For those who may question the gender of Carmen Miranda, a photo of Cesar Romero with her during a dance sequence from the 40's proves one thing. She was a woman.
To which Carmen said, "Definitely, not my best angle. But if I knew the photographer ever wanted a pose of me like that, I would've given him a much better one." Well, to me that proves she was even more than a regular woman. A good sports too... ;-)
Such a good taste you've got. It's never too late for anything if there's time for it. So, get started and let me know! Thanks for the post. Best wishes from Brazil.
I wan't born until 1958. Carmen was long gone by then. Now at 53 I get a kick out of her. I love her to death. That big playful smile and those mischievous eyes.tell me she was a hell of a lot of fun. On or off stage. I would've like to meet her in person.
Pure speculation on my part: "I Love Lucy" comes on the air in 1955, the year of CM's death. Desi Arnaz, a Cuban who was the uncredited part of DesiLu brand brings part of the Latin experience to the American audience and has credibility. Would it be just as likely that CM would have found an audience in early TV either in the US or just as well in Brazil and Portugal? She had far more fame than either LB or DA at that point in their careers. Who's to say that she would'nt have succeeded?
@DAngelo136 "I Love Lucy" came on the air in 1951. However, your observations are astute - you are probably correct that Carmen Miranda would have had an audience at that time as she was already well known to American viewers and quite popular.
@64tbird I realized that when I did my research on Lucille Ball that my dating was a bit off. She was still doing shows in Vegas and other TV shows, such as the Jimmy Durante show, which was her last appearance ultimately, and she was still a star in Brazil. Given the longevity of her sisters and brothers, she could have been active up until the '70's. Look at Celia Cruz, she was active almost until her death.
I simply must correct the insane notion that contemporary American audiences viewed Carmen as some sort of buffoon for the United Fruit Company or the butt of a racist joke. Far from it. The 1940's popular fashion trends of turbans, platform heels, and fruit jewelry were driven by American women who wanted to emulate the glamorous Miranda (much in the same way later generations would imitate another sexy comedic actress...Marilyn Monroe.)
@Dreadfullypenny I must also add that the fruit headgear was to imitate the fruit baskets worn by the women of the Bahia section of Brazil that was reflective of the Afro-Brazilian culture. This was huge due to the fact that Carmen was a Portuguese woman doing samba while identifying with Afro Brazilian culture. My hats off to her for that.
@Dreadfullypenny , Very correct indeed! ALso her costumes were a statement of racial harmony, a point that most here in the USA did'nt really understand or want to for that matter during that time. The costume she wore was that of the Afro-Brasilian women of Salvador/Bahia just a bit north of Rio. A mainly Afro-brasilian part of Brasil. She thought that these women were the backbone of Brasil in many ways and were not represented at all. She wore that out of respect and admiration for them!
@Dreadfullypenny ..cont..In so many respects she was a woman far ahead of her time in her understanding of our culture and society as well as hers and found a way to bridge the gap between the two. An artisic genius and one helleva' lady too. When she passed, the whole city of Rio and Bahia turned out for her Funeral, it was bigger than any head of state of her country. A true testimony to who and what she really was.
it's never racist when you're not on the receiving end.people still believe the world is flat and nothing will persuade them otherwise.. I'm telling you it's racist., but you will allways say it's cute.
@DoniSacramento Blackface and scat were also only entertainment.Doris Day's Mañana is good enough for me"was prolly the most racist song ever written.I'll write a song about Italian organ grinders and when you get pist i'll say you're bitter.
No doubt you're a war maker and looking for discord. Sorry for my having to get out. I am ready for peace only. I'm satisfied with this little and you won't make me change my mid. Sorry again. Good bye.
@amboyaereo It was Peggy Lee, but you're close. And it wasn't written to be racist, it was just written to make money. At the time, they were called 'novelty' songs. You can find them about every racial and ethnic group!
Have you ever heard Ivete Sangalo's version of this song? It is very nice! OK, not as nice as the original by Carmen, but that would be asking for too much...
Carmen's movies are like visual anti-depressants. It's impossible not to smile while watching her perform. While she's been much parodied, no one will ever close to matching her beauty, talent ,and breath-taking stage presence.
The editing was wonderful. Miranda had such lovely hand and arm movements. Her image has become so cliched, it is easy to overlook her enormous talent. If I had to compare her to anyone, it might be Picasso or Pavlova -- someone totally unique and instantly recognizable.
I hope you don't blame Carmen for this being hated by your friends. Or maybe they should also learn some of her songs to be happy. Happiness is all we need. :) :) :) Best wishes from Brazil.

