother! Grendel: He beat me, mother! Grendel's mother: Sleep now, my son. Grendel: He murdered me, mother! Grendel's mother: Who murdered you, my son? Grendel: He ripped off my arm! Grendel's mother: He will pay, my darling. Who was the man? Grendel: He was so strong, so strong! Grendel's mother: Who was the man? Grendel: His ... his...name was....Beowulf.
Anyone take notice that Grendel's mother's true form can be seen in the reflection of the water when she is talking to Grendel? And take note on how it's a golden dragon... Just like her other son (for the case of the film, respectively).
I can't believe people slept with Grendel's Mom. If you look in the reflection you can see her hideous form. Although she was hot, people need to remember that she's a demon >8(
I feel bad for Grendel but it wasn't because he was forced to listen to the music people played at parties. You can see the pain in his face and they do a close up on his ear and the sound of loud noises hurts his ear. He is suffering but in actual pain. Even Beowulf screams and Grendel covers his ears because the sound hurts him.
@Suckyguitarist18 did you read the book right? Grendel mainly stands for everything that's evil and the killing of brothers. Grendel is NOT a good guy lol, he's one of Beowulf's main enemies.
The book Grendel is taking the story into his perspective. It's about 170ish pages long; a good read.
If you read that, you'd probably have a different opinion. In fact, you'd even think Beowulf would be the villain. Even so, he still had to die, he was killing people and what not.
@JacksonComedyStudios I actually do not want to read any spinoffs to Beowulf because Beowulf's original story was oral. When it was written, it was written by a Christian monk in which parts of the story were hidden/changed up for the story to be well....more christian. Thus the original story has been altered. In addition, the book the monk wrote was partially burned in a fire and pieces of it was saved. So whatever was burned is gone. AND the original writing was translated.
@JacksonComedyStudios In other words, the legitimacy of how accurate the original Beowulf story is weak enough as it and reading a spinoff would only make it more innaccurrate. BUT, that's not to say reading spinoffs can't be read for fun ;P
Grendel was not a tortured soul, he wasn't a victim of any kind, he wasn't good in any sense, he was a horrific, selfish monster who despised humans. I liked the movie, but turning a vile creature into a tormented, misunderstood creature seems like a weird move.
wrong!!!!!!!!!!! everyone had to pay a very hefty fine for killling even the most unimportant citizen. this still doesnt compare to a mass murdering fucking ass hole monster.
@ragingbull2001 But the warriors of Hrothgar got away with murder many times because of their twisted social system of thanes and kings. The average thief would hang for stealing bread and yet the thane who would kill his own brother in a drunken rage would go free under his kings will. After reading John Gardener's interpretation, you get to see things quite clearly that Beowulf conveniently left out.
does anybody else see the parallel between grendel (and his mom) dwelling in the underground water cave to the way gollum lived under the misty mountains?
tolkien wrote the first and best literary critiques of beowulf named "the monsters and the critics".
@SinDawg030 'Mother...help me mother...he, murdered me mother...somethingsomethinig ripped off my arm... he was so strong..he's, he's the man who is (not sure), beowulf.'? Don't think all of it's old english, strong is spelt straunge so might or might not sound different to what it sounds like here so who knows. I ain't J.R.R Tolkien so don't fly of the handle if I'm wrong, that's what it sounds like is all
@rahkshi101 Wow, you're grasp of Old English is awesome. I could never understand a single bloody word when I did Chaucer at School. Thanks a million for getting a rough translation. Guess even bad guys love their mums :3
@TheOriginalThought1 - There is no mention of "trolls" in the Beowulf manuscript. The monster Grendel belonged to a species that was also known on other parts of Europe, including England. Grendel could not be killed - not because he was big - but because his thick, armored hide could not be penetrated by spears, arrows, swords and the like. I find it unlikely that the Vikings, whose Beserker warriors terrorized much of coastal Europe, were themselves rendered helpless with terror by a troll?
it´s not old anything... all that was done was changing the pronoun "my" with the danish pronoun "min" and the dialect is sometimes also danish (e.g. the -ed ending in "ripped" is pronunced with danish dialect, also "mother" since the scandinavian languages does not have the -th sound it is a clear -t sound instead)
@dudev I know English is a Germanic language. That's why I said Old English would sound kind of like German to a modern English speaker. In any case, I've seen what Beowulf and Canterbury Tales look like in their original formats, and I maintain that Old and Middle English are barely recognizable.

Grendel is a demon born of Cain's clan, the very same Cain who killed his brother Abel in the biblical story. After Cain was outcast by God into Hell, all a manner of unholy creatures were summoned and born from Cain's prescence, thus Cain's clan was formed.
Grendel's mother was born from that clan, and it is implied in the poem that she copulated with Cain, giving birth to Grendel.
Grendel is not a tortured soul. He is a pure evil, demonic beast with a blood-lust and an intense hatred of God.
@Meskiagkasher It was always part of the tale. The original Beowulf was folklore tale, which also talked of how Grendel was related to Cain. I'm guessing the people who came up with the folktale thought that just sounded cool.

i felt deep sorry for him in the movie, i man seriosly...

