  • Broke my scaphoid four weeks ago in a motorcycle crash, i've just finished my trade as a plumber and my surgeon says i will be in so much pain from arthritis i will need a bone fusion in 5 to ten years, i think i discolated 5 of the other bones in my wrist. Some wires and screws were put in, is it worth seeing another surgeon? (i live in Australia and had no choice of specialsit as it was an emergenct) as my job is my lively hood.

  • Had a breakage for almost a year now(through rugby injury), doctor said its knitted back well, but ive been smoking throughout the recovery time and i still get stiffness and pain when i press down on the wrist (such as the press up position) ive decided to give up now but is it too little too late...how much worse has this made it? :(

  • @jongsin We definitely urge smokers to stop while recovering from injuries, but it's impossible to say exactly how it's affected your situation. The important thing is that you've decided now! That's wonderful. Tell your doctor about the discomfort you're still feeling, and be honest about the fact that you were still smoking while recovering. Your doctor can adjust your physical therapy, if needed, and direct you to quit-smoking resources in your area. Good luck, and congratulations!

  • @jongsin i broke mine in rugby as well. I had the surgery over 3 months ago and it still shows no signs of a union. I might end up getting a second surgery to apply a bone graft. how long did it take you?

  • @foozbal891 ive had it for pretty much a year, doctor said its knitted back together perfectly but the time for the b one to fuse fully still hasnt happened, probably because i smoke (idiot i know) id say if its giving you loads of discomfort after another month go back to the doctors....

  • I had a bone graft and a screw put in about 3yrs ago. The break never healed. My doctor did not want to do surgery again, so I saw another one. He is willing to do surgery, but only feels 50% confident that he could "fix" my wrist. He wants to start with "removing the screw..then we'll see how you feel" Should I give up on ever having a normal wrist again? I fear less mobility if I do attempt surgery again, and I also fear arthritis if I dont...anyone have any advice?

  • @sinatrafan1987 Be careful taking medical advice from anyone who has not personally examined your wrist, Sinatrafan. Every situation is so different from the others. If you trust your doctor but aren't happy with the odds, discuss your concerns with him. The more you communicate, the more comfortable you're likely to feel with him -- or the more clearly you'll see that you need another opinion.

  • Thank u! I appreciate the advice

  • @MrOurkid We recommend that you see your doctor soon to locate the cause of your pain. He or she may recommend seeing a specialist to investigate it further. Best of luck, and we hope you find some relief soon.

  • I received my surgery on November 4th 2011. I still have my cast on. How long should I have it on, cause most people have it off sooner. I can fully move my fingers, have no pain either.

  • @TheMoviesforall That's a question you should ask your doctor directly. Every case is different -- we don't know the particulars of your situation and haven't examined you in person. There may be a specific reason your doctor wanted you to be in a cast for this length of time. Good luck!

  • @TheMoviesforall I was in the cast for close to 4 wks before surgery, then had surgery, went like 2 weeks more then went to moulded plastic cast.

  • @TheMoviesforall lets say this, i had the sugury march (late) in 2010, then by start of may i was in the plastic 1.

  • There is craking or a popping noise in my wrist. No swelling. No fracture and no pain is it posible that i fractured it a long time ago. I have never broken or fractured a bone though. I really like to do handstands is it because all my weight is on my hands though it is only one hand please comment back soon.

  • @2123Americangirl We really can't say what might be the cause of the noise in your wrist - you'd need to be seen by your doctor, who can examine it in person.

  • and my doctor. Mr. Sudhir warrior. India's best hand surgeon. I was lucky that he took my case.

  • my doctors told me to go for a surgery. it was a huge risk coz they told me that the success rate in these kinda cases are only 40%. and told me that if its not successful they'll diffuse all the wrist bones in the second surgery , which sounds scary. Today its been over an year after my surgery. It was a success. It was a miracle for me. there is a screw in my wrist and my doctor used bone graft coz my scaphoid bone had become small during these years. i was really lucky.

