My god,, a support act to the police, i cant believe that,, here are some lyrics from sting and his no talented band,, da do do do da da da thats all i want to say to you,,,and some from squeeze,, the devil came and took me from barter street to boogie, no more nightd by the telly.....oh yeahh the police were great eh,,
Did you not notice that the photographs are of a live gig by Squeeze. I never claimed that this was a live performance the music is just a backing track to some early photos of the band which I took and uploaded for Squeeze fans. Are you a Squeeze fan? If not SHUT UP!!!
I saw Glenn on one of his solo tours a few years back at The Magic Bag in Ferndale Michigan.
After the show he was hanging out shaking hands and signing his cd's. When a fan approched him with a guitar and asked him if he would please sing "From a Whisper to a Scream" with him. The fan played the guitar and the 2 of them sang it perfectly. It was an awesome a momment I will never forget.
I saw one of their more bizarre performances. Does anyone else remember seeing Squeeze supporting The Tubes at Hammersmith in May 1979? Squeeze took the stage with a replacement drummer, because Gilson was 'unwell'. The replacement was the Tubes' percussionist, and former member of Santana, James Mingo Lewis. He tore into every track with latin aplomb - totally inappropriate for most of Squeeze's material, but utterly mesmerising all the same because he was really going for it.
Love the side shots of Jools. I've just finished reading Jools Holland's autobiography - Barefaced Lies and Boogy Woogy Boasts. Really excellent and you'll learn an awful lot about early Squeeze.
i love squeeze, and it is sad to see them opposed to the police. but, the police have influenced (according to acknowledgements, cover versions and critics) rush, nirvana, foo fighters, pearl jam, alanis, tori amos, metallica, razorlight, mansun, the cry, novo combo, men at work, yes, grand national, maná, nek ... and many others
and almost every band you named and bands you didnt name were influenced by squeeze, which is more difficult considering the arrangements are much more complex than the police's music. I love the police, but stings face had alot to do with album sales. It takes a music lover to enjoy squeeze's genius, where as the police were a band for the masses that also had great musicianship. 2 very different products
I was at that show too! Great time capsule here with the photos, and set to my favorite song at that. (Though DAMN, I wasn't aware of this Squeeze/Police soap opera.)
One of the greatest songs to come out of Squeeze! An extremely underated band. However, I disagree entirely with HarrysBar's comments on their "ignomy" supporting The Police. For god sakes, The Police were the greatest band to come out of the late 70's and 80's. Jools and the boys should feel blessed to have supported such a seminal band. Squeeze are fantastic in their own right, but The Police are unreal. Cheers for both bands (ok maybe a few more for The Police!)
the police are nothing compared to squeeze... so take your police bullshit outah here. you sound like an arrogant piece of shit, like your buddy, sting.
Clearly you blatantly disregard the vast superiority of: ticket sales, album purchases, top ten hits, world wide appeal, influential status, and musical proficiency of The Police. Is it a coincidence that Squeeze was always the support group to The Police? Hmm..I think not. Go back to ur keyboard and dream of jerking off Jools. THERE IS NO ROOM FOR COMPARISON.
You needed to have been there at the time to know how Miles Copeland shafted Squeeze in order to finance his brothers band but that's a whole other can of worms. Perhaps you might enlighten us as to which bands cite the Police as major influences on their work as there are many who point to Squeeze as a seminal influence, such as Radiohead, Crowded House, Lily Allen. By your argument Englebert Humperdink is bigger than Buddy Holly clearly bunkum.
Hey man, let's be fair. Squeeze is good, but Police inspired fake white Reggae/New Wave like Culture Club... And UB40.... Er, come to think of it. Yeah. Squeeze is superior.
Seriously though, I feel some sympathy for the Police. They wanted to be 'in' so bad, and none of the influential bands would give them the time of day.
stewart copeland is the best thing the police have going for them, and he gets kudos from all the greats. Sting was always wanting to sellout, stewart tried to keep it real as long as he could, but sting wanted that fame and icon status. squeeze put the song first everytime
Popularity is no relation to talent, if it were then people like brintny spears and people of her ilk would be the most talented entertainers in the world
Have you listed to all TWELVE of their albums? When you do, compare and contrast this magnificent output to the paltry back catalogue from the Police, no comparison in my view, Squeeze win hands down.
Oh man I have search this song at the Youtube! Finally I found it! I love this record, it's a masterpiece - I considering ArgyBargy being one of the best rock album of the 80's!
I saw Squeeze in concert 1982, the year after East Side Story was released - I love you guys...I'm your number one fan! Lol!
Thanks Harry super collection of photos and what a song brilliant. Tilbrook is still packing them in wherever he goes - haven't heard him but they say it's a super set.
PS I drink in Harry's Bar from time I'll send you a pic !
That will be fantastic! I don't have one photo of the bar which is a real shame (too busy serving pints of Bass). If you get the chance to go and see Glen and his band The Fluffers you will not be disappointed, they are really great.
Two fat ladies window shop something for the mantlepiece, in for bingo at night its a penny for sweet little niece. Is that what they're singing? I sang it in my band for years. Along with a bunch of their other greats. What a band. What songs.
Just listened while following along w/lyric on another site. Finally understood what I never could after years. One of my all time favs. Are they talking about a specific event or area...does anyone know? thx
Thanks Harry, for sharing. Much appreciated. Jools Holland hasn't really changed much in 27 years other than moving from the least prominence in the group to the most famous.
That's true although from a musical perspective Squeeze have left us a fantastic legacy. Julian was always very gregarious, street wise and sharp as a pin right from the start and was always bound for stardom. Anyway, thanks for the comment and good luck.
saw the mighty SQUEEZE with radio stars and eddie and the hot rods at BRADFORD ST. GEORGES HALL in '77!
total quality! and they were on first!

Great pix. In a perfect world Summers and Copeland would not have to suffer Sting.
Squeeze-XTC-Cure-Banshees these are just a few of the artists I rank ahead of Police.

I'm not sure if I understand what's going on here...
But if it's between the Police & Squeeze, my vote is for Squeeze. Next to Difford & Tilbrook, it's very hard for me to take the Police seriously.
5 stars for absolutely great rare pics.

"Anyone know what chord he plays when he sings "fee-eet"?"
G#6 down to G6. The easiest way to play it is just using the top four strings.
The whole progression for "Maid Marian on her tiptoe feet" is Dm-Bflat-Am-G#6-G6. I play them all as barres at frets 5, 6 and 4.

How about that guitar break where they take turns to play the same chord while Gilson builds the tension.
The release is glorious.
To hudooguru, it is about a young Chris Difford being taken away for the weekend by a friends family.
His first time in a car, and they had a caravan too.
I suspect it was the first time at the coast for him.
Get the book 'Squeeze, song by song'. It's available pretty cheaply on the net.
