The E46 looks much more robust than the E36 IMHO. I would put in the Signature Motoring performance intake kit for only around $150 and gain up to 13HP on the stock output for the 330i and a bit less for the 325 and 328. I highly recommend this item, see my youtube channel for the action video on it.
There are always jealous haters for every video on YouTube. . . Anyway, the same thing happened to me: I was driving slowly out of the parking garage at work when all of a sudden the revs went up and I was not gaining speed. It was like the transmission came out of gear. So; like you, I tried some other gears and quickly confirmed that the engine was not engaging with the trans. I had no warning, no slippage, just went bad like somebody turned off a switch to my clutch.
My daily driver is E46 328i and E30 325 weekends. 328i is more responsive with Signature Motoring performance (CAI) intake kit. Installed it myself in under half hour. HP increase on the E46 is about 13.5HP for a cost of $170 or around $17 per HP gain. Best 1st performance mod to do. Other application data:
@Pir4t Yes, dyno gains of before/after are available from Signature Motoring. They emailed them to me on the E46 330i. Further, Signature Motoring offers a money-back guarantee on HP gain so its HP in the pocket. I have a 328i. Cheers.
@Pir4t oh i was under the impression since you were driving it that you could have just drivin it to a shop. didnt think it was to the point that it wouldnt engage at all.
The Signature Motoring performance intake kit is only $170 and adds up to 9HP in the E46 323/325/328 and up to 13.9HP in the 330. That's about $17/per extra HP... A good value for the extra oomph.
@Pir4t good job man im probably going to do my clutch at the end of the summer along with the 5 gear shifter problem. idk if you get that but the shifter sometimes sits infront of the 5th gear insted of the middle 3-4th... pisses me off so much im taking the trans down to repair it
@xxxashleywhitexxx i Only have ASC , i have it off since the road was icy on some parts and not on other , having ASC cut power every few seconds bugs the shit out of you.
And if you know how to drive in bad weather a little ice isn't going to make you crash.
I had only noticed that it slipped a few days earlier , flooring it in 5th would rev more than i was gaining speed for a few seconds, so i was kind of expecting this , just not this fast :(
@Chiuas666 In a burnout you just have the tires slip , this was caused by slipping the clutch too much allowing it to get overheated making the metal in the presure plate "set" in the disengaged position.

Forgot to say: my car is a 2003 330xi 6 speed. I think I'm going to pull the trans before I just go ahead and order a clutch.

@BMWPOWER4U Do you have dyno of that gain ?
Modefying the stock airbox is the way to go unless you're looking for that special sound.

@Pir4t I think he's referring to the crap camera quality, but apart from that it's a great example video of a (heavily) cooked clutch, well done.

DisturbedBubble 1 year ago
if you new there was something wrong with the clutch why would you rev it so much???? just to make a youtube video???
PupleHaz420 1 year ago
@PupleHaz420 Basically , it was failing and would need replacement anyway.
Sure revving it would wear it a bit , but i would need a tow anyways ^^

OIC, I have an E46 M3, BMW clutches are generally adaptive, you don't notice slipping until it suddenly goes one day.
xxxashleywhitexxx 1 year ago
exactly !
I had only noticed that it slipped a few days earlier , flooring it in 5th would rev more than i was gaining speed for a few seconds, so i was kind of expecting this , just not this fast :(

I feather my clutch as well, still going strong though, especially with a CDV BMW forces you to burn your clutch somewhat.
xxxashleywhitexxx 1 year ago
well thats gonna happen if you burnout too much lol

same thing happen to mine but i just need the clutch kit not flywheel
DJP3RSIAN 2 years ago
this happened to me because my crankshaft seal was bad and oil went into the flywheel causing slip.
maqueavelico1 3 years ago
Aw that sucks :(
Luckely i "just" needed a new clutch kit (pressure plate forks got warped)