  • Hey.. my scaphoid surgery was a typical one.i didn't knew about the fracture. My doctor did not tell me to take an X-ray again when it was normal on the next day of my accident. I neglected the pain and considered it as a sprain. You'll be surprised to know that i went again for an X-ray after 6 years of that incident coz i was tired of this sprain and little bit of pain. the bone was half gone due to the friction during these 6 years. Luckily blood supply was still there..

  • Its been 3 yrs since my surgery..Hopefully, If I ever get another one it will be as successful as yours..

  • From experience, how often do patients fully recover after scaphoid surgery? I fractured mine and am having terrible pain, was wondering if surgery is generally successful?

  • @carltonblue09 It completely depends on your own situation. If you haven't already, we recommend that you ask your specialist about your likely prognosis after surgery. Good luck to you!

  • I have a displaced scaphoid fracture on my right hand and it passed 6 weeks in a cast above and below of the elbow without any screw put in. I will get the surgery with a bone graph after another month, why is it take so long till the surgery and what chances i have that the scaphoid will heal after 10 weeks with the blood supply cut. I am desperate, please if anybody has any idea, please let me know.

  • @dyablohunter Have you asked your doctor this question? Don't hesitate to get a second opinion if you feel it would be a good idea. Unfortunately, we can't give you an opinion on your recovery without examining you first. Good luck, and keep in touch with your doctor when you have questions!

  • Is it true old scaphoid injury have less percentage chance of healing? I'm very nervous. I injured my scaphoid in 2009 didn't get surgery done until recently.

  • @maityme84 That's a question for your doctor. All cases are unique and we can't speak with authority about yours without examining you first. Good luck, and we hope you stay well!

  • @maityme84 I went about a year with a non union scaphoid... Even collasping the other bones around it.. Now 5 months after surgery, I can bench press my weight again, and pushups aren't agonizing... Don't fret about it healing, I'm sure it'll be fine.

  • Ok so my wrist makes a cracking noise and hurts only sometime. I got an X-ray and maybe a week later there was nothing. What do I do if it still is the same

  • @2123Americangirl Don't hesitate to go back to your doctor if it's still bothering you. He or she can help you determine what to do next. Good luck!

  • @dartmouthhitchcock First of all, the video is great! I had this procedure done 9 days ago on my right wrist. I get my stitch out tomorrow. Is it normal to lose some of your range of motion? Can this loss be permanent? The doctor told me no pushups for 6 weeks but looking at the post I will have a much longer recovery. Are there any exercises I can do to gain the strength in my right wrist?

  • @dem44 That's a great question for your doctor and physical therapist. They'll know the safest, most effective way for you to recover from surgery, given the particulars of your case. We can't guess from here without examining you. Best of luck in your recovery!

  • @DartmouthHitchcock So I am still unable to do pushups and my doctor told me that the screw he used was too long. He has suggested that we take the screw out. I am wondering if taking the screw out will make my scaphoid more susceptible to being broke again. I am an avid mountain biker and see falling in my near future.

  • @dem44 Again, that's a question for your doctor - without knowing the details of your procedure or seeing your wrist, it wouldn't be responsible of me to hazard a guess. If you feel a second opinion would be the wise thing to do, by all means ask your primary care provider to refer you to another specialist. And I hope there won't be any falls in your future, near or otherwise! :)

  • easy to understand, and, great elaboration~

     thanks for posting this

  • how come you say scaphoid like "skay-foid" and the orthopedist at my hospital says it like ska-foid? can it be both?

  • @medfundhelp I say skay-foid, you say ska-foid... It often comes down to how we were taught, but we're talking about the same thing. It comes from the Greek word for boat, "skaphe," due to its shape. Thanks for asking!

