  • 0:52 That's a priceless look! Yes I can't believe it either that a man could have such a wide vocal range either, amazing!! -daz in oz

  • my folks listend to his songs on "KOMA" on long trips. I always thought gitars but he referrs to the bass voice.

  • Great !

  • I think that's my favorite video...

  • "This footage was shot just days before Johnny died."

    Kind creepy.... O.o

  • Kill me now

  • I hated Boy Scouts. My father forced me to join the troop. Hated all the stupid ceremonies around the flag before dinner in full dress uniform. Too militaristic for my blood. All present and accounted for . . . Sir! Used to sing this all the time while doing the required over night hike at Resica Falls. Great song. Even more fun to sing.

  • Respond to this video...my dad beat him up back in cleveland, cause he was being mean to a girl

  • Thanks a lot for this tune! Very kind, warm and cool at the same time.

  • the "bassman" was Ronnie Bright of the Valentines & Cadillacs...Cymbal, however was very active in the industry...composer, producer, singer, etc...known by many other names, i.e.,Derek (his brother)

  • Always loved this song! Very nice to see he had a big singing range. Sad he died so young.

  • Would have been good if he had lived longer but he wasn't really young.

  • Looks a tad more like Elton John than Roy Orbison.

  • Who sang the bass part on the original recording?

  • it was Ronnie Bright who sing the bass original in 1963 when this song was recorded.

  • Looks a tad like Roy Orbison... great dynamic range. thanx for the post

  • This is a great song! I was dancing with my brother on this song. Rock `n Rolling, off course

  • omg i got a rock n roll cd's set from my da for cleanin the back once and i think he meant this as a joke...i haven't loved a cd more than that one set... im 15 now and i still here my 18yr old brother going around singing to this song..timeless classic

  • I lov this song :D

  • Check out Scooter and Sgt Floyd Pepper singing this on the Muppet Show!

  • THIS ONE IS THE BEST!

  • JC was such a great songwriter. New CDs of songs he wrote in the 70s/80s came out, called "Some Songs I Left Behind (Volume 1 and 2)" is out - check iTunes for it - he wrote GREAT songs.

  • @lowlights thanks this guy is my uncle ;) for real

  • I have loved this song for years!Ididn't realize he died right after making this video.I used to call our oldies radio station to play it and even had my kids loving it.They still remember it today.

  • I don't know why but this song popped in my head a few minutes before posting. I looked it up and wham the guy died. I bought the record in the early 60's but didn't remember who did it. He sure looked healthy in the vid. Thanks for uploading lowlights. GRADE A

  • 天才だな・・・

  • like scatman john a lil bit

  • Just seeing this i thought how the years have been so kind to him, then a few days later? Compare to the super-pensioners rock group The Stones, Who must have chucked up their nostrils most of Columbias output of coke, and are still around!

  • Remarkable video, especially considering that Johnny died only five days later of a heart attack. His original "Mr. Bass Man" reached #16 nationally in the spring of 1963 and was actually a duet between Johnny Cymbal and the uncredited Ronnie Bright, who was the bass vocalist with The Valentines. Johnny is also remembered for what became his all-time biggest hit, "Cinnamon," which he released under the name "Derek" in October 1968. It soared to #11 just as the year crossed over into 1969.

  • why did he dye?

  • He got a heartattack in his sleep. This he plays 11 March. He died 16 March, the same year.

  • a sad loss, this guy was before my time, but a timeless piece

  • Historical song , historical talent. 5 Stars*****

  • Boppers cover of this song is so much better!

  • at 0:20 he messes up on da piano, but idc

    cuz da song still ROX!!

    ♥ kasey ♥

  • this one is great...

  • AMAZING !!!! What an amazing talent. One of the very best. Always way ahead of his time.

  • that kid is so cute!

  • Yeah, let's show footage of a kid sneezing! Great song.

  • Great!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks, thats an interesting video. I thought his songs "Always, Always" and "Sacred Lovers Vow" were pretty good along with "Teenage Heaven. He was talented. "I'm Drinking Canada Dry" was a pretty good effort at Country Music. Boy, in that video he sure didn't look like a guy that was going to die.

    barrygio1

  • ah so good mr. johnnny...let s dance again Im tryin

  • Yeah. These guys tend to get a ton of $ and the vices that go w/ it an early age-remember he said Mr Bassman was in '63 when he was really young--so there ya be. Prematurely aged. And I'm rambling. Anyways-I like this footage, kinda rare.

  • Somebody know a score for piano this song.

  • C, Am, F, and G are the verse chords

    Bridge goes F, C, D, G

  • Awesome Video

  • have any of you heard the actual bass guitar version of this?

it's really cool. this guy was a one hit wonder surely!

  • Actually - Johnny Cymbal had a couple of charting hits - first at the age of 15 with "Mr. Bass Man" (which he wrote) and then later "Cinnamon" (recorded under the name "Derek" - his brother's name), then he wrote "I'm Drinking Canada Dry" which was a minor hit and he wrote "Mary in the Morning" which Elvis and Glen Campbell recorded.

  • nothing outstanding though, how big were those songs?

  • "Cinnamon", was quite a catchy song - very reminiscent of early Neil Diamond. It went Top-10 in the US, and was at least as popular as "Mr. Bassman".

  • he says he was 17 when he wrote Mr. Bass Man though, not 15

  • don't forget Teenage Heaven!

  • Johnny...you were great, what a super human being full of life and fun! Man, we miss you here in Nashville. The world lost a great talent.

  • A great song!

As far as I know Johnny Cymbal died 4 days after this show. Sad...

  • Maybe I am being ignorant, but I never knew of his death.

Could you tell me when and how he died.

  • The poor fellow died in, I believe, 1993. Just weeks after this footage was shot. I hate to say it - but I think it was alcoholism. A lot of talent, but it came with a lot of problems too, I guess.

  • @lowlights actualy it was a heartattack in his sleep :(

  • Thanks for the uploads, man. Greatly apprecianted.

  • Takes me back to the seventh grade. I LOVED that song.

    Rest in peace Johnny.

  • i remember that on the radio after i learned the words i tried to sing along

  • I've loved this song since I was a little girl. I first heard it on an oldies station. Thanks so much for posting this! R.I.P. Johnny Cymbal

  • What an amazing talent. One of the very best. Always way ahead of his time.

  • Johnny Cymbal should be remembered for more than just this one song although it it a wonderful song. R.I.P. Johnny you always will be Mr Bass Man! 1945-1993

  • AMAZING !!!! ROCK 'N ROLL !!!!

  • I'm looking for the original version of the hot, but this one is also a BLAST :P
