  • Eric Johnson has to have the cleanest technique and tone there has ever been

  • if you had all erics gear, you still could never sound like him. i mean the dudes ears are so sensitive he can tell the difference between batteries.

  • Eric Johnson is amazing.

  • That clean echo stuff he improvised at the begining are some of the best sounds I've ever heard in my life..

  • Yeah it does the guy bk butler started making them again they look alittle different but sound the same.

  • His pedals look so old

  • @pacokja I've never found a Tube Driver for sale nowadays. I mean, a new one.

  • @wilasco2 no, im not criticizing him, im saying that they look cool

  • @pacokja i'm not criticizing as well, i just replied lol. if you want to buy a tube driver you'll have to search on ebay cause it doesn't exist anymore LOL

  • He's talking about keith richards, jimmy hendrix and eric clapton and so on, but alll I hear from beginning to end is... Eric Johnson signature sound... :)

  • The TONE RANGER only EJ

  • Im not the biggest fuzz box fan in the world (i like amp O/D mostly) but his o/d tone with that fuzzface is just lovely!

  • He is such a good person. Very calm and not flashy on stage. I love Vai but damn he can be too animated with those faces he makes.

  • I think that this equipment would suit me... ;->

  • I didn't give a damn about the amps, I only watched the video to hear his playing, who else has ?

  • freaky

  • I wish I could put all that equipment to as good of use as Eric does. Not that I own it but even my own guitar and amp, wish I could play it as good as Eric can.

  • I love his sound of guitar:)

  • The best

  • Of course, there are some guitar players who just plug their fuckin' cords into the amp and play. I believe Angus Young is one of them. He has a late 60's Gibson SG and a 100 watt Marshall. He plugs the cord into the amp, plugs the other end into the SG and hammers away. While he doesn't have anywhere near the talent of EJ (how many do?), I believe Mr. Young does have his own signature sound, eh?

  • @beeroosterm Agreed. I was a big EJ fan but could never reach that high point. With Angus, I just come in from work & bang for a couple of hours.

  • @azure0099 Well, there are times when I want to play in an Angus-like manner, and there are others when I want to try for Eric Johnson. If I really want to frustrate the shit out of myself, I practice my alternate picking for several hours in order that I might learn a few bars of any Steve Morse tune...

  • @Clivebarker88 No. Not stoned - just a very laid back Texan...

  • Funny how the marshalls are seen so synonymous with Hendrix, when on his biggest albums he used Fend Dual Showman heads.

  • This video is Gold

  • Very rare to have such technical expertise AND soul, EJ has both!

  • My favorite guitarist, he's all about soul.

  • superb sound/playing,plus a humble guy.

  • who is the jerk-off who just said he has too much money if he has pedals laying around the room? dude, its eric johnson. People give him shit for free cuz he is one of the worlds greatest guitar players. some of the best players of our time worship this guy. wut rock did u just crawl out from under. ps, u can save up to 15% by switching to geico! :)

  • Ahh fuzz face, i should use mine more, just wish it had an AC plug hole because the 9v battery dies too quickly.. :(

  • Funny...Every1 is like how does he get that amazing tone??? Well if u were famous and had ten thousand dollars or more to spend on equipment u could have close to the same tone.. Its not like hes playing through a couple of pedals and an amp. It takes sum guitarists their whole life to achieve the tone they are seeking.

  • @rainz777 you hit the nail on the head. luckilly for me i have a pod x3 live pedalboard which singlehandedly overthrew a dozen amps and a refrigerator sized effect rack and im constantly chasing tone and finding different tones and im still constantly messing around with everything inside the machine. i being a guitar player for 15 out of my 21 years of life am constantly evolving different guitar sounds and everything.

  • Lol, his Hendrix sounds to clean X)

  • does he use a Standard or Vint dyna comp? Cant tell if he has a jumpy clean tone or a melodic one maybe he just does both ;)

  • @GTYOYO As for the Dyna Comp, I'm not positive which one he uses, but I would more than likely says it's an original. They're a simple, great-sounding compressor.

  • He has too much money if he has guitars and effects just laying around the entire room.

  • @MarvelousLight10 he deserves all of it !!

  • @xSnoweyexp I totally agree!

  • @ 0:20 what tc electronic pedal is that?

  • @TheRealDanielYee TC Electronic Stereo Chorus Flanger. its the shit

  • even though nobody would like to listen to me I'd really like to have gear like that at my fingertips to play through.

  • The King of Clean.