  • I fell on concrete on my wrist on Monday evening and tuesday after school went up the hospital to see wat was wrong. There was no swelling or bruising but a lot of pain. I had 5 x-rays that came up clear but was told it could be scaphoid so I'm in a half cast for 10 days. Do u think it's broken or not with their being no swelling?

  • @98DreamGirl98 There's really no way to say without seeing you in person. If you want a second opinion, see your primary care provider or ask for a referral to a specialist. You can call Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Hand Clinic at (603) 650-HAND for the name of a specialist in your area. I hope your wrist feels better soon!

  • I was hit by a car while riding my motorcycle. The Scaphoid was broken in half. My doctor told me it was a sprain. It was a fracture with avascular necrosis. I got a hip bone graft. Had three pins put in. Wore a cast for 13 months. Now I can't bend my wrist for more than a few degrees. My heath insurance have expired. So I have not had any physio, and I wonder if I will ever get my flexibility back without it?

  • @1Hydrobud That's a question that can really only be answered by a physician who has seen you in person. Ask your provider about financial assistance for those without health insurance, or look for a low-cost clinic in your region. We wish you the very best and hope your situation improves soon.

  • i broke my scaphoid 3 yrs ago, the fist surgery i got a screw put in. 1yr went by and their was still pain in moving, plus lack of mobility and reduced strength. 2nd surgery i got a new screw and a bone graph. once again it didnt heal. if anybody has any advice id really appreciate it. thx

  • @tigoldbitties1 I'd encourage you to get a second opinion from another specialist if you don't feel your previous care has worked for you. You can call our Hand Clinic at (603) 650-HAND for the name of a specialist where you live. Good luck!

  • i have just had a bone graft on my scaphoid from my pelvis, more than 2 years after the injury as the hospital lost my mri and never chased it up for me leaving the bone to die as blood flow was weak, hurt for a few days and now been in plaster 3 weeks had stitches out now got a new plaster for 5 weeks :(

  • fractured it on sunday playing rugby, thought it was painful, had to keep on playing for another 70 minutes...bastards...hope it heals in the cast properly.

  • Hi, Almost 3 weeks ago, i fell on my wrist when i was doing a handstand. i went to hospital and they said it wasnt broken. it was very swollen after the injury. the doctor gave me a wrist splint to wear and 2 weeks after i went to see the doctor again. i was still having severe pain so she sent me for a bone scan to see if it was broken. im off for the results next week. my thumb is still swollen and i still have bad pain. Could it be broken?

  • @purplelightning882 It's hard to say without seeing it in person, but that's definitely something you want to be asking your doctor. If you don't feel your provider can give you the care you need, you have every right to a second opinion. See if you can be referred to a specialist if you haven't already seen one. If you'd like to find a specialist in your area, you can call us at (603) 650-HAND. We hope you'll be doing flips again in no time!

  • Fracured my scaphoid a week ago but the doctor was unsure about whether it was fractured or not until today.

In a cast for six weeks (what an annoyance!).

  • hey,

i hurt my wrist during my sleep at a venture camp and i felt like it was sprained... and it really kills. i am wearing a bandage to scool but it really hurts when i turn my wrist,

is this like a scaphoid fracture or a wrist sprain or a frature?? no idea... pls help

    thx mr fantabulous life.

  • Hi,

I fractured my scaphoid on the 27th of Nov, got a cast on the 8th of dec. Took the cast off on the 21st of january, and today (March 2nd) I still feel pain. It's gotten better from when i initially took the cast off but it still hurts when i bend my wrist. From your experience how long do scaphoid injuries usually take to heal? Is something wrong if it's still not 100% healed after 3 months?

