@Ballowall he started using MMA in his fight scenes in 2005, he likes incorporating it into his movies because its more modern and realistic than just using basic chinese kung fu unless it's an old type of movie like Ip Man or The Lost Bladesmen.
This entire movie rapes anyone who ever said that grappling or groundfighting wouldn't look good on camera. To me, this is better than any bullshit somersault kick any day because these are real techniques (the flying armbar a little unlikely but still, Rumina Sato's broken em out before in real life).
@WarriorBoy What the hell are you talking about? Those flying kicks do require techniques you idiot. Those are moves from different fight styles and not just randomly put together for the hell of it. Donnie is a real fighter and a master of many many styles.
@CrimesonWitcher: There are flying moves and then there are flying moves. Sure, there's been some flying move knockouts recorded before, that stuff only really works because it's so crazy and un-expected, but some a lot of movies have moves that are entirely gymnastic in nature and have zero possibility of working in a real situation (think Tony Jaa). Donnie is an excellent performer and has a commitment to making believable action, but is not a "real fighter" or it wouldn't be choreographed.
@WarriorBoy My friend I'm talking about in real life. He may not anymore but he used to fight all the time when he was a kid growing up in Boston and sometimes even today. Some fool always want to be cool and brag that they beat up a celebrity so he does fight still. He got into a bar fight not too long away according to the news papers in China. Some idiot wanted to knock him out but ended up in the hospital. Tony has trained but is not a real fight.
@CrimesonWitcher:I'm going to have to look up those incidents, I'm pretty sure I've heard something like that. No doubt he can defend himself, he's no slouch, but even I have defended myself several times successfully in my life, and I wouldn't call myself a great fighter, especially just because when you defend yourself it's usually against those idiots you're describing, not pro-fighters/athletes. What you train for is what you can do, and I doubt they would claim they are great fighters.
@WarriorBoy That's fair, no one is gonna know until a few of these guys fight for real.Jet Lee says he's never been in a real fight and John Claud Van Vamme is trying to get into the U.F.C. I think though I could be wrong about that last part.
@CrimesonWitcher: Right, that was all I was saying, I'm not trying to disrespect these guys, I've admired Donnie since I was a teenager and still do. Martial arts movies benefit the martial community by inspiring and spreading awareness, these guys are definitely top quality, it's just that most of them train with a certain idea or goal in mind, and often that goal is not skilled competition, but they still risk injury for our entertainment. As for VanDamme, he wants to get into a K1 match.
@WarriorBoy If you watch the documentary about Flashpoint, Donnie actually talks about this. He mentioned that some of the goals of Flashpoint were to spread awareness of MMA in film and prove that there is still room for innovation in the mostly stale Hong Kong action film genre, so he combined styles for effect. He also claimed to know some BJJ/MMA, but he did call over professional fighters and action directors from Japan and the USA for advice. They helped him choreograph the fight scenes.
@mewarmor990: Yep, I have the DVD with all that on it, so you're absolutely right. One of the reasons I love Donnie Yen is because he doesn't simply accept things that are said about martial arts movies, such as close-up trapping won't look good, or grappling, or whatever. Between Ip Man, SPL, and this (which have subverted all of those ideas) he's made some huge changes in the MA movie industry, I have no doubt he'll continue to do great work.
LOL! :) Louis Koo is just a comidian to me. He has never been a good martial artist to me. He always acts so funny in almost every movie. I really like this clip. Thanks for sharing.
Louis Koo over-acted a little. Tapping the floor makes him look more like as if he's in a tournament match. In real I think a person who got armbarred would more likely to tap on the fellow's leg to beg him to let go.
@GingerOreo - sometimes, even if you train in the sport, you might tap the floor without thinking. it's usually a bad idea cause your opponent may not hear the tap and just keep cranking until he hears the crack!
@womencrazy77 I've never seen a fighter who's stupid enough to think that tapping the leg would work in a fight, so no, neither of them would think that tapping on the leg would mean he's still trying to fight. And, as stated earlier here, tapping the leg is the only sure way of the opponent noticing that the other man gives up..
I have seen Donnie do the arm bar thing in several movies. And he looks great doing it. And I don't know who I wish I was more... Louis or Donnie in that shot.
@GtiFolk it's called a flying arm bar, a judo move.
