I think the killers ran into Steve Parent at the end of the driveway which is where they shot him so maybe it was too far away for the victims to hear the gunshots. Also, this was before 911 or cell phones existed. The killers had cut the phone wires to the house and no victim had a gun to defend themselves. No one will ever know if the victims possibly heard gunshots or not. Very tragic event.

@godkingbeast: The prosecution had only three options to work with. One was not to give any of them immunity and risk losing the case. Give Atkins immunity although she admitted to stabbing Frykowski and Tate that night, or petition the court to grant Kasabian immunity. Remember she didn't kill anyone. Which sanario would you have gone with? Would you rather have given Atkins immunity, or none of them. Or would you have given Kasabian immunity for her testamony? There's your choices.

Prison is probably the safest place for all of them. None of then could or should have a life on the outside. It was a horrible crime. I was 14 at the time. This crime brought an end to the hippie consciousness. The assasination of Bobby Kennedy, and this one year later caused us to lose that innocence. Kent State finished it off.

They had originally made a "deal" with Susan Atkins but quickly learned she couldn't be trusted so they turned to Linda Kasabian who, although there had not killed or threatened to kill anyone. It's not unusual to give the person with the cleanest hands a deal to get the whole story out. Linda never wavered on the stand and her story never changed.
