@030terror You have to consider the time period. Women were largely considered a means to produce offspring. They didn't have as many rights as men, they weren't considered equals, and men probably weren't raised with the idea that a woman could be their friend. Under these circumstances it makes sense that a man would choose a male companion. A male would be someone you could hang out with under any circumstances. He could ride into battle with you just as easily as he could see a play with you
@030terror nobody knows the truth about alexander. its all speculation. But Homosexuality/Bisexuality was very common in anchient greek times. It is known that Alexander had wives and mistresses. So to call him gay is probably wrong.
@blackcherrywoman not your imagination. but he was more jealous of roxanne than bagoas. because roxanne was the bigger threat to his relationship with alexander. was still jealous all the same, though.

Your heroes were great men; but don't get hung up on the fact that Achilles/Patroculus and Hephaistion were lovers.....there's no shame in that.....be proud Greeks your heritage is great.
I thought the movie was fantastic.....I loved the relationship between Hephaistion and Alexander........and they loved each other in spite of all other entanglements.
I like the movie no matter what critics have said about it. I think its somehow different from other historical movies like Gladiator or Troy. Btw does anyone know any good historical films that they prefer?
I read the facts instead of believing these lies. I have no right to take the stand against your opinion and the things that you believe. But I know, Alexander never came to persia, even god agrees. . The ancient Greeks are widely known for their homosexual exploits. Many ordinary people are aware of Greek homosexual love poetry, the same-sex relations of Greek gods and heroes, and the homosexual relationship between Alexander the Great and Hephaestion was created by some gay writers as well.
@Ackles4life Only eunuchs were allowed in the harems so none of the king's concubines could get impregnated by anyone other than the king himself. Eunuchs acted as the harem guards, as well as playthings themselves. If there's a male at all serving in there, it's guaranteed that he doesn't have testicles. :)

