This movie was amazing, i dont think it was racist. Its kind of like Pocahontas but more adventurous. What makes the movie great is the creativity that was seen in this movie, I have never seen such great creativity in my whole life and the plot was good as well.

In almost every story told in Hollywood the hero is almost always a white man. Kevin Costner in Dances with Wolves, Tom Cruise was The Last Samurai (lol). Avatar reminded me of Americans vs Native Americans and/or Africans. The only problem I had in the Movie is the "hero" of the movie is white. Why have a white hero, why can't the hero be of other color or race or ethnicity. Its whitewashing, just like in Prince of Persia, The Last Air Bender, Dragon Ball, The Last Samurai (with Tom Cruise) and so many others. The movie is not racist but overall I just felt it was another "white hero movie".

I love this movie and I think it holds many ideas and values worth exploring. Whether it's about how to live with and as nature or about cultural heritage. The Navi hold very much similarities with traditional African and other native cultures, but they are idealized in their ways after all which is a very important and good part from my point of view, since their ways are way more natural and sustainable than our modern western ways!

But many are alive who descend from slave owners. As such, those who are descendants of slave holders are people who indirectly benefit from the wealth and social prosperity that was obtained through the oppression of another group. Tis true when they say that the sins of the father fall upon the son.
many of the dependents of the slave owners are black, also. that means we should blame them, also. so now black and whites are both responsible for slavery.
Except the majority of such instances of shared lineage on the part of Black people, is due to the frequent rape of female slaves by White male slave owners. Even Blacks who had one White parent were still forced into slavery and denied rights and property. So very very few Blacks in the position you speak of, have benefited from a lineage that connects them to a slave owner. You should read "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl." It will be useful to you so that you can understand the history.
As an additional note, I am not saying that every White person should feel guilty or give up all they have because of the horrible history that brought us to where we all our right now. But it is truly sad when people dismiss the history because they want to avoid the guilt. It is better to accept the history, respect it and find a way to move forward from there.

I never said I was casting blame. But you can continue to be in denial of the truth if that so pleases you. The reality is, that the position that many Whites enjoy today, is due to the poor conditions they foisted upon various populations (indigenous Americans, Africans etc).

The Civil Rights movement only came to a head in 1964. For people my age (26), my parents were alive and well to see the discrimination that served as an extension of the oppression of slavery. In almost every story told in Hollywood the hero is almost always a white man. Kevin Costner in Dances with Wolves, Tom Cruise was The Last Samurai (lol). The ones who write the stories write themselves into the story but I noticed a long time ago in movies and TV that a white MAN always saves the day. Avatar reminded me of Americans vs Native Americans and/or Africans. The only problem I had in the Movie is the "hero" of the movie is white. Why have a white hero, why can't the hero be of other color or race or ethnicity. Its whitewashing, just like in Prince of Persia, The Last Air Bender, Dragon Ball, The Last Samurai (with Tom Cruise) and so many others. The movie is not racist but overall I just felt it was another "white hero movie".

I love this movie and I think it holds many ideas and values worth exploring. Whether it's about how to live with and as nature or about cultural heritage. The Navi hold very much similarities with traditional African and other native cultures, but they are idealized in their ways after all which is a very important and good part from my point of view, since their ways are way more natural and sustainable than our modern western ways!

For the record, note that I never said that I felt this movie was racist. Does it trivialize things? To a degree it does. But it should be obvious where Cameron's intentions lie. He has been vocal that this is an anti-Iraq War and pro-environmentalist allegory of sorts.
So his heart is in the right place. People are perhaps choosing to take it negatively and that is their prerogative. As it stands, I enjoyed this movie thoroughly. Still, some people warranted a response to their comments.

YOu make no sense, this movie does infact highlight the atrocities commited by PEOPLE against other PEOPLE all over the world, the one that seems most commonly remembered is the taking of native africans and the habitation of the native americans land.If anything it may wake some naieve "white people" up a bit as to how that must feel.The people screeming racism are African Americans YET this film highlights thier plight if anything.If anything it shouldbe applauded.