    Thanks

  • @ichigo0110 Hey I broke the scaphoid bone in my left hand 4 months ago and I still feel pain when I try to bend my wrist so dont worry :) My doctor told me that it could take up to 6 months untill it is healed properly and by then the pain should be gone. I hope it all works out for you. :)

  • i cant move my thumb and can twitch my fingers and my wrist is stuck at an angle. the doc at the clinic said there was a bump or somthin on my scraphoid hes getting a radiologist to look at the xrays idk what 2 do

  • Hi, 3 weeks ago I fell and hurt my left wrist and when I went to the hospital I was told it wasnt broke, 2 days later I went back for more xrays and I was told I had a small fracture in my scaphoid bone and I got a cast put on for 2 weeks. I just got the cast off 3 days ago and now I can't bend my wrist at all! and I can't lift up my thumb. I also write with my left hand and I tried writing with it but I can hold the pen for long. What do you think I should do? Im starting to get very worried :(

  • @08MizzD See your doctor for a followup exam, and let him or her know about everything you're experiencing. We can't recommend much beyond that without seeing your wrist in person, but we're sorry to hear you haven't had some improvement! If you would like to see one of our specialists, or possibly get a referral for one in your area, please call us at (603) 650-HAND. Good luck!

  • @08MizzD ahhh fuck...same im left handed and broke it on sunday, hope this doesnt happen to me :( hows your hand now???

  • @jongsin Hey!

Aw really? sorry to hear about that.

My hand is slowly making progress, it took a while to bend it again Im still not really able to bend it back but Im able to move my thumb and do most of the stuff I could do before I broke it :)

I do physio on it once every 2 weeks. My doc told me that it could take up to 6 months before it will be back to normal as it still feels very bruised and I broke it 4 months ago.

  • @08MizzD thanks for info :)

  • hell0 i fell 0n my wrist last week and its still hurting, i can still m0ve my fingers and thumb but i stll have pain when i grip things.i can als0 m0ve my wrist side t0 side and all that but with a little pain.c0uld it be fractured. thank y0u.

  • @thath0ne1313 There's no way to tell without a proper examination, but do see your doctor as soon as possible. He or she can tell you whether you need to see a specialist. We hope you find some relief soon!

  • I'm an Orthopaedic Technologist..

  • took the first xray to spot my fracture but it was faint!

  • i broke mine about 32 years ago, i had a cast on it 3 different times, i have what is called an advanced collapsed wrist, i was told i need a wrist replacement i don't know how much it will cost but i know i can't afford it, can you let me know about how it will cost? fyrbie123

  • @fyrbie123 Hello - We asked Dr. Warhold about your situation. Without seeing you in person, of course, it's hard to suggest the right course of action. We don't do wrist replacements at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, but Dr. Warhold would be happy to see you for a consultation and either refer you to a provider who does, or suggest an alternative course of treatment if a replacement is not right for you. Call us at (603) 650-HAND to learn more. Thanks, and good luck!

  • @DartmouthHitchcock i live in Seattle, Wa. do you have any body here you can recommend me to go and see for my situation? fyrbie123

  • left distal poleof scaphoid replacement, how long will it be before i can work. i am a roofer

  • @kopynd We really can't estimate how long your recovery might be without seeing you in person, but we encourage you to see your primary care physician or a hand specialist, who can give you a much better idea than we can online. You can visit us on the web or call us at (603) 650-HAND if you'd like to schedule an appointment. Good luck, and we hope you recover quickly!

  • broke my scaphoid about ten years ago, went to hospital and was told it was a sprain, come back in six weeks if still sore, did that, was told it was just a sprain again(no xray was done)suffered for one and a half years, went back to hospital and got an xray and was told it was fractured and had to go on a waiting list for another year and a half, got a bit of bone out of my hip grafted into my wrist with a screw, did not work, went on waiting list again ,same operation, did not work,A LOT MORE NO CHARA

  • Have they done anything since u posted this a yr ago? 3yrs since my first unsuccessful surgery..My doctors dont seem too confident in healing it completely..

  • thanq for the video Sir....

i broke my lt. scaphoid on 1.1.10

had slab for 3weeks.later below elbow POP with thumb spica for another 6weeks.