What most people today, (younger people) don't realize is that back then, you had to be multi talented. No one specialized. Good example was James Cagney. He could play piano, tap dance, also sang, and yet he starred as a murdering gangster. Most stars today are very limited in their talent. Michael Douglas rode on the shirt tails of his father Kirk Douglas. Same with many of todays stars. Most don't impress me.
Something about her hand motions and her wildly bright eyes puts me in the mind of Annie Lennox (love her!!!)--another performer who often wears such over the top costumes.

Bom, hein?
DoniSacramento: I guess being an old man, my patience is short. I guess my comment was rather rude. No offense mean't to anyone. Forgive an old geezer. lol.
Your comment was not rude nor offensive at all. You junt vented out what you felt like doing. And if you say you're an old man, then you've got all the right in the world to say whatever you want. Life has given you that right. I really appreciated your comment and I ate my heart out for you saw Carmen in person. You are always welcome to me. Best wishes.
I saw Carmen in person when I was about 6yrs. old. lol. I'm from New Orleans, La. and she was in a parade just for her on Canal St. She was in a convertible and waving at everyone. I have seen just about all of her movies. To see any movie star in person was a thrill back then. Some people on here are comparing her to Lady Gaga! She couldn't be a pimple on Carmen's ass!!
Although young people don't have the whole ability to properly judge, it's nice to see them express their likes for Carmen -- this proves she was ahead of her time. Artists that time were also created as in a laboratory just like today, but they were either good or bad - no other options would go between. The great ones last eternally. Let's see how long Lady Gaga can stand. Thanks very much for your comment.
@buddybleau Agreed. Lady Gaga does not have nearly the amount of talent or genuine beauty that Carmen did. Plus Carmen Miranda never made nuns or any other religion look nasty while she performed.
@Bladepaw18 Carmen was a genuine lady. Period. Of course you realize, in those days, if she would have made fun of or defiled a nun in any way, she would have been hung out to dry! I am an old man (70) and that was the age of innocence. Remember?
@buddybleau Well, I've been raised on real entertainment, so I know what you mean. Plus back then there was a difference between, well a lot of things. I just with Joseph McCarthy was still alive. He would be having a field day! lol
@Bladepaw18 McCarthy? Man, would he ever be having a field day. I'm LMAO! I guess it's all in the timing. At least today, it would be true. He'd have a field day just with the Czars that Obummer has. They all belong in jail including that asshole Obummer!
@Taharah007 That was a long time ago. When America was a proud country. And it's citizens were free! Thank you for your recognition. Have a wonderful life.
@kwacou I'm sorry. I should make it a point not to forget. You are so right. And true, I was looking at it from the point of view of a white person. That was very inconsiderate. Blacks have been thru enough misery. Please accept my apology. No offense was mean't. Forgive an old man.
@buddybleau They are clearly different talents and styles, however for both of their times, they have similar courage to be bold and audacious and unapologeticly creative. I would never put down any artist with those traits.
@nsurg895 Around 1946 I think. But I will never forget it. We had to get all dressed up. Anyone who went to Canal Street in New Orleans in those days, got all dressed up.
She was manic depressive. That is the opposite of all that energy onscreen. They tried to deal with her depression with - yes - drugs - but more than that even electro-shock therapy. That shows how desperate she was to end those horrible down moods. Eventually, they say, her heart just gave out from all of that.
why do you find it necessary to berate her talent? she may have been over the top, as most musicals were, but i dont feel she was ever "camp". being campy insinuates your making fun of or overtly parodying the material. i dont think she ever did. she presented it in true style. the "camp" community has a strange way of giving praise by accepting talent only if they can mock it. give her credit as a talent and not as a drag show icon.
The origional lady gaga, that is outlandish outfits, but Carman kept all her stuff in theme and had class, that and a huge cocain addiction, she would hide it in the huge platform shoes.
Lady Gaga aka Stephani Gemmnati is good on the piano if you see her stuff from before she was a pop star, she can sing, but I wish she would tone down the nonsense fashion its ok to stand out but to look ugly doing it is another thing and clean up the filthy langage. Then we will talk
What does the Lady Gaga stuff have to do with Carmen Miranda? "Huge cocain addiction"? "She would hide it in the the huge platform shoes"? Where did you get all that ridiculous & nonsense info from? Don't even bother to try to answer. You won't have reliable informers anyway. Let's get ourselves busy into things real worth getting.
On AMC they made such claims, as for lady gaga, I just ment both of them wore outlandish costumes, though Carman had a more realistic theme and had more class then Lady Gaga ever will.
No one should believe everything is said or claimed. Also, it's not nice neither respectful to the deceased person/artist to spread out unbased information. For decades I've been in touch with people who were from acquaintances to relatives of Carmen's, and they all assure she never did drugs. Even if she did, they say they would tell as her life was her business - no one else's. So, please be careful on your judgement and statements.
They are a classic movie channel and told behind the scenes stuff, I later read on a fan site about her, that the crack rumor is untrue but she did have trouble with drinking and perscription drugs over the course of her life after she met her one husband. That is what was mentioned there.
I agree completely! I wear flowers in my hair at any time they're handy, for the very same purpose that the fruit-laden hats served. They are colorful and make people smile, which is exactly what Carmen Miranda did.
Such color, smiles and music she brought with her to this world (and not just with what she was wearing on her head LOL)! :>
@DoniSacramento Im sure others have faced the problem but haven't said anything. I've viewed it before, but this is the only time I've had an issue. I love the video but it's frustrating when it' just keeps loading and nothing happens. Seems to be ok now thought.
My brother sent this to me as we were just talking about her a few days ago. We were saying how wonderful Carmen was. We're music lovers of many styles. I was extremely delighted to "see" her again! She looks as though she did not take herself too seriously and had a great time, all the while effortlessly exploding with natural talent! They broke the mold when she was born! Thanks for posting!
Wow! What this world needs more than anything right now is another Carmen Miranda to lift our spirits. God bless her - it's impossible not to smile when watching her.
That's the idea. Carmen's mission was to lavishly spread out joy and happiness to everyone she could reach. You're absolutely right - we all need our spirits lifted. We do not need another Carmen Miranda for that, though - she successfully carries on with her mission through all the songs, pictures and movies she's left us. They all still work out. My thanks for your comments with my best wishes from Brazil.
Don't get me wrong mate. Carmen Miranda was a Brazilian singer, she took the brazilian culture to the whole world and if she became the women we all know is due to the fact that she always lived in brazil. I was just saying that she was born in Portugal and that she remained Portuguese until the last day of her life, wich means she never tried to hide who she was and never forget her roots
That may be true, but she maintained until the very last day of her life her Portuguese nationality and never became officially Brasilian. That surely has some weight since it was her own decision to always remain Portuguese
No argument is stronger than the importance of a piece of paper stating where someone was born. I wouldn't dare to show any one against things like "may be true" and "some weight". You win.
For those who may question the gender of Carmen Miranda, a photo of Cesar Romero with her during a dance sequence from the 40's proves one thing. She was a woman.

