Why don't they show the cities DURING THE DAY so we can actually depict individual buildings? If they want cool night shots, then they can do one during the day, and one at night.
For all you people who think all of the buildings in New York are old maybe you should actually visit New York before you make such an ignorant statement. Jeez doesn't anyone have any sense of style or class anymore?. I'll take the beautiful art deco of the 1930s over some of the gaudy monstrosities they're building these days. Hey i have good idea lets slap a bunch of mirrors on the empire state building to give it a "modern" look. Get the fuck outa here! BTW Nome, Alaska should be #1.
Obviously the main point of the selections was the skyscrapers and not the skyline itself. I bet if some of you looked at the Athenian Acropolis area at night would think it's a lot nicer than the chaotic skyscrapers in most of those metropolises. For the video - NYC will always be the prettiest. It's just a classic.
Hong Kong is the best because there is a hill behind those skyscrapers, can't all of of you find that? It is unique in the world! You can't find the same view easily!
Chicago skyline before NY? are you blind? i would say NY#1 HK#2 ...HK skyline is purposely made to get the "wow" factor from people where as NY doesnt even "try" and is still looks better IMO!
I live in Seoul and I like it here but there is absolutely no way it deserves to be so high up the list. Tokyo and London are neck and neck, Seoul is quite far behind.
If you were to go purely on the density and vastness of skyscrapers, though, Hong Kong and NYC are a definite first and second.
@tomsega I haven't been to Tokyo, but I think Seoul's skyline compares favorably to London's. What part of London has a vastly better skyline than Seoul?
I expect Seoul's ranking will improve in the coming years, as several skyscrapers have been completed recently with others in construction. There are also plans to build six or so supertall skyscrapers, though who knows if they will ever see the light of day.
@fustiancorduroy "What part of London has a vastly better skyline than Seoul?"
The problem with Seoul is that there are almost no historic or stone buildings, far less even than in US cities. In London you see contemporary Skyscrapers with Medieval, Gothic and Victorian architecture in the same view. The two cities match eachother for skyscrapers right now, but there are some Supertalls set to be finished by 2012 in London that will be much grander than anything in Seoul.
@tomsega Seoul certainly lacks historic or stone buildings, which is lamentable, but that's the unfortunate result of the Korean War. But, at least by this website's ranking method, the presence of historical buildings, however wonderful they may be, does not matter as much as the skyscrapers themselves.
I'm curious about what supertall skyscrapers are under construction in London. I feel the city's business areas could use a couple iconic skyscrapers to make them more distinctive.
@tomsega I also want to point out that Seoul has the 279-meter International Finance Center and the 334-meter Parc 1 tower under construction next to each other on Yeouido. In addition, several other taller buildings have been proposed, namely the 555-meter Lotte World 123, the 640-meter Digital Media City Building, and the aptly named Dream Tower, which will stand 665 meters tall when (if?) it is completed, becoming the second tallest building in the world.
@fustiancorduroy - Indeed there's quite a few towers set for construction in Korea, but a number have been cancelled or set back 5 years! The one intended to be the second tallest in the world (which is about 30 miles from me now) looks like it'll be reduced significantly. As for London, search for Shard of Glass (will be the tallest building in Europe.. "only" 315m but cities like London and Paris struggle for planning permission), plus The Pinnacle. Both to be finished for the 2012 Olympics!
That tallest building in Hong Kong Island ruins the view. It is totally in disharmony with the rest of the island. The building itself is almost as high as the mountain in the background. And the mountain is what makes the view unique from all others. Go and search "Hong Kong wiki", and you will find the panoramic view of the full landscape. I hate that ugly building.
most of them are EYESORES..unlike..New York..Las Vegas Skylines..their neat and Clean..not full of APARTMENT BUILDINGS like brazil..hongkong...japan..damn eyesores..
This is a pretty fair listing. I am glad to see Toronto up there, and maybe NYC can move up once the new WTC buildings are done - they look like they'll be pretty nice!
I'm sorry, Tokyo & shenzhen should not be on the list, I've been to both and not very impressive skylines, Tokyo is so spread out nothing really looks cool and Shenzhen is not different from most cities in China, even it's close city Guangzhou has a far more impressive skyline....
to all people who say NY looks old: have been sleeping in the last ten years? NY has added dozens of 200m+ buildings in the last decade, from bank of america, new york times tower, time warner center, conde nast, barclay building, 7WTC etc etc. only blind people don't see NY's transformation.
all in all it is clear that NYC is heading away. the only real oppenent will be dubai with its massive construction. still, dubai has to add like 1000 highrises to make the skyline look dense. i forgot the girasole supertall tower, which will also be built (324m). the whole west side of midtown manhattan will experience a construction boom, so many towers already going up (like silver towers). i promise you all that NY will reshape itself this decade.
buildings over 200m: dubai-56, HK-54, NYC-53. there are currently 4(!) supertall towers U/C (=300m+) in NYC: 1,2,3 WTC and carnegie 57. HK has zero U/C. 200m+: beekman tower (a new milestone in the skyline), 4WTC, 440 west 42nd street. soon to be U/C (site already cleared): 99 church str,, 56 leonard str. the 15 penn tower (371m) nearby the empire state building was approved. next supertall to rise will be the magnificent tower verre (320m). in 2013 manhattan will look suberb.
@filipmath 1 WTC will help. Last I heard, both WTC 2 and 3 are on hold, to be completed only to street level.
