@dnlctrolee Yeah I just poped a tape in a player I acquired. I was greatly supprised, an 8 track sounds much better than it looks. Completely appropriate sound. Moind you that the player is an Akai, which might have something to do with it.
@RetroCaptain I would believe that they were better than cassettes of the same period, but Cassettes went on to further developpement and came to be high quality hi-fi medium. The folklore about how bad cassettes are, is complete bullshit, since they sound increadible as long as you get a respectable deck.
:21-25 Rudy Ray Moore-"Dolemite" famous classic XXX comedy albums on Kent Records in the 8-track format featuring (left to right): 1) Lady Reed, The Queen Bee-"Will The Real Dick Please Rise"; 2) Rudy Ray Moore-"That Pussy Belongs To Me"; and 3) "The Return of Dolemite." Moore sold millions of party records which allowed him to take the "Dolemite" character to the big screen with several blaxploitation movies. No Moore, no uncensored rap/hip-hop. Moore's product sold well on 8-track.
Ahhh the 8-track memories....listening over and over to Black Sabbath's "Volume 4" on a car 8-track player hooked to a 12 volt power supply with a couple of Jensen triaxials in simple boxes.
At the time I remember thinking how awesome my set up was however my views changed a bit the night I tried to get a home run off my older and sophisticated 18 year old girlfriend...I'd say the deal collasped when it got quiet and the 8-track delievered its normal violent "thud/smack" when changing tracks.
i have that sex pistols tape. except i have to push it in the player a few times to get it to work, other than that it's the best version of that album i've ever heard.
I have one of my dad's 8-tracks, somehow ended up in my possession years ago. It's the soundtrack to the movie/music documentary "Let the Good Time Roll" with artists like Chubby Checker, Little Richard, the Shirelles, Danny & the Juniors, etc.
I would like to mention that my grandfather, William P Lear, invented the 8 Track. For all you history buffs... He also invented the Lear Jet, Autopilot and pretty much the fist ever commercially released am/fm car radio! Hot damn! I cant help but feel sad if his name is forgotten.
Your grandfather, Mr. William P. Lear, should have his name spoken in both reverence and respect. He made driving fun! I remember that moment in my childhood, cruising down the New Jersey Turnpike in my brother's Chevy Nova as we listened to Kraftwerk's "Autobahn".
I would love to watch this documentary it would be great if someone posted the entire film on youtube. I have been using 8-tracks for 10 years and I have no intentions of getting rid of them anytime soon. Also its a shame that they do not make new 8-track players anymore.
When the magazine Total Movie & Entertainment existed in the early 2000's, each month it came with a free DVD of an indie/obscure film. "So Wrong They're Right" was one such DVD that came with an issue one month, and I was so fortunate to have been a subscriber then! What a find!

Good day
They are really bulky!
That and the "break" that sometimes came on certain tapes in the middle of a song.
Otherwise they are as good or better than cassette!
The speed is faster (better reproduction)
The tape is on a loop (no stretching of the tape like cassette)
The players are SO simply designed, any "Joe" can fix one!
If properly maintained they L A S T (until you cannot buy replacement belt)
The tapes are EASILY FIXED I've rewound M A N Y ! ! The sensor can be replaced/glued.