Bom, hein?
DoniSacramento 1 year ago
Bom, hein?

DoniSacramento: I guess being an old man, my patience is short. I guess my comment was rather rude. No offense mean't to anyone. Forgive an old geezer. lol.
buddybleau 1 year ago
Your comment was not rude nor offensive at all. You junt vented out what you felt like doing. And if you say you're an old man, then you've got all the right in the world to say whatever you want. Life has given you that right. I really appreciated your comment and I ate my heart out for you saw Carmen in person. You are always welcome to me. Best wishes.
DoniSacramento 1 year ago 2
I saw Carmen in person when I was about 6yrs. old. lol. I'm from New Orleans, La. and she was in a parade just for her on Canal St. She was in a convertible and waving at everyone. I have seen just about all of her movies. To see any movie star in person was a thrill back then. Some people on here are comparing her to Lady Gaga! She couldn't be a pimple on Carmen's ass!!
buddybleau 1 year ago 20
Although young people don't have the whole ability to properly judge, it's nice to see them express their likes for Carmen -- this proves she was ahead of her time. Artists that time were also created as in a laboratory just like today, but they were either good or bad - no other options would go between. The great ones last eternally. Let's see how long Lady Gaga can stand. Thanks very much for your comment.
DoniSacramento 1 year ago 2
@DoniSacramento HOW TRUE!
TONCSI2 1 year ago
@buddybleau Agreed. Lady Gaga does not have nearly the amount of talent or genuine beauty that Carmen did. Plus Carmen Miranda never made nuns or any other religion look nasty while she performed.
Bladepaw18 1 year ago
@Bladepaw18 Carmen was a genuine lady. Period. Of course you realize, in those days, if she would have made fun of or defiled a nun in any way, she would have been hung out to dry! I am an old man (70) and that was the age of innocence. Remember?
buddybleau 1 year ago
@buddybleau Well, I've been raised on real entertainment, so I know what you mean. Plus back then there was a difference between, well a lot of things. I just with Joseph McCarthy was still alive. He would be having a field day! lol
Bladepaw18 1 year ago
@Bladepaw18 McCarthy? Man, would he ever be having a field day. I'm LMAO! I guess it's all in the timing. At least today, it would be true. He'd have a field day just with the Czars that Obummer has. They all belong in jail including that asshole Obummer!