The NYC skyline is large and dense, but not as attractive as Chicago's or Hong Kong's. And the new WTC won't correct the two major skyline flaws: the large gap between the Lower Manhattan and Midtown clusters, and the dense plateau of 600 - 800 footers that dominates Midtown.
If you view Chicago in person from the lakefront, you can easily see it is more a more pleasing skyline.
@DFDalton1962 i know what you mean. thankfully the "gap" will stay for a while, this area (east village, chealse, tribeca, soho etc.) is one the most beautiful parts of manhattan. the west side is where the show will begin. about midtown: yes, it's the same with lower manhattan. the skyline seems "flat", there's nor real peak (except ESB). but that will change! carnegie 57 is already U/C in midtown, tower verre will soon follow. several other towers are approved or proposed. 1WTC has reached the
@DFDalton1962 38th floor and 4WTC the 7th. both 2 and 3 WTC are U/C. 3WTC will be built, 2WTC will be put on hold after reaching street level. but in 2,3 years the economy will be strong enough, so i'm positive that the whole WTC will be built. in 2013 NY will have a new skyline, after that several other supertalls will start construction. in 2015/16 everyone will be in awe. :-). and yes, you're right, currently chicago's and HK's skyline are more aesthetically pleasing. ;-)
@DFDalton1962 btw: only in NY (and maybe HK) you can put up a 200m tall skyscraper and it will get lost in the sheer mass. :-D also, when the WTC complex is finally done, the towers will create a "pyramid-like effect" if you know what i mean. it will look amzing. not to mention the memorial, with the pools and all. the WTC will become a major tourist attraction, that's for sure.
Kuala Lumpur made it to your list due to perhaps the unique qualities of the culturally-inspired buildings in the capital. With such a culturally diversed city's population architects and planners had great source of inspirations for their designs. Kuala Lumpur is a very visually awe-inspiring city. As a Malaysian I am proud my city is in your list.
sure some buildings are taller than NY buildings but have u seen the SPAN of the NY skyline compared to other skylines its endless, it should have atleast been at number 2 mind u theres tall buildings in every borough except Staten Island...thats four cities in one compared to these cities 1
@Enriquelio Yeah, I live 45 miles away and go there all the time. You just look and say, "Wow, more tall building." Compared to most cities they go on forever.
@Toronto324 It's according to what you define as tall. If you start at the 300 ft level for instance ny or chicago have many many times as many highrises than toronto. They get there facts from saying a 2 story building is tall. Not very accurate.Whoever came up with those stats is just into hype.
@soulerflare7 dude Toronto has over 2,000 highrise buildings over 20 stories way more than Chicago.. NY has more than Toronto, Yes.. but what i'm saying is that the future skyscrapers going up in Toronto will be more than Chicago or possibly NYc
@Toronto324 Toronto has 278 buildings 200 ft or higher . Chicago has 521 buildings 200 ft or higher.NYC has 1291 buildings 200 ft or higher. My point is buildings are just buildings .When you talk highrises you have to start from a certain reference point.Do you want me to start at 100 ft?The facts will still be chicago has more highrises.Toronto is an awsome city none the less .I would actually live there.I'm just giving unbiased facts because I dont live in nyc or Chicago
@soulerflare7 Toronto is ranked 10th in the world and 2nd in North America for Most active terms of high rise buildings.. .. Here's the List of cities with the most buildings.... 1. Hong Kong- 7,684 2. -New York City 5,900 3. Sao paulo- 5,667 4. Singapore -4,367 5. Moscow -3,016 6. Seoul -2,878 7. Tokyo 2,702 8. Rio de Janeiro- 2,564 9. Istanbul- 2,148 10. Toronto- 2, 000 (more).................18. Chicago with only 1,120 High rise buildings... Did not even make the top 15 on the list.
@Toronto324 I live in Toronto. Toronto has many puny buildings, no tall ones, except the CN tower, which is a tower. Not nearly as hard to build as a skyscraper
No, the New York skyline is not the 'most overrated' in the world, you dumb homophobe. It is the greatest skyline in the world!!! The views you get of lower Manhattan from Brooklyn Heights is incredible. Have you ever been to NY? Cause I'll get pissed if you are dissing the NY skyline without having even been there.
@Mattyb88ful Your funny, NY has a worse skyline than about 8 other cities, i'll write them if u want, NY's skyline is old and not tall and just really old, just like chicago, i meen just look at shanghai, hong kong, dubai kuala lumpur etc. I understand ur american and ur pride 4 ur country is way bigger than an average man for his country but admit it 2 urself if not to me, NY is OLD!!!!! looks like a city from 1960's, well thats what it is preety much. Even Paris has more modern buildings
Firstly, I am not American. I'm English. So, please don't claim that my preference for the NY skyline is biased.
Secondly, that NY has 'really old' buildings might be bad in your books, but it is a big positive in my books. I'm sick of these modern, ugly glass skyscrapers that have little, if any, character. It's all about the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building and etc.
Having said that, however, I love the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong. But that is rare.
@WOAINIWY what is it about new york that people think that its better than chicago??????? CHICAGO'S 4 BIGGEST SKY SCRAPERS ARE BIGGER THAN NEW YORK'S NUMBER ONE U QUEER!
weres LA ,montreal, vancouver, paris.plus i think you should of put san francisco higher especially to the new proposed 1,200 that gonna be made in 2012
What i dont like is people think that fast growing cities as Shanghai and the most of chinese cities change very quick for instance that pic of shanghai the world trade center is not even there and a bunch of buildings too and is only showing the Pudong side not the other side of the river where there is more buidings and u have to know that they are building a 636 m building there update pics before making a presentation!!!! i talk about shanghai cause i know it very well any ciy can be the sam