  • Great Video thanks! I love the way he plays those expanded chordal changes, with such a beautiful etheral clean tone, Eric really knows how to thread all those effects together so tastefully. thats how i like my tone to sound (if i had the money!). His dirty tone is so creamy but but not muddy enough to swamp the clarity of each note he plays, all these riffs and licks are so unique. Eric Johnson such a crafted player and a gentleman too, very rare these days!

  • 7:35....i love his sense of humor

  • It's not about his rig. It's about his HANDS.

  • The wood under the tube driver is suposed to keep out electrical noise. At least that is what I read somewhere.

  • 5:08 - 5:38 Beautiful!!! Love Eric's playing, especially deep shits :)

  • Almost everything he played reminded me of cliffs of dover!! XD awesome!!!!

  • his dirty rythym tone is beautiful

  • its all in the Hawaiian shirt

  • "i spend waiting to much time working on my gear try to get the tone" Anybody have the answer to the Eric Johnson Tube Driver/Plank of wood mystery?!!

  • "i spend waiting to much time working on my gear try to get the tone"

  • Shit, 2:00 is the shit!

  • love his phrasing!

  • I'm fairly certain EJ uses Chuck Norris' thumb nails for picks.

  • I wish we could have an Eric Johnson gear tour every day

  • EJ is the only guy I see doing jazz runs with a fuzzed out tone. So great.

  • He also uses 70's Echoplexes for delay/reverb sounds. Note these are not tube driven just vintage solid state. The fuzz-face is a proto- type. The same one Joe Bonamasa has in his pedalboard.spiderjohn.

  • He's so freakin rare cause' he never get old ...

  • i love how he's like "yeah, im cutting off whatever you're saying. SHRED SHRED SHRED" i would too, if i were him.

  • I listen to this every day because it makes me happy and it's inspiring

  • The way he phrases chords is just freaking gorgeous man.

  • @techie646 it is superhuman. I swear

  • I thought only doctors could Angels, but God speaks through this cat. Its just so pleasing to listen to him play.

  • the 4 people who disliked this video are metal heads .LOL

  • @dondinoy lol i am a huge fan of heavy metal however im one of the select few that has such a broad taste. and despite that i play in a hard rock/metal band all my influences would suprise the stereotypical metalhead lol. eric johnson, allan holdsworth, alex lifeson are my top influences and i play in a metal band hahaha

  • Seems like a nice guy - great explanation of his pedals - but I'd like to hear him straight into his amp, maybe with just the compression and some echo, and oh a little chorus lol...pedals are addicting! But really some straight in play Eric. You're definitely good enough

  • I saw a video of him playing on the same Amp as me. And it sound incredible, i don't know why!! I think you can sound like Eric Johnson only if you are Eric Johnson...

  • what a sound

  • That is the cleanist PLAYER I've ever heard..

  • He has such great skills and tone but doesn't even have a proper pedalboard! This man has his priorites straight...

  • Nice tone Eric! We have the same taste in guitar sounds exactly! I feel good knowing someone of your stature loves the tones that I have always used. Thanks.

  • what are effects Eric Johnson uses in 0:26 and 0:43??

  • @bacalhaues no fx, straight to the 2 Fender Twin Reverb Amps, I think he has the roland Echoplex on but that only affects the signal of his mics but the sound in general is basically straight into both fenders

  • @bacalhaues at 0.26 its just his guitar straight into his fender twin (with a bit of the amp's reverb), at 0.43 its the TC electronic chorus/flanger on the chorus setting, after that he adds the EH memory man delay, and then the MXR dyna-comp (not sure which one...)

  • @aektzis91 you forgot to say that he also uses the TC chorus to split his signal in stereo so he can use both twin reverbs

  • I usually dont like distortion on guitar, But Players like Eric use it good. I really dont like muddy distortion just my oppinion though.

  • The chord at 5:19 is perfection.

  • What's wrong with the 4 douches who disliked this?

  • He is Sex....and yes, my grammar is correct....

  • He is a guitar scientist...

  • i don't know why but i like that part at 5:24

  • @DANDAMANX5000 because its mentally sweet?

  • You'd think he'd have a neater layout

  • Notice that his pick-up switch selector is in position 2 when playing the cream EC tone, why #2? Also when playing the Cream tone, he has some decent overdrive going on, THEN he switches to the "Tubedriver" for more gain. You guys have any idea how loud his 100w Marshall has to be to get overdrive, he says that he has them on 10!!! That will blow your face off if your anywhere near it! CRAZY tone and VOLUME!!!

I have a 50w plexiglas and that is LOUD, can't imagine a 100w at full volume!