@kwacou I'm sorry. I should make it a point not to forget. You are so right. And true, I was looking at it from the point of view of a white person. That was very inconsiderate. Blacks have been thru enough misery. Please accept my apology. No offense was mean't. Forgive an old man.
buddybleau 5 months ago

Eventually, they say, her heart just gave out from all of that.
nycruise 1 year ago
why do you find it necessary to berate her talent? she may have been over the top, as most musicals were, but i dont feel she was ever "camp". being campy insinuates your making fun of or overtly parodying the material. i dont think she ever did. she presented it in true style. the "camp" community has a strange way of giving praise by accepting talent only if they can mock it. give her credit as a talent and not as a drag show icon.
sickkat44 1 year ago
Ah a true lady of camp. She was great! I really wish Carmen would of gotten a film of her own. It would of been fabulous!!!

Then we will talk
manga12 1 year ago
What does the Lady Gaga stuff have to do with Carmen Miranda? "Huge cocain addiction"? "She would hide it in the the huge platform shoes"? Where did you get all that ridiculous & nonsense info from? Don't even bother to try to answer. You won't have reliable informers anyway. Let's get ourselves busy into things real worth getting.
DoniSacramento 1 year ago
On AMC they made such claims, as for lady gaga, I just ment both of them wore outlandish costumes, though Carman had a more realistic theme and had more class then Lady Gaga ever will.
manga12 1 year ago 2
No one should believe everything is said or claimed. Also, it's not nice neither respectful to the deceased person/artist to spread out unbased information. For decades I've been in touch with people who were from acquaintances to relatives of Carmen's, and they all assure she never did drugs. Even if she did, they say they would tell as her life was her business - no one else's. So, please be careful on your judgement and statements.
DoniSacramento 1 year ago
They are a classic movie channel and told behind the scenes stuff, I later read on a fan site about her, that the crack rumor is untrue but she did have trouble with drinking and perscription drugs over the course of her life after she met her one husband. That is what was mentioned there.

Dear Gravida,
I agree completely!

By the way, not comparing music styles just looks, does anyone else think that Annie Lenox and Carmen Miranda look similar?
bpotter2 2 years ago
You know something? I really think Annie has got a look somewhat like Carmen's. Glad to know you've also noticed that.
DoniSacramento 2 years ago
My brother sent this to me as we were just talking about her a few days ago. We were saying how wonderful Carmen was. We're music lovers of many styles. I was extremely delighted to "see" her again! She looks as though she did not take herself too seriously and had a great time, all the while effortlessly exploding with natural talent! They broke the mold when she was born! Thanks for posting!
bpotter2 2 years ago
Wow! What this world needs more than anything right now is another Carmen Miranda to lift our spirits. God bless her - it's impossible not to smile when watching her.
wjsibley 2 years ago 3
That's the idea. Carmen's mission was to lavishly spread out joy and happiness to everyone she could reach. You're absolutely right - we all need our spirits lifted. We do not need another Carmen Miranda for that, though - she successfully carries on with her mission through all the songs, pictures and movies she's left us. They all still work out. My thanks for your comments with my best wishes from Brazil.

They speak portuguese in Brazil, but Portugal is in EUROPE.
mialuz7 2 years ago
PORTUGAL IS BRAZIL.
guilhermedeorange 2 years ago
Don't get me wrong mate. Carmen Miranda was a Brazilian singer, she took the brazilian culture to the whole world and if she became the women we all know is due to the fact that she always lived in brazil. I was just saying that she was born in Portugal and that she remained Portuguese until the last day of her life, wich means she never tried to hide who she was and never forget her roots
tryklon1 2 years ago
That may be true, but she maintained until the very last day of her life her Portuguese nationality and never became officially Brasilian. That surely has some weight since it was her own decision to always remain Portuguese
tryklon1 2 years ago
No argument is stronger than the importance of a piece of paper stating where someone was born. I wouldn't dare to show any one against things like "may be true" and "some weight". You win.
