I like the dance, but I still consider it exotic with talent dance. The costumes are all revealing unless you go out of your way to put on more. People danced in kaftans, full dresses, but modern belly dance they dance mostly in the bedlehs, belt and bra. The most authentic belly dance is Raqs Baladi, spelled wrong, but a good dance. They modernized the dance for stage in 1800s.

I don't think anyone today wants to watch a girl dance in traditional garb. I also wish that people would keep an open mind to new styles of the dance.

Ok belly dancers are not strippers but if your professional your getting paid because thats what you work as. yes a dancer will dance for free at times but they have to make a living.

There's lots of really great belly dancers out there (Sadie being one of them...).

If you want go look up dancers like Nadia Gamal, Samia Gamal or Amani, I know their pretty old school, but the way they dance is really authentic oreintal belly dancing, its the "real deal".

Exactly. They may or may not have gone to far at Rakkasah (I wasn't there) but I don't think they care... I think they are artists, and they wanted to push the envelope. We need the traditionalists, but we also need the ones who test the limits. Everyone just needs to do what it is that they are called to do whether is to preserve traditional dance, or take the dance in a different direction and see where it can go. We can't all be the same. BORING.
