it's a recurring theme among funny broad trios: a dim wit, a sassy sexpot and a sensible straight-man: check it; on the film 9 to 5, you had violet, the sensible one, dora-Lee the sexy one and jane fonda, the dim wit. golden girls, u had rose dorothy and blanche; at mel's diner u had vera, alice and flo......... and to a tiny extent the same thing on 'living single'.
Polly Holiday {Florence Jean Castleberry} was one of the best female sitcom parts ever. Outside of MTM of course. Polly played the part so realistically that you really grew to like and care for her character. When she left the show it just wasn't the same. But i am surprised that over all these years that the three ladies {and rest of the supporting players} never got back together to do a reunion show. Only thing i can think of is that there must be some bad blood still.
I hated when Polly Holiday got her own show and it didn't last. I wish she had it written in her contract that she could have come back like "Florence" on The Jeffersons. Her show didn't make it either. You got to have a straight person to balance the funny one. Probably, Linda Lavin was very jealous because she was definitely funnier and got more laughs.
Polly Holiday graduated from my college, University of Alabama. She was a music major. This was way before I got there, but she did come and visit and ceremoniously used a shovel for a new building on campus. Unfortunately, I saw it only in the yearbook. She's from Alabama. She was always funnier than Alice and I have read that she was kind of nasty. When Belle came on, the original Flo from the movie, she quit. She didn't get along with Linda Lavin.
Alice -best tv show ever!!! I managed to buy every ep on dvd...Flo was the best character on tv history...I love Flo!!!!!!!!! I collect anything with Flo--tv guides,pics..
I love the story of how the writers originally wanted her to say a different "Kiss My..." every episode. She recalled trying out "Kiss My Honeydew" ( a writer's suggestion) and the studio audience was deathly silent. So, although she originally thought the phrase was bizarre and wasn't going to work, "Kiss My Grits" endured and won fans over.
Yep, I remember that. I have that season 1 of the Golden Girls.
Linda Lavin was a greedy person. Dit not like that Flo was the main person on the show and not her. Alice. So, Flo left for her own show. Alice was never the same. Polly also was in Satarota Fl, for 10 years. Not to far from my area. Tampa Bay Rocks. Carl
@PrincessGina30 You posted two years ago about Flo on Alice. She left the show because they gave her own show though it was short lived. I wish they had brought her back. instead of Jolene and Belle. I think Linda Lavin must have been jealous.
I loved watching Alice when i was growing up. Good memories of the family watching this and other great 70's TV shows. And Florence Jean was everyone's favorite character! There was something very down to earth & real about her. All the other shows in there entirety are on DVD now accept Alice?! What gives!! We need to hear "When donkeys fly!" again. God bless you Polly Holliday and thanks for all the great years of entertainment.
Parakeets you may want to know i have a dvd of alice it is only about 4 or 5 episodes but you take what you can get. I think it was time warner that came out with tv classics on dvd there is alice and night court (before they put out the first season) and a few others out.

was it Polly Holliday or Diane Ladd that Linda Lavin didn't like?
Alicefan94 2 years ago
I never heard that, but I guess it would be Polly since she became so popular. Now my question...why did she leave?

Shockin hair - she would have been half bonkable as a long haired brunette.

Its weird to think that she was also Mrs. Deagle on Gremlins. Such a contrast. She is one excellent actress.

I missed Flo, she seems [to me] better than Jolene or Belle. Polly Holiday was also on Home Improvement as Jill's mom.
