Clint Mathis is a prime example of why USMNT supporters should despise MLS. They blocked him from joining Bayern Munich, where he could have been great and a Team USA legend as a result (much like they recently did to Landon Donovan to Everton) just because all they care about is money. They don't care if we're the joke of the football world. All they want is money. Nothing else is important to them. He went to Hanover 96 and dealt with a shit manager who stifled his talent instead. Thanks, MLS
Clint Mathis was a beast perfect mixture of a player scored 5 goals in a game and got called for 9 penalties in a game. They guy has talent and a fire. He is one of the best Americans to ever do it.
i agree with u 100%. mathis could have bin alot bigger if bob bradley waz coachin at the time. arena only favored united players who did nothing but score own goals (jeff agoos).
Man, he used to be pretty good. If only he wasn't so unfit now then he probably still would be. Just needs a good physical regime to get him back into shape and then he'd start firing again.
I wouldn't say Mathis was a completely wasted talent. Look at his goal versus South Korea in World Cup 2002. Talk about nerves of steel in what was the most intimidating atmosphere for a match I've ever seen. In retrospect, that goal turned out to be huge for us eventually reaching the QF, and South Korea was QUALITY that year.
to some extent the MLS stopped him from reaching his maximum potential when they stopped Munich from signing him. I think that really demoralized him, and sent him to a team that didnt give him the same experiences he could have had with Munich. Too bad. I think it really would have done alot for the National Team.
It's the only reason why i hate MLS. They tried to do the same to Clint Dempsey. Mathis could have finally been a big name in Europe for US Soccer but MLS FUCKED it up.
wow, the league has improved a lot. Just look at how little amount of people there were. Now its average to have 18,000. Well, except for a red bulls game. Unfortunetly for my favorite team, they don't excactly have the best audiences.
metrostars please come backk

Five goals and they even took him out. He could've had six, had they left him in. Long live Cleetus.

just shows how much the league has improved, you won't ever see mathis or anyone like him do that again. maybe if ronaldo came, but short of that no.
