As for the origins of the song - it's a traditional original. Jeannie Robertson sang it to Hamish Henderson and it was immediately appropriated (understandably) by the early Scottish Folk revival. She only had a few verses, but as it's a pretty simple meter it's grown arms and legs over the years.
And you sing a lovely version; I'm not going to disagree with the poster that recommends you find your own voice, but I've heard much, much worse :)
Passable version I guess. But lose the faux English folk accent as the song was best known sung in a Irish accent. Then the fact that the guy in the song is called 'Jock' Stewart suggests it is a Scots song. I might be wrong of course. Non the less, a heartfelt attempt but would have been better Americanised as folk music trascends international boundaries - especially tradionals like this. Oh, and the performer is american (or Canadian - who can bloody well tell :) )
classic... well done big lad... the guitar is well played... im sure cait oriordan would be proud!!... it wasnt sinead oconnor by the way it was shane and the pogues bass palyer, cait o'Riordan.
I'm a big fan of the pogues, and I can honestly say that I prefer your version. The guitar playing is really well done, and in a style that is perfect for this song. Your voice also works well with it. Thanks for not murdering a great song!
Very nicely done. I came to Youtube in search of this song, as I was asked to learn it. I trust your version and lyrics best. I don't care who recorded it first! LOL! Yours is the only version that matters to me. Slainte!
Btw, Jospar is correct, it was Cait O'Riordan who sang it on Rum, Sodomy and the Lash, not Kirsty Maccoll, who didn't join The Pogues until Cait got engaged to Elvis Costello. Kirsty sang on the duet of Fairytale of New York.
Kirsty never really "joined the Pogues" as much as she just did a single with them. As far as I'm aware, that's the only song they collaborated together on.
Hi man!!!!! I've just seen your subscrition....thanks! I've posted my cover an my "dirty old town" too.....tell me what do you think about.... You play a lot of celtic songs...it's great....good voice and guitar playing... I hope to read you soon
The vocal on Rum, Sodomy and the Lash is Cait O'Riordan, the Pogues original bass player. She sings the song so well, it's a shame that she didn't do more through the years. She did end up marrying Elvis Costello after they recorded R,S and L together.
EXCELLENT VERSION!!

the girl in the song wasnt cait o'riordan, or sinead o'conner.
the girl was kirsty maccoll.
the same girl who recorded fairytale of new york.
she died tragically in a boating accident.