  • @ts808heaven 100w isnt actually a lot louder than 50w. for example, to be twice as loud as 50w you'd need 500w. anyways, i think when he says "to add more gain" i think its more to add some extra "smoothness" and overdrive to the sound but not to actually make it louder. also, he doesnt have it in the #2 position, you can actually see/hear him swtich it over to the bridge position. i think he was in position 2 for the fuzz tone.

  • @timmy47 ..ok, who uses position #2 for fuzz!!??? Hmmm.

  • @ts808heaven he does i guess? lol

  • Watching this just makes me wanna sell all my gear and just start again.

  • @surrealisticlee i feel you. :/

  • I would LOVE to know which Marshall he's using for his dirty rhythm tone, the head on the chair ?

  • @fend14 usually old 68 and 67 plexi's!

  • @fend14 '69 marshall plexi 100?

  • @fend14 I believe it's a JTM 45

  • Makes me want to put my bass down and pick up the guitar for a bit

  • Is he using the Keeley compressor?

  • Looks like a dyna comp

  • @dhs0877 not just an mxr dyna comp, but the old 1970's script version.

  • @Dedalusalley mxr, he says it in the vid

  • camon for BRASIL johnson ???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 3 ppl dont krow wat music

  • great guitarist obvious influence on Joe Bonamassa who I also love!

  • What I love about EJ is that he is so entirely humble and down-to-earth, unlike so many stars who are egotistical prima donnas. He openly shares his techniques and knowledge with the rest of us. He is not only a guitar hero, he is a teacher as well!

  • 1:59 what chord(s) is that?

  • @MichaelD8393 'Start Me Up' by the Stones, which is a regular C to C6sus4, although Keef would have played it in open G tuning, Eric transposes it into regular tuning here. Hope this helps.

  • @geetarmikey it does thanks very much.

  • The greatest Fuzz tone on earth!

    2:38

  • basically this is the interview... "first I shred clean then little less clean than distorted" but he does it in 8 min haha

  • The sound can cure a pain.. so beautiful..

  • @CCSkawaii no no,Eric Johnson can cure a pain.

  • Eric Johnson is such an underrated guitarist. He's one of the greatest players ever and deserves more credit! I can't believe some people think Vai/Satch/Van Halen are all awesome and they're like "who's EJ?"

  • ok after watching this video... i realize one thing. EJ is ALMOST as good as i am. ahahahah omfg hell no jk jk. i love him and his music. im totally jealous of his surreal tone. i dont know what it is about it. his tone is just amazing!!!

  • Perfect :D one of the main reasons why i play guitar !!

  • The sweetest Guitar player on Earth.

  • Damn when I put fuzz on it sounds like a mess, when Eric does plays it it sounds like a violin.

  • That is the cleanist distortion I've ever heard...

  • @rb204 It's not about the distortion. It's about his HANDS.

  • Eric Johnson is definitely an amazing guitar player, but the fact that he thinks that pedal sounds better because its turned a certain way or sitting on a block of wood is ridiculous! Different position in the chain is obvious, but turned a certain way is ridiculous!

  • @mrhauskins he can be ridiculous....lol....whatever gets the tone in your head.

  • The Greatest!

  • i dont know man, thats pretty cool but at 5:20 - 5:38, i got lost in a dream....

  • @Dunford00

    So i

  • mutant..

  • hola! por favor,me podrian decir en español el nombre de todos los pedales que esta usando eric??? muchas gracias!

  • I love when he says "Keith Richard type of thing" or "Jimi Hendrix"... Still sounds like Eric Johnson to me. Which is good.

  • Great demonstration !

  • 'My' top 3 picks for fav tone: Eric Johnson, David Gilmour, and of course EVH.

  • Eric Johnson has always had a great tone!

  • Gilmour's tone is better.

  • That strat is gorgeous!

  • Andy timmons uses alot of the same pedals actually

  • a really great guy, met him a couple of times, kind of inspiring to meet someone who has given his ALL to guitar, love his acoustic playing too...........

  • his tone is awesome

  • As a long-time guitar "tinkerer" myself, I think most guitarists writing songs often make the guitar parts take over (too much so) the song - which, although natural, is a tendency that should be guarded against. At their core, guitar-oriented songs usually sound good stripped down to vocals, lyrics, melody and played on an acoustic guitar. Innovative sonic embellishments rarely will make a song, already dull/mediocre at its core, much better. Then again, what do I know.

  • that fuzzface give it a nice violin sound.

  • that clean tone is probably the best clean tone I've ever heard

  • LONG LIFE ERIC JOHNSON!

  • tabs?

