People like songs that they can relate to, and not many people can relate to how much he loves his piano and how far the piano has followed him. So, (and this is IMHO) it seems to me he has his few lines about his Hammer and Strings and then moves onto a topic everyone can relate to: feeling lost and like they're just 'losing their will.' That all being said, he does say, "I'll write you a lullaby," and then precedes to play the lullaby on his loyal piano. That's just my interpretation, though.

The song is about his piano. The hammers and strings are what make the sound inside the piano.

He wrote the song sort of as a poetic goodbye, as someone put it earlier. He had to lose the piano when he moved in with his high school sweetheart. He used that piano since his Something Corporate days, so naturally he's gonna feel a little attached.
