@boozygrogy You do know that Gwar came after Ganymed, right? (Not that I'm complaining: I fucking love Gwar --- much better band than those stupid Mentors...)
@CrossCuntryFranco - dude no way, "GWAR is a group of demigods from various planets that have been exiled to this pathetic mudball for hundreds of billions of centuries".......totally predating Ganymed!
"term I use for bands who didn't play disco" Erm, sounds like disco to me. It says "disco" on their drum kit and the show is called "Disco". This is certainly not "proto-techno-punk". It's about as disco as it gets. "Music drives me crazy" is much better.......
"as I've mentioned, "Disco" was this programme showcasing music of the times which started in 1971. It's music wasn't even Disco... it was pop music. (Even the aforementioned Roxy Music played there, as well as two others: Human League and Yazoo.)"
@GETTOBOMBER Actually, in the original record they did play their instruments. I'm actually making an essay about them and how they were influenced by various other bands.
@CrossCuntryFranco Of cause Ganymed was influenced by "Space". First reason: Their instruments were the same. The music was the same, and in one song from space also a woman was singing. Maybe it was the same one as by Ganymed. Second reason: Space did also and always wear masks by their performances. I have seen only one video from Space where they had their space-helmets open. All the other times their helmets were closed. Maybe Ganymed + Space were the same group ?
@GETTOBOMBER They were quite different member-wise: Ganymed were 5 members (with a 6th as a support member) and Space were a trio. Also, Ganymed were/are Austrian, and Space are French. In Ganymed, there are two leads: a woman and a male.
Also, how did you know that I was gonna mention Space in my essay? (I never heard of them yet, but I'm planning to!)
Neat bit of nostalgia here, thanks for posting - although I take issue with your description, this is totally disco. It's got all the hallmarks: Four-on-the-floor backbeat, R&B inflected "horns" (synthesized in this case), funky clavinet keyboard sound, string pad in the background, even a break with that famous disco rising chromatic octave figure on the bass (boo-DOOMP,boo-DOOMP,boo-DOOMP, boo-DOOMP) . Also, the bass drum and the big wall behind them are both labeled "DISCO" ;-)
Yeah, 'cause "Disco" is the name of the programme... but it is a good song. On another note: I think that those synth-brass horns were originally synth-guitars sounding like them, but we'll never know, unless the members of Ganymed reunite again for a "Classic Albums" programme on "Takes You Higher" (The album from which "It Takes Me Higher" comes from)...
And, not to offend here, I think that you should take a good listen to the whole album "Takes You Higher" and the follow-up, which is "Future World". Ganymed aren't playing normal disco, they're playing their own brand of "Space Disco", which is very much a mix of Synthpop, Prog-rock (the whole "Space" theme in many of the songs of those albums), and Punk-rock (hence the whole proto-techno-punk tag).
Even further on the whole tag: Disco has always been very much R&B influenced, but Moroder (with some help from Kraftwerk) decided to get rid of that (as it was getting too overblown). Moroder wasn't going to follow that plan, neither were YMO (both succeded), and CERTAINLY Ganymed weren't going to follow that plan: they also weren't going to follow Kraftwerk's gameplan either (there's photos of them with out the masks), so they followed a quirkier version of YMO's plan.
YMO's plan was talk about something different from what Kraftwerk were saying (alienation, computerworld, that sort of thing), so they chose to talk about Oriental topics. Ganymed followed that plan, but they changed it a little, deciding to talk about deep space (even throwing in some of Roxy Music influence in the whole 50's things: daddy's car, burger stands, the like).
When also listening to the prog-rock music that came before them, They rejected both disco and some of the punk elements ("No Future", the orchestra, the black singers [no hate toward them!], and funk music) and decided to follow YMO and Roxy Music's footsteps by recording "Takes You Higher" (and the other albums, though I've not heard the last one) and redefined disco, albeit with some prog and punk influences.
And, even worse for the "disco" argument: as I've mentioned, "Disco" was this programme showcasing music of the times which started in 1971. It's music wasn't even Disco... it was pop music. (Even the aforementioned Roxy Music played there, as well as two others: Human League and Yazoo.)
Also, though it is in best quality, it's not in the correct frame rate: the show was filmed in 25, and this is in 24. When you rip this and put it on a VCD, the 25fps is replayed as 30fps, thus giving them more real-time movements.
I mean to say, that it's shown at 24, even though it was filmed as it was (on 25). However, with our modern technology, we can see the 25fps in our screens like the Europeans do (although at 29.97, our correct speed)
Yeah, I know... I was compiling stuff for my "Moebius" album of anime cover songs (I'm a cover musician, I just can't seem to find the perfect time to start), and I came upon this song. At first I tried to ignore it, but I first listened to the full orch. demo then made my way up to the final version, which sounds NOTHING like disco, but more synth-punk.
So, at first I hated it, but then I grew to like it!
You're welcome.. I just got tired of my half-beat up rip I found on the net, and I found it on eMule months later, and now, it's here, by the grace of God.

Wish I could see the girl better, she appears to be very attractive.
I like all the guys with penis-nose masks, they remind me of Gonzo from the muppets.
The volume was too low for me

@PtolemyJones Luckily, someone has uploaded a full volume version of this. (i.e. The same video, but with the On-screen Graphic [logo] unblurred.)

In essence: Yep at both. She stands there like a fuckwit, but she's also lead female vocalist in some of their songs.