and hes eardrum, man, i get crazy when the train stops in the station becuz its so painfull for my ears, everytime something harms my ears, i go fucking mad,! so who woudn't in Grendel's place?
@Thelordofall2 Grendel wasn't evil, the way i see it. he was like a suffering child, and like a child, he threw a tantrum because of it. day after day, he was forced to listen to the music that people played at parties. it tortured him so much, he wanted it to stop. so he attacked them, trying to put a stop to the music. he ended up killing others in the process. they were angered by this, and had beowulf kill him, which he did. Grendel was just a tortured soul, who wanted peace and quiet.
@theninjamandude Grendel is the Demon child of one of the Choas Gods of Norse mythology, or evil gods. Beowulf was the half son of a god, and Grendel, killed millions of inocent people throughout that land.
@theninjamandude these are the same type of rationalizations that many psychopaths use.(I'm not saying you are. too much empathy for such actions like ripping heads off and drinking the blood,or eating people like our'duerves is a little much to have sympathy with.even if it was a big retard.in legend beowulf fought a dragon which was a dinasaur, remananst still being about legend based on real event.
@theninjamandude Eh, when I read the poem (in old english, which naturally took forever) Grendel sounds as if he is the ultimate evil, other than satan of course.
@theNEWMASKSdudexxx The poem was first written down by a Christian monk who used the opportunity to do a little evangelising. The original poem just had Grendel as a murderous outcast.
@theninjamandude I've recently read the graphic novel version and noticed similarities to the "7 Deadly Sins" Grendel was nonsexual lust, as he craved to have what the people of Geatland had, gluttony as he wouldn't stop what he was doing, and either greed or envy.
movie left a few unanswered questions...eg.why did Grendel attack the village and kill people...what happened to the king at the end was he tempted by the female demon? but i loved the movie
@zehavo Grendel has external ear drums, so he could hear for miles, and them yelling and singing ect... was causing him a LOT of pain, so he killed them out of agony
They've monkeyed around with the Anglo-Saxon to make it intelligible to modern audiences. "Min earma sunu" becomes "min poor son." It even sounds like she says "min darling" at one point
poor grendel? he was the one who started the problem. beowulf just finished it and kicked his ass, without killing him. grendel killed i don't know how many people. that's good for him. he got his just deserts. then wanna wine when he gets whooped? screw that! go beowulf, fuck grendel, he died like a punk and cry to his mommy. what a pussy
true, there's no cops or anything. but still, they were just having a good time. grendel couldv'e asked them to quiet down. he speaks. but no, he wanna come and smash everything and everybody. so beowulf had to put em in his place
@4thtroika I'm with you on this one- God knows how many times I wish I could've ripped the arms off noisy, drunken neighbours. Besides it was Grendel's Daddy's fault- this is what happens when fathers neglect their kids.
That's not Old English. Grendel (G) (Roughly what he's saying) Grendel's Mom (GM): Me sona, my poor son... G: Mother....helpa me mother. GM: Sleep now my son. G: He....murderered me mother. GM: Who murdered you my son? G: He....ripped offa me arm. GM: He will pay me darling, where was the man? G: He was so strong.....so strong... GM: Who was the man? G: His....his....name is....Beowulf. GM: Beowulf....
This story is the whole reason that grendel311 is my profile name because Grendel was the monster everyone was scared of but I imagined him more freaky in the book
It doesn't exactly sound like Old English to me because there's some words that are said differnetly in Old English than in this. It sounds more like just kind of messed up English due to his deformities. When we first heard him talk he sounded like he was speaking it but in this scene it sounds more modern. Then again it could probably be because I'm so used to speaking today's English effected by Latin. They probably wanted you to feel for him more so he spoke it differently.
@sexycasey1 Its because he was suffering from the noise created by the party, it was basicly hurting his ears, which is why they wer attacked in the first place
The thing that most freaked me out, was when you saw it in the cave dead a big head and a little boney body , I just wanted to reach through the screen & stomp on it.
His forehead looks like fine smoked ham...

Poor Grendel.
4thtroika 1 year ago
@4thtroika
poor grendel? he was the one who started the problem. beowulf just finished it and kicked his ass, without killing him. grendel killed i don't know how many people. that's good for him. he got his just deserts. then wanna wine when he gets whooped? screw that! go beowulf, fuck grendel, he died like a punk and cry to his mommy. what a pussy
lilprincekilla 1 year ago
@lilprincekilla Yeah, well - you try gettting some peace and quiet when a bunch of drunken yo-hos won't keep it down.
4thtroika 1 year ago
@4thtroika
true, there's no cops or anything. but still, they were just having a good time. grendel couldv'e asked them to quiet down. he speaks. but no, he wanna come and smash everything and everybody. so beowulf had to put em in his place
lilprincekilla 1 year ago
@4thtroika I'm with you on this one- God knows how many times I wish I could've ripped the arms off noisy, drunken neighbours. Besides it was Grendel's Daddy's fault- this is what happens when fathers neglect their kids.

i love the part where she sings to the deceased grendel and cries as she fies to avenge her son's death...it kinda shows the complexity of demons...

Yeah, that's not Old English; I understood it perfectly. It's just an accent.

i find it humorous that the first kings son is some giant mutant, and yet the second kings son (beowulfs son) is some godlike dragon being.

This story is the whole reason that grendel311 is my profile name because Grendel was the monster everyone was scared of but I imagined him more freaky in the book
grendel311 1 year ago
I wish this could be extended further, I wanted to hear her scream after her son dies, because that was very chilling.

They probably wanted you to feel for him more so he spoke it differently.

i felt really sorry for grendel :( ..and why does he cry and stuff when he attacks
reply asap need it for course work :) thnks
sexycasey1 1 year ago 2
@sexycasey1 Its because he was suffering from the noise created by the party, it was basicly hurting his ears, which is why they wer attacked in the first place

I hated that thing I kept playing the fight seen over & over again
just to watch it get killed, that thing was weird looking they did a good job on it
making it freaky looking. I wanted to take a sledge hammer & pound that fucking thing into a big pile of meat.
readynow12345 1 year ago
The thing that most freaked me out, was when you saw it in the cave dead a big head and a little boney body , I just wanted to reach through the screen & stomp on it.
