Just to clarify, Maximus's dog had NO name in the film. Some trivia: the dog's name in real life is Kyte, who played Wellard in the BBC TV series the EastEnders. It is a Belgian Tervuren NOT a German Shepherd. The utterance "unleash hell" is merely to unleash all the arrows,flaming pots,etc at the Germanians.

By using flaming arrows and flaming catapults, its intention was to create fear among the enemy ranks by seeing their friends on fire...lovely romans :D

The original version was "at my signal unleash dogs" due to the fact that the roman legions before the battle used to unleash hungry dogs against the enemy. But very few people knew that around the world and nobody would understand so when the movie was dubbed in italian they decided to change it in "al mio segnale scatenate l'inferno - at my signal unleash hell". They contacted the american production in L.A. which liked it very much so decided to change the original english version too.
