I hated Boy Scouts. My father forced me to join the troop. Hated all the stupid ceremonies around the flag before dinner in full dress uniform. Too militaristic for my blood. All present and accounted for . . . Sir! Used to sing this all the time while doing the required over night hike at Resica Falls. Great song. Even more fun to sing.
the "bassman" was Ronnie Bright of the Valentines & Cadillacs...Cymbal, however was very active in the industry...composer, producer, singer, etc...known by many other names, i.e.,Derek (his brother)
omg i got a rock n roll cd's set from my da for cleanin the back once and i think he meant this as a joke...i haven't loved a cd more than that one set... im 15 now and i still here my 18yr old brother going around singing to this song..timeless classic
JC was such a great songwriter. New CDs of songs he wrote in the 70s/80s came out, called "Some Songs I Left Behind (Volume 1 and 2)" is out - check iTunes for it - he wrote GREAT songs.
I have loved this song for years!Ididn't realize he died right after making this video.I used to call our oldies radio station to play it and even had my kids loving it.They still remember it today.
I don't know why but this song popped in my head a few minutes before posting. I looked it up and wham the guy died. I bought the record in the early 60's but didn't remember who did it. He sure looked healthy in the vid. Thanks for uploading lowlights. GRADE A
Just seeing this i thought how the years have been so kind to him, then a few days later? Compare to the super-pensioners rock group The Stones, Who must have chucked up their nostrils most of Columbias output of coke, and are still around!
Remarkable video, especially considering that Johnny died only five days later of a heart attack. His original "Mr. Bass Man" reached #16 nationally in the spring of 1963 and was actually a duet between Johnny Cymbal and the uncredited Ronnie Bright, who was the bass vocalist with The Valentines. Johnny is also remembered for what became his all-time biggest hit, "Cinnamon," which he released under the name "Derek" in October 1968. It soared to #11 just as the year crossed over into 1969.
Thanks, thats an interesting video. I thought his songs "Always, Always" and "Sacred Lovers Vow" were pretty good along with "Teenage Heaven. He was talented. "I'm Drinking Canada Dry" was a pretty good effort at Country Music. Boy, in that video he sure didn't look like a guy that was going to die.
Yeah. These guys tend to get a ton of $ and the vices that go w/ it an early age-remember he said Mr Bassman was in '63 when he was really young--so there ya be. Prematurely aged. And I'm rambling. Anyways-I like this footage, kinda rare.
Actually - Johnny Cymbal had a couple of charting hits - first at the age of 15 with "Mr. Bass Man" (which he wrote) and then later "Cinnamon" (recorded under the name "Derek" - his brother's name), then he wrote "I'm Drinking Canada Dry" which was a minor hit and he wrote "Mary in the Morning" which Elvis and Glen Campbell recorded.
The poor fellow died in, I believe, 1993. Just weeks after this footage was shot. I hate to say it - but I think it was alcoholism. A lot of talent, but it came with a lot of problems too, I guess.
Johnny Cymbal should be remembered for more than just this one song although it it a wonderful song. R.I.P. Johnny you always will be Mr Bass Man! 1945-1993
0:52 That's a priceless look! Yes I can't believe it either that a man could have such a wide vocal range either, amazing!! -daz in oz

Would have been good if he had lived longer but he wasn't really young.

nothing outstanding though, how big were those songs?

"Cinnamon", was quite a catchy song - very reminiscent of early Neil Diamond. It went Top-10 in the US, and was at least as popular as "Mr. Bassman".
