have you heard of contemporary smooth jazz, i heard stuff like this all the time on the various stations such as the Oasis( jazz channel in TX) or Watercolors on XM radio..they explore different sounds, and ideas when it comes to the jazz. frontier, Doesn't have to be the typical ostinato bro.

If you're referring to the melody line... its a fretless bass... maybe some compression and a pre-amp with lots of mids... hope you get the sound you're looking for.

thats a kickdrum mic, i think yamaha makes it - i used one recording and it really brings out that low thump, if needed

Probably not since he's got his kit setup as right handed. You're probably wondering about the left hand playing ride and hi-hat. It's called "open handed", and a lot of great drummers use it. Take a look at Carter Beauford! :)