I posted only the Bagoas parts of the extended version for fellow Bagoas fans who might be interested in what was cut from the theatrical version. Bagoas fans gave my clip 5 stars. Not exactly surprising.
Likewise, there are people who enjoyed the movie. I am one of them. But it is nice to hear that your opinion overrides all.
why are people even mentioning arabs. there were no arabs as a recognised people back then. the empire of the east was the persians who are modern day iranians.
Bagoas was Persian, not Indian. Persia is now called Iran. He was Arab. There was no such thing as "gaity" (as you say to mean homosexuality)or "straightness" in antiquity. Eunuchs were a fact of life at the time and the ruling class had sex with anyone they wanted to, especially if that person was subservient to them. Please read a book - particularly "Alexander the Great" by Paul Cartledge - before you make unsubstantiated statements. Alexander was partial to men - it is an historical fact.
Yes, you are absolutely correct but since I was trying to explain the issue to the guy who made the ill-informed post, I wasn't going to split hairs. I just wanted him to understand what was actually going on.
Yup. I get that. :) I just banned the jerk who made the post for making a nasty homophobic followup, so both of our clarifications pretty much fell on deaf ears anyway.
This isn't India. The Harem was in Babylon (The Persian Empire). And Alexander was Macedonian, a culture distinct from, but strongly influenced by the Ancient Greeks. Both of these cultures were very open to homosexuality.
To be fair, later in the movie when they -were- in India, there was a culture clash between their way of life and the Indians, yes.
Alexander was documented as bisexual. Which is of course, our modern term that wasn't used back then. His sexuality was typical for men of his time period.
A eunuch is a male castrated before puberty so they are not fertile, nor do they fully sexually mature. They could then be trusted to oversee a harem full of women belonging to a nobleman and not get them pregnant. They were also often body slaves and trusted confidants, as Bagoas was to Alexander.
one thing is certain... we greeks are superior from you barbarians... so the only thing you can do... is to make jokes for man that you never,or you will have in your history so take good look at men like... Alexandr the great Leonida Socrates Ippocrates Periklis and many others and stay with guys like bush...or blair... WE are the rulers and you are.... only our little pets... SEE YOU
Ok...I've listened to the dialogue several times now and just can't get what the chief eunuch is saying at approx 58 seconds (after "...great king." Will anyone please translate? :-)
It sounds like "Oh.. he's went well with the years," then went on to guess his age.
The guy recommending is a eunuch himself, and the older Bagoas gets, the more he would probably start to resemble him. Time has indeed been good to Bagoas so far. :)
What is known about Bagoas indicates that he was in his mid-teens when he was presented to Alexander, not so old as this actor. Having been totally emasculated prior to puberty, he would not have been so muscular either. Most likely he would have been somewhat taller and thinner than he would have been naturally and his facial features not so masculine.
I basically agree with you. Even if there was no ..... Bagoas would not have resembled F. Bosch that much, as he was said to be a lot younger. The same can be said about the actor, who played Farinelli.
I agree also, and further add that there was no need to cast Bagoas as being so feminine. Young boys are different from young girls. Even with the castration, he still could have retained a more butch air. By making Bagoas more feminine, the film's producers made it a bit safer for audiences to accept Alexander's homosexuality. Audiences could regard Bagoas as a 'girl' figure rather than the actual masculine boy that he was.
It is sad, that I didn't see this scene in the movie, scene, which shows Bagoas's character, his temper, his pride for his motherland, for his forefathers, which make you understand, that he wasn't slave without will, but was strong man, man with honour.
Hehe, i like it when he declared anyone who wished could be set free to join their families and his officers pretend to do a runner. Shows the informal Macedonian way of treating the king as a first among equals, unlike the persian way when the king was all high and mighty and more distant :)
Come on guys, of course they were all jealous of each other. After all the three of them were vying to the heart of a single man. It's not easy for either one of them. Of course my favorite is Hephaestion. He has a right to feel sad. He grew up with Alexander and as per history was his first lover. Bagoas was smart but also very scheming. He caused a man to be sentenced to death because he disapproved of him and then killed the man himself while he was being led to the gallows.
You're mistaken about him killing the man (Orsines). The text says he slapped him as he was led to the gallows; there's no historical text that mention of Bagoas killing him with his own hands. Orsines was probably no angel, anyway. The account most people know of this story was written was a guy named Curtius, who was very homophobic and figured any "whore" would be, by nature, immoral.
Also, I should mention that Orsines' "innocence" is hotly debated. Aside from insulting Bagoas by calling him a whore in front of the whole court (which started the whole fray), a lot of people contend that Orsines likely raided the palace of goods during the time that Darius was ousted, and it was this (pointed out by Bagoas to Alexander) that resulted in his execution.
Bagoas was a loyal friend as well as a highly intelligent and knowledgable advisor to Alexander, and Alexander grew to rely upon him. Too bad Stone did not include that in the movie. Alexander as well as Bagoas was lucky that Bagoas survived his total emasculation.
I hated this movie. How could Hephaestion be jealous of a slave, and then of a woman (roxane), in a male chauvinist culture like the Greek one? This reveals a great lack of culture. And Stone accused American people of this! Outrageous.
I believe Roxane was the one portrayed as jealous of Hephaestion in the movie, personally. And I didn't get any jealousy (at least in the movie) between Bagoas and Hephaestion either way.
The Persian Boy novel, however, had serious jealousy issues. Roxane jealous of Bagoas (tried to poison him), and Bagoas jealous of Hephaestion (constantly).
Well, you know, pay attention to Hephaestion's gaze troughout the movie, especially when he sees Alexander with Bagoas or Roxane... and in this very video...
Poor Hephaestion...-.-

Hehe, i like it when he declared anyone who wished could be set free to join their families and his officers pretend to do a runner. Shows the informal Macedonian way of treating the king as a first among equals, unlike the persian way when the king was all high and mighty and more distant :)

You see I loved the third version of the film. I would have most certainly nominated it for best picture, it is truly rich with detail.

I'm a Bagoas fan, I rarely, if ever pay attention to Hephaestion anyway. ;)
