@mysuper64 La Nina. There was a shift for the east coast, but this is just the calm before the storm. Next year will make 2010 and 2009 combined look like nothing. It will probably be looking like the winter that Alaska is having this year in terms of snow. One town got 18 FEET of snow, no not inches but FEET. Some homes were completely covered in snow, people are having to get food from their attic windows. This is what we could potentially be looking at for next year.
@d3ltadrive Let me guess: Valdez? lol that place has been known to get dumped on. 2011 was pretty bad though in Northern California. 700 inches of snow fell on Donner Pass, we were snowboarding on 8 feet of snow in July. If only every year were like that lol
Man i wish Chicago would get a big blizzard so i can be out of school they say it is suppose to be the worst but have not seen anything yet. But, that just problably mean the worst is coming. It needs to hurry up.
The NWS long range forecast is for the Mid-Atlantic to be above normal for temps this winter and the local mets here in Richmond VA are saying we will be lucky to see even average snowfall levels so I hope your forecast is right since I'm a snow lover.
1899,1895,1972,1974,1975 are the best analogs i can find. something very interesting i notice is that i can use weather maps from these years and predict weather this year with them pretty accurately with them. even down to individual events. the maps almost match up perfectly especially for 1974 and 1899.
Ah yes Brad; one of the Charlotte area's bigger TV met snow weenies haha. Strangely enough, we seem to predict nearly the exact same thing as far areas across the Upper Southeast, particularly NC, SC, and TN are concerned but I believe areas up north across the MA and NE will get into a lot of cold and snow as well. I had released my winter forecast earlier today. Check it out sometime and let me know what you think. Here's the link to my blog: gwxmanblog.blogspot.com
@piloneman I don't know about that! Brad is pretty accurate compared to any other meterologists in the area. Last year and 2009 since we were in a La Nina all of the local weather stations was saying warmer drier winter both years and they ended up going back changing their forecast. Brad had said a cooler snowy winter and he was right on. This is more the Charlotte Metro area also.
@df58 And it turned out winter of 2009-2010 was by far the most snowiest winter we have experienced by far. And after so much rain we have been having, I expect to see a form of repercussion this year.

Take the statement " snow only piles up to about an inch of liquid" with a grain of salt! Snow to liquid water ratios are highly variable.

@Barotropic lol In the west you can see as much as 40 inches of snow for every inch of water. I'd take that statement with the whole shaker of salt.

WRONG! The northeast/mid atlantic region is predicting above normal snowfall - more snowfall than this outlook.