8week xray showed no # line and no avascular necrosis.so i removed cast.had no physiotherapy.

i still have some tenderness in my snuffbox.last week i had CT of carpal bones.

ct report was "SCLEROSIS NOTED BUT NO DISTICT FRACTURE LINE SEEN"...

    SCLEROSIS means nonunion?? i dont know what to do !! please advise something.thank you sir {FROM INDIA}

  • Thank you for writing, and we're sorry to hear that you are still suffering from your fracture. We really can't offer medical advice without doing a thorough examination first; every medical situation is unique, of course. We do encourage you to contact your primary care provider or an orthopaedic specialist for a second opinion and to answer your questions in person.

  • get ready for a long time in the thumb spica cast- i had one on for 6 months- this kind of fracture sucks

  • i jus got screw and a bone graft on scaphoid due to fracture when i flipped a go cart, waiting to get cast on. it sucks but it hopefully will get better

  • ive had my cast on for 5 weeks now, and im due to go to hospital on the 13th for my cast removing and xrayed again

  • Thankyou for putting this video on here, I have unfortunatly fractured both in each wrist, I went to A and E and was put in casts both arms from my thumb to below the elbow, And was told to go back in 6 weeks to check the progress, I am self employed and have a manuel job which requires both my hands for the job and dont have sick pay so am really hoping i recover soon.

  • this is so awesome...i went to my doctors twice..and all he queried was a sprain..thus he didn't think to suggest an xray..6 weeks later i went back because i was still in pain and got an xray to find that my scaphoid is fractured..because its been so long before it was properly diagnosed i might have to have mine surgically fixed instead of relying on a cast/plaster..i wish i saw this video first!!answered all my questions!!!

  • I'm still recovering from my surgery that I had in Nov '09. They decided to take the bone graft from my distal radius rather than the hip so they could just make one incision and I wouldn't have to worry about hip pain. I had my cast on for only 9 weeks and then started physical therapy. These things can take anywhere from 4-6 months and up to a year to fully heal just because of the lack of blood flow to the area. After the cast is off just be carefull and go through with your therapy

  • @Rohm87 i got same exact thing as you

  • im still waiting for an operation on mine they have to take bone from my hip to replace lost bone in my scaphoid i broke it over a year ago and still w8n...

  • @DartmouthHitchcock hi, i just rebroke my scaphoid!! i want to get that screw in there but my doctor says recovery time is much longer than u say, will be seeing a specialist again to see if that will make recovery faster, i build swimming pools and the season is just starting, was casted most of last summer and, hope to get back to work asap. any advise would be great, thanks Jazz oh the break is in the middle (waist)

  • Thank you for this video. I just broke my scaphoid and am scheduled to get a cast in a few days (once the swelling is reduced). I didn't know that there were other options to casting, so I'll be talking to my dr. about this. As a competitive cyclist, a cast for 6 weeks would be terrible. Thanks again.

  • i already have gone to primary care provider and already have a temporary soft cast put on for a week, but then will jhave a hard cast on for 4-6 weeks. I really want to get the titanium screw put on so i dont miss the rest of my season for hockey. Just wondering how much it cost and whether i should even get it due to the extent of my injury. Also, where are u guys located?

  • i just got my cast on today but i broke my scaphoid 7 months ago. i didnt think anything was broken but i guess i was wrong... im screwed

  • just found out yesterday that i have had a scaphoid fracture for the past three weeks and my doctor mentioned this type of surgery. i am a snowboarder and i would like to get to the mountain as soon as possible. does this mean i should get the surgery?

  • What is the minimm and the maximum time that it takes for a scafoid to be healed?I have my arm put in a cast for about a month and the doctor said to keep it untill 29th os December.I am very afraid of this fraction cause I know that this kind of fraction is dificult to be healed. Will I have to do any physiotherapies o something after the cast removal? Thanks in advance!