The white man dosent want to be like them. Sure he wants to be able to walk, but ultimately, they want to pillage, plunder, and rule races they believe are inferior. This movie is racists because it try's to make the white people look like Hero's as they do this. At the end he tells the Navi people "There's no use in trying to fight back, the white man is too powerful for you. Only thing you can do is give up now or fight and die" entire movie is racist, if you can't see that then so are you.

as i looked at all the comments i see that almost all of them try to personly rleate to this movie..why? who knows...i dont find this movie to be racist in any way...however it does show that americans..white people from the west can be influenced so much by other cultures because they dont have a set of believes to live their lifes by...they dont have a real deep connection to whats around them..and are only materialistic individuals!

I don't know if it's just white people because I feel that somehow humans just don't evolve. Just watching the news and seeing how people hate poor people and defend rich people just does my head in. If Avatar was real, I can see people marching on Washington for caring more about the blue people than real Americans.

one other thing, if this movie is so rascist, and they have black actors playing the natives, then why the fuck would a black, let alone any color of actor work in a movie that would obviously portray them in a negative, rascist sense, its just stupid to think that the way a story is told, or the color of the actors who are involved in the telling, or showing of the story, could belay racism, it is truly sad to see the decline in rational thought that plagues our society

wtf is with everyone talking about the blacks! this movie is about what the colonists did the to native peoples! a lot of people seem to be blind to this from a lot of the comments I'm seeing. I'm Mohawk and take huge issue with my history, indeed there are some racist aspects to this film, but only cuz james is showing what the colonists did to us!
he's not saying anything wrong about the native peoples, if anything, it's the americans that are being shown for what they are.

Please note is my previous comment I did not say white colonisation I said "imperial colonisation' - I made this distiction because not all the crimes are committed by the "white man". Simply review historical ethnic cleansing by Imperial powers. History is full of subjugation & extermination of differing people groups in the name of religion & resources. James Cameron has taken real life events, albeit tragic history of imperial colonisation of aboriginal peoples & adapted that to make a fictional film. All fiction is a story adapted from real life paralells. It is not a racist film.

Except the majority of such instances of shared lineage on the part of Black people, is due to the frequent rape of female slaves by White male slave owners. Even Blacks who had one White parent were still forced into slavery and denied rights and property. So very very few Blacks in the position you speak of, have benefited from a lineage that connects them to a slave owner. You should read "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl." It will be useful to you so that you can understand the history.

As an additional note, I am not saying that every White person should feel guilty or give up all they have because of the horrible history that brought us to where we all our right now. But it is truly sad when people dismiss the history because they want to avoid the guilt. It is better to accept the history, respect it and find a way to move forward from there.

Yes but your underlying point is to cast blame on people who were born into the situation they are in,that is no different to me discriminating against someone due to the colour of their skin,neither can be helped.Ones actions whilst alive can be however and we should all be judged by the way we individually conduct ourselves not "our peoples" history.If anything this movie will awake the ignorant to the horrors of colonisation,pulling the race card will withold that lesson again and again.

I never said I was casting blame. But you can continue to be in denial of the truth if that so pleases you. The reality is, that the position that many Whites enjoy today, is due to the poor conditions they foisted upon various populations (indigenous Americans, Africans etc).
As I previously stated, this isn't about White people feeling ashamed. It is about accepting the reality as opposed to the classic retreat statement of "well I didn't do it and it happened a long time ago."

I find it sad that White people always tell everyone who has been victimized to just get over it. Slavery may have ended but the repercussions are still felt well our time.
The Civil Rights movement only came to a head in 1964. For people my age (26), my parents were alive and well to see the discrimination that served as an extension of the oppression of slavery. Don't just cast aside the history because you don't like it. We can all move forward but don't ignore the past.

That is the thing. Nobody is shoving it down anyone's throat. People mention social issues relating to race and people such as yourself show up and throw a fit because you don't like belonging to the group that is seen as causing the problem in the first place.
White youth today were not around to affect the decisions of the past, but they can affect the decisions of now. What about the Valley Swim Club or the Jena Six? Do you still deny White culpability for many of todays racial issues?

Who said being White makes you racist? I think that is the problem when people try to engage in this dialog. White people always feel that they are accused of being racists on some inherent/intrinsic level due to their ethnicity.
The problem is about the history of colonization, resource stripping and brutality against others (all realities that Avatar brings to light, albeit in a curious manner). Yes people need to move forward, but White people need to lose the "get over it" mentality.
