To be honest I have no idea what the chords are. When I play autoharp I imagine it to be a harmonica and that is how I play it. weird I know, but it seems to work. The chords can be found by googling chords to Jesu Joy. I bet you can find them out there somewhere. thanks for listening
unfortunately, I play by ear only so i have no idea what chords I am playing, I sort of go by feel. If the truth be told, I imagine the autoharp as a harmonica, since I played diatonic harmonica since 5th grade. So I kind of lift up the key when I would inhale and press down when I would exhale. Sounds crazy but it seems to work ok.
perhaps you could find the chords to Jesu in a guitar book, then transpose or adjust them for your harp.
This is just astonishing! I'm sitting here in awe. I use my autoharp for vocal accompaniment only - and I would give anything to be able to play like you do. And Bach, yet!! Five stars and then some.
Your autoharp is beautiful. What kind is it? Is it a chromatic or diatonic? I have just bought an old OS120CN and also have a few others. I'm hoping to buy an Orthey or D'aigle harp soon.
It is custom made diatonic by Bob Taylor of Upper Montclair NJ. He made it in 1985. At one time he was the maker of the 1st prize winner's autoharp Winfield Kansas International Autoharp Championship. The sound is unmatched. He is an amazing luthier.
I just received my D'aigle diatonic harp yesterday. It is absolutely beautiful He has many unique features including fine tuners that are simplest for tuning and changing string. He has a website . Ask him. A person at the Calif. Autoharp Gathering had a large number of autoharps including Orthey and D'aigle. D'aigle really sounds great!!!
the gentleman who made this harp for me worked for Ocar Schmidts when they were still in the USA 25 years ago. This is a custom Bob Taylor autoharp made in 1984 in Montclair NJ.
He is retired from his day job now so hopefully will start building these babies again

I am always amazed out how anyone can get anything out of this damnable instrument other than a basic rhythm. A member of my folk band tried to teach me over several months how to play melody on it, and all it ultimately resulted in was me wanting to smash it.
Patience, my young padawan, just focus on what you struugle with and work on what you really suck at and you'll get it. I play piano and I really suck at certain things which I work on daily and they've improved. =) Good luck!
The maker is Bob Taylor of Clapping Trees Instruments, Upper Montclair NJ. It is diatonic key of C, and the nicest sounding A harp I have ever played. He built the championship harps for Winfield International Autoharp Championships in 1984-85. This instrument was a gift from him . I lived with him for a year while I was finishing medical school and got to watch and listen as he built them. I never took A harp seriously until after he gave me one!!

Yours is one of the more skillful and imaginative styles of autoharp playing I've seen/heard.
And that harp does have a sweet sound. I'm glad it's in good hands.

Thanks for posting this. I've been searching for Bach for autoharp for years, and have come up empty. Is the arrangement available?
jthetramp 4 years ago
No, I am afraid I play by ear only and have no idea of how this arrangement would look. Sorry.
dobrodoc 4 years ago
Go to cyberpluckers (do a search) or Autoharp Quarterly. There is an arrangement for this Bach piece.
