But chances are we would have been alright with it all because of the propaganda, which was for the most part very effective for Germany in WW2. Yes there were many who were aware but those sort of people were generally not believed. Maybe people such as you an I would have disapprove of such things, we'll never know.

It goes back to the late 1700 ,1800's when its correct name would be the knights cross and was awarded for bravery and doing good in battle but then it was also given out in ww1 and ww2 (not sure on WW2) most vetrean soldiers had the iron cross.
