Who would fucking vote-bot a video like this? Everything is so threatening to the ignorant and their balms against their fear of the impending destruction of their pathetic little egos. Sheesh.
The HD version stops loading for me around 1:45. I've tried reloading several times and it stops at the same location. I've even tried downloading the mp4 file (which btw, looks FANTASTIC in full screen mode--until 1:45). :-(
Do you really? Or is it just a nice dream that many people have?
Think about it, we can barely even get along with the different nationalities on our planet. What makes you think that another civilizations planet would be any different?
That we wouldnt end up with ten fold the amount of problems?
At the same time it could be quite the opposite, this "Other Life" in space could be nothing but helpfull. I wouldn't start wishing for anything till you have all the facts my man =p
I think we would learn that as a race we humans have no real diffrences and silly things like relgion would seam not so important. however the aliens them selves if they arived heve might see us as a sub speaces to be rounded up like cows or sheep or somthing. however now i would still love to talk to somthing that is not human, not that there is anthing wrong with humans lol
If it was a hostile race we would be dead or enslaved before we could do anything about it. But the OP said he hoped we find new life, said nothing about intelligence. I would be happy to learn of extra-terrestrial life. It would pretty much disprove all religions.
@JonO387, I would hope that finding intelligence would make the religious rethink some things, because they'd have a hell of a time reconciling this other species' existence with their beliefs.
But what if this race has a religion that happens to bear a passing resemblance to Christianity or Islam or (yikes) Scientology?
What if we find a planet teeming with life, but nothing intelligent? This could bolster the religious since humans would still be unique.
Actually everything you said except 'tension between different cultures' was speculation, not fact. But that's neither here nor there.
First of all, what form of contact are we making? Simple communication with another intelligent species would have no negative effects, because we can't fire a gun over a radio.
If we made face-to-face contact, I would agree with both of your statements. It would be good and bad. There will eventually be tension, but we would also learn a hell of a lot.
Thanks, Dr. J and EESA for the wonderful series! There's not a better tool with which to excise the 1st century minds behind creationism.

Just some more things to ponder.

And the comment I didn't explicitly point my reply to was directed at Dranoon.

Is Dr.Jays statement at 1:09 wholly accurate or would it be more correct to say "very faint and very distant"?
Either way, this is another good video from Hubblecast and Dr.Jay.
