  • YMO guitar solos are numba one! Do you understand Mr. Ohira?

  • @Reishyn uhhhhhh . . . no. hahahahahah

  • @Reishyn This guitar solos by Katsumi Watanabe ! !

  • IN America

  • katsumi watanabe plays guiter

  • "This is Bell Telephone, where may I route your call?"

  • YMO were absolutly underrated. Yuki, Haroumi & ryuichi were all perfectionists.

  • you can tell how much ryuichi wants to let out a solo in this song

  • The guitarist played too much.

  • they need a guitar hero of this lols, or rock band or something cause this kicks ass.

  • One of the best songs YMO ever made =)

  • Lol if i lived back then

me: "hey dude, lets get high and go to this YMO concert!"

  • I honestly can't believe I only discovered YMO yesterday. And thank the lord I did. I must have been hiding under a rock for the last thirty years.

  • Better late than never

  • Dude. . .it's unfair that the US weren't able to be exposed to these geniuses. . .

Unreal--I mean listen to those chord changes. at 1:28

  • guitar solo with bass and drums is awesome!!! :)))))

  • wow a bailar

  • i accidently typed in "poo" and thats how i came across this awesome music and band.

    I'm glad, i made the typo. =)

  • That's fucking amazing bro!!

    best typo on earth!!

  • Haruomi Hosono is No.1 bass player in Japan.

  • Same reason the US ranks stuff.

  • The major-key at 1.20:D I like it!(H)

  • YMO do like those minor-major contrasts

    The chords are, i believe

    | Bbmaj - Am7 - | Dm7 | Gm7 - Dm7/f - | Gm/Bb C F - |

    Very beautiful <3

  • I can't beleive that it was almost 30 years ago!

    They've been still shining.

  • I can't believe I've only heard of them since yesterday! I want a high quality copy of the set they did in an apartment recently! if you haven't seen the vid FIND it! it left me speechless!!!!

  • It's good to see that there will always incredible music out there.

  • Super cool Fusion music ...Electronica,jazz,funky,asian tunes, all mixed with a great arty attitude,,

    Sakamoto rules !!

  • When I first heard Kraftwerk, I was terrified with the harsh robotic tunes that make you feel like a space POW. And that was in 2001. Didn't know they were big since the 70's. Talk about Futuristic groove. YMO sounded a bit Atari-ish, like Kraftwerk with sesame oil but can do soft melodic beats. I'm a Takahashi fan so my vote goes to YMO.

  • What a bass!

  • TVK偉い!

  • This is YMO without them you would not have techno/electro or any kind of synth music today. Many argue if Kraftwerk were before them however for pure whistle power and music enjoyment YMO are the godfathers of music as we know it today. Without them we would not have 808 state and raves etc. Enough said long live HAS-YMO and anything else they do.

  • Hmmm, I think the jury is still out on that one. I prefer YMO though. Kraftwerk are to german, lol

  • YMO did have a lot of influence. BUT Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream were around first.

Not to mention all the funk and psy rock.

Without the big 3 (atkins/derrick/saunderson) we'd all be set back another 10 years.

  • I really don't care who YMO is godfathers of, they made the best music anyway, so why listen to anything else?

  • This is tecno!

ymo is king of tecno pop.

  • Watanabe Katsumi, he is so cool.

  • このコメントの何がいけなかったんだろ^^;

  • this is not tecno, orbital is tecno, this is more like a electro, indeed is near a electropop.

  • I consider true electro a subgenere of techno.

Orbital is more towards the trance end of the electronic realm. Grab a copy of "clear" (the album) by Cybotron. One of the very first "techno" albums. Atkins is even known for coining the term "techno"

  • the masterpiece!!!

  • Many people define YMO as a technoband, and I choose to define their music to be some kind of techno aswell. They were inspired by video games of that time, they have a song called "Video games", so I would say I'm right at this point.

I would say that these are the ones that made techno. This I would say in fact is the only band that made good techno music, if you could call it techno.

  • This ain't techno. It's electro =)

  • Needs more cowbell.

  • This is awesome! Can someone tell me if they ever collaborated with or influenced Emerson Lake & Palmer, or perhaps the other way round? A lot of this funky twinkly keyboard stuff sounds like something you might here on ELP's 'Brain Salad Surgery'. Thanks!

  • I hope to get meet one of the members in YMO. They've made me believe in magic once again=D

  • fucking cool!

  • Wise words =d But, their music reached all the way to Norway, so I am happy!

  • they deserved alot more

  • It is a pity they disbanded! YMO is the only band that really could play real techno, all other "techno" music is guteral sounds from a computer or something. When thinking of it, they only were a group in five years, still people love the as much as they did it back in 1979 to 1984

  • found YMO as one of my fave bands, the MAD CAPSULE MARKETS covered solid state survivor...im now hooked! have since bought 3 YMO albums, they rock!

  • i found this on accident and i LIKE IT!!!!

  • accident? I'd call it a fantastic discovery!

  • Harry is a good bass player.:)

  • Marco Minnemann did a cover of this didn't he?

  • i love this fucking poo

  • true shit!

  • The guy in the back....anyone know if he is really using what would have been dated tech. even in 1979....a giant modular synth? Or is he mixing all the synths and riding volume from there?

  • I do belive he i striggering all the various Arpegiators etc from there....

    Wild guess

This was before MIDI i think

  • That's a good guess! That makes sense. I still wonder if he isn't also riding volume on everyone from there. That giant old modular moog seems to be something of a decoration too - as there seems to be fake lights blinking as well as anything that might be a sequencer.

  • oops! I feel stupid. It's just a string of Christmas lights blinking! Ha!

  • LOL, i got fooled too... well what can one say, advance scene lighting ^^,

    Well, regardless YMO rox!

  • there was CV/GATE and all sorts of sync signals already at the time and that technician at the back is tweaking the modular real time as there was no way to save/recall presets on those machines.

    genius

  • I wonder why the title of this song is "Tong-Poo", which means Eastern Wind. In Mandarin (standard Chinese), it should be "Dong-Feng". Or is it Cantonese or something?

  • The titles "東風/Tong Poo" and "中国女/La Femme Chinoise" came from Japanese titles of Jean-Luc Godard's movies. So these should be Japanese.

  • Oh, I see. Thank you for your notice.

  • Light, fluffy music, to be sure - but when it's so perfectly worked out and played with such 1st rate musicianship......I could listen all day!

  • that's kazumi watanabe at his best no doubt

  • Proves that YMO were just as excellent live as they were in the studio :)

  • i love the bassline

  • Thank you very much for posting this image. Katsumi's guitaring is really excellent!

  • I remember this from the Public Pressure album- now I see why the audience really cheered after the guitar solo during the bridge-THIS ROCKS!!!

  • Katumi Watanabe when it is young is a guitarist ..very good... I am glad to see the image of public pressure.

  • hosokawa-san saiko! \(^o^)/

  • my favourite good old tong poo! I love their mao collored red jacket. So cool.

  • the bassline makes this song

  • true. its amazing, all of the basslines are, even when they are less obviously good they really underpin the tunes beautifully.
