to this handed down in the family for a couple hundred years now.

  • please God let me play like that

  • 5 stars lad

i only learnt this during the week

    well done *****

  • Oh that's so amazing, 5 stars !!! Do you have the tabs ? Thanks ;)

  • As for the origins of the song - it's a traditional original. Jeannie Robertson sang it to Hamish Henderson and it was immediately appropriated (understandably) by the early Scottish Folk revival. She only had a few verses, but as it's a pretty simple meter it's grown arms and legs over the years.

And you sing a lovely version; I'm not going to disagree with the poster that recommends you find your own voice, but I've heard much, much worse :)

  • BTW - very nice voice too.

  • Passable version I guess. But lose the faux English folk accent as the song was best known sung in a Irish accent. Then the fact that the guy in the song is called 'Jock' Stewart suggests it is a Scots song. I might be wrong of course. Non the less, a heartfelt attempt but would have been better Americanised as folk music trascends international boundaries - especially tradionals like this. Oh, and the performer is american (or Canadian - who can bloody well tell :) )

  • Hi this is really good! would you be able to send me the strumming patter you use?

  • Good job Gringo!

  • excellant as good a version as i've heard! wats your picking PATTERN?

  • Great voice and a guitar playing technique that is perfect for this song. Thanks for posting it!

  • Nice version mate!

  • Very Nice !!!

  • Mr. Rowe your the man

  • And here I was hiding out on Youtube. My cover is blown.

  • nice job man, thx for posting

  • Great version can you post the finger picking pattern you used?

  • nice version, the dubliners did this probably before most other recorded versions although I don't know who wrote it. Nice guitar on your version.

  • This is excellent and I enjoy it very much. Thank you.

  • classic... well done big lad... the guitar is well played... im sure cait oriordan would be proud!!... it wasnt sinead oconnor by the way it was shane and the pogues bass palyer, cait o'Riordan.

  • Your version doesn't have that amatuerish sound that you hear on Youtube so often. Pleasant to listen to!

  • I'm a big fan of the pogues, and I can honestly say that I prefer your version. The guitar playing is really well done, and in a style that is perfect for this song. Your voice also works well with it. Thanks for not murdering a great song!

  • Nice job Bucko!

  • Wow, absoluetly amazing! Best version I've seen on Youtube. Is there anyway you could share your chords/ fingerpicking pattern?

  • I'm gonna second this request for some sort of tab or something of the fingerpicking and such. really great version of such a good song.

  • Very nicely done. I came to Youtube in search of this song, as I was asked to learn it. I trust your version and lyrics best. I don't care who recorded it first! LOL! Yours is the only version that matters to me. Slainte!

  • Thank you very much :) It's a lovely song regardless.

  • Ummm .. Caitlin O'Riordan sang this, you norberts!

  • Wow, nice rendition of a great song, man!

Btw, Jospar is correct, it was Cait O'Riordan who sang it on Rum, Sodomy and the Lash, not Kirsty Maccoll, who didn't join The Pogues until Cait got engaged to Elvis Costello. Kirsty sang on the duet of Fairytale of New York.

  • great stuff, never heard the second verse before, btw it was kirsty maccoll sang it on the rum sodomy and the lash

  • It was actually cait who sang it

  • nice work

  • the girl in the song wasnt cait o'riordan, or sinead o'conner.

    the girl was kirsty maccoll.

the same girl who recorded fairytale of new york.

she died tragically in a boating accident.

  • actually it was cait o'riordan. Kirsty Maccoll didnt join the pogues until they recorded fairytale.

  • Kirsty never really "joined the Pogues" as much as she just did a single with them. As far as I'm aware, that's the only song they collaborated together on.

  • It doesn't really matter but I didn't actually write that comment. Someone seems to post comments occasionally with my login. Wierd.

  • Hi man!!!!! I've just seen your subscrition....thanks! I've posted my cover an my "dirty old town" too.....tell me what do you think about.... You play a lot of celtic songs...it's great....good voice and guitar playing... I hope to read you soon

  • Very very well done!!!!!!!! I'm going to post it too..... but your version is better than mine, of course..... Greetings from Italy

  • oh wow, very nice job. I haven't heard the Shane/Sinead version, but the Pogues verison is great, so job well done, sir. :)

  • Ok how many times have I listend to this song? I love this song!!

  • so many crap versions of great songs on youtube and every now and then you find a real gem.I dip me lid.

  • Great Song. Well done!

    Loved it!!

  • Proper Job!

  • Great playing! I thought it only fair to let you know I mentioned this song in a comment on my version of Jock Stewart.

  • just thought you'd like to know it was cait o'riordan, not sinead o'connor who sang this

  • Thanks guys. I've loved this song since I first heard it. It's one of those songs that go just right with a pint.

  • really nice cover u got urself there =) great stuff!!

  • I love this song and you did BEAUTI FULL!!!!

  • I like it.Are you Irish?

  • The vocal on Rum, Sodomy and the Lash is Cait O'Riordan, the Pogues original bass player. She sings the song so well, it's a shame that she didn't do more through the years. She did end up marrying Elvis Costello after they recorded R,S and L together.

  • But now I believe he is married to Diana Krall.

  • Very good !

  • OK, feel free to shoot me down on this, but didn't the singer on Rum Sodomy marry Elvis Costello(the producer) soon after.

  • Yeah, it was Cait O'Roidan.

  • fantastic dude

  • awesome... :)

    woooow ! :D

  • Excellent mate !

  • This song was on the Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash album, not sung by O'Connor. Great song/well done.