@Mattyb88ful MAN FUCK U!! THE MOST OVERRATED SKYLINE
crisj92i 1 year ago
@crisj92i
No, the New York skyline is not the 'most overrated' in the world, you dumb homophobe. It is the greatest skyline in the world!!! The views you get of lower Manhattan from Brooklyn Heights is incredible. Have you ever been to NY? Cause I'll get pissed if you are dissing the NY skyline without having even been there.
Mattyb88ful 1 year ago
@Mattyb88ful Your funny, NY has a worse skyline than about 8 other cities, i'll write them if u want, NY's skyline is old and not tall and just really old, just like chicago, i meen just look at shanghai, hong kong, dubai kuala lumpur etc. I understand ur american and ur pride 4 ur country is way bigger than an average man for his country but admit it 2 urself if not to me, NY is OLD!!!!! looks like a city from 1960's, well thats what it is preety much. Even Paris has more modern buildings

@drake717

My own list:
1 Hongkong
2 Shanghai( old version shown in the video. There are more skyscrapers now, such as 492m SWFC,460M+450M IFC)
3)New York
4)Chicago
5)Dubai

THEWEEDMAN714 1 year ago
What i dont like is people think that fast growing cities as Shanghai and the most of chinese cities change very quick for instance that pic of shanghai the world trade center is not even there and a bunch of buildings too and is only showing the Pudong side not the other side of the river where there is more buidings and u have to know that they are building a 636 m building there update pics before making a presentation!!!! i talk about shanghai cause i know it very well any ciy can be the sam

your list is pretty good. Shanghai should be ranked alittle higher, but it's still very good.

Singapore reminds me of L.A. I mean really compare the buildings and you see the resemblance. Although Singapore is larger.

Toronto should not be on this list. And I'm from Canada so I'm definitely not prejudiced.
YouStoleMyTube 10 months ago
I think Toronto is overranked. The CN tower is the only thing impressive and it doesn't even look nice. I'd like to see your list in 5 years though.
Thanks for uploading.