  • @triggaj16: Which part? I've worked out most of the cleans except for the very first thing he plays and the part when he turns on the compressor

  • @visiting31 thats what i need.. ive tried workin it out, but didnt get anywhere. is there a way to get me tabs of what you got?

  • Great in the studio, yet EJ's tone and sound are that good LIVE! He is such a fanatic about tone and sound setups - he's really much like a craftsman from another time. First saw him live about 25 years or more and was just completely blown away - first with his playing, and then with his awesome live sound. Talked to him briefly and he was such a shy and humble guy - no rock star ego at all. EJ IS the TOTAL package when it comes to playing electric guitar. He's no slouch on acoustic either!

  • @philipatozwhen I saw him play 10 feet in front of me and his tone was nothing to write home about. Messed up quite a few times on Cliffs too.

  • @Stringprodigy, well, all I can say is he's NOT God, he's a guitar player, but a very extraordinary one. EJ has the odd night off just like anyone else. And although I find him a fantastic player, I think he is a just ok songwriter. It's almost like he comes up with all these dazzling riffs and beautiful parts, and then he tries to glue them all together to build a song. Not sure that's a good approach. Also, he would be better off finding a good vocalist (not himself) and keeping him.

  • @philipatoz I agree with all of that. I just think people need to realize he's human instead of putting him on the GOD pedestal. Not that you were doing that...I've seen the best of the best screw up on stage. Vai, Satriani, Guthrie Govan, Buddy Guy, etc etc etc...

  • There is only one Eric Johnson! No pretension anywhere to be found.

  • I love his sound, I don't really like the digital rack he uses though. I would rather just hear his pure tone from his amp and pedals.

  • the clean tone is sweet n delicious...

  • Amazing! My ears are in heaven!

  • I swear, he has the most beautiful clean tone I've ever heard. 5:17 - 5:39 brings a tear to an eye.

  • got a fuzz face yesterday!!!!

  • God i love his clean tone.

  • where's the school where they teach you all those chords?

  • @DanH1970 You can make chords.

G Mjr. Has the notes GBD so just find GBD anywhere else on the neck and add any octaves.

  • Amazing tones......fan or Eric for years...

  • his clean tones create in an image in my head of liquid crystal waterfall

  • 0:37 - 0:40 Amazing chords

  • I'm pretty sure that chord at 5:10 is physically impossible... I've tried everything and I just CANNOT figure out how he's playing that on 5 strings, with the last note tapped. Someone tell me how to play this...

  • @nezmaster1: 'harp' harmonics :)

  • @nezmaster1 have a look at this vid. It might help explain what he is doing to a degree. It looks to me like it is a variation on the technique without the bending.

Basically seems to be using his thumb to pick and both hands to finger.

  • @AaronIsaac1 Think thats a pick in hand w/ finger picking to get chords. Ya know.

  • @nezmaster1 search Eric Johnson Koto

cannot seem to post the link

  • he has the best sound ever.

  • He seems like a great guy and always has had great tone. But it would be nice to see him in a talented band with a great singer and create more original music. I see Joe Banomassa (spelling) getting popular on both Eric Johnson and early Clapton ideas about playing guitar. There are a lot of shredders out there but they loss the feel of players like Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck. Keep going Eric it would be good to see you playing out more in a group setting with a proper lead singer.

  • simply amazing man, he was one of my first influences and when i heard him for the first time i definitely fell in love with his playing...thanks Mr johnson check out some of my cool videos by the way! aha!

  • one of the most talented human beings to ever touch a guitar. i've never seen/heard a smoother player....and probably never will

  • 5:00 no words to say...i just wanna cry.

  • if i could have any super power, it would be EJ's guitar skills.

  • Top 3 Most Underated Guitar Players:

    3- Jeff Beck

    2- Stanley Jordan

    1- Eric Johnson

  • i could listen for days , the tone is magic , the playing is spectacular, ej rules ,happy 4th all !!

  • Eric Johnson is just outstanding. definitly best guitarist tone wise and incredibly fast and great at chord progressions...whatever he plays at :45 till 1:09 and then 1:16 till 1:27 just makes you wanna think of a time where everything is just perfect and no worries at all. thats what his tone does to me and his tone makes everything "unreal" and to the point where it just gets you caught up in great memories. i never want him to stop playing. LIKE this post if you know what i mean!!

  • @xxslashxx1994 very eloquently stated! I feel the same about EJ and his amazing music.

  • Eric Johnson and my older brother are the reason I got so into improving my tone, I was the guy that used solid state amps and that baught guitars for the looks. He's the man.
