I want to get a rat! I was holding one at Petsmart last night, and she crawled up in my hair, and sniffing, and rummaging her hands thru my hair. She held onto my hair for dear life and didn't want to be put back in the cage. She was too cute.
If you are Ok with other animals and you think you can get over your fears without the help of a psychologist, the best solution is to meet a living rat several times. If there's an animal rescue centre in your town, they might have pet rats, and the staff will help you. You can visit a rat breeder, or someone who has rats. You'll see that pet rats are clean, nice and playful animals, like dogs or cats. Most of us have some aversion first, but it is culturally defined, not instinctive.
I'm not sure if it's a sign of being upset. My experience is that most young rats do it. One of my fuzzbutts kept doing it for a while longer when I petted him. I think it's more of a sign of submission as he also did it when the others would groom him.
Mostly 'wagging' tails in rats means they are clearly upset by something. Mostly it's a warning of aggression in the eyes of a lot of experienced rat people.
I think its a sign of any intense emotion, whether happy or scared. When im petting my rat he will brux, eye boggle, and wag his tail at the same time. Clearly it's not always when theyre upset, I think its just a response to, like i said, intense emotion either fear or happiness.
i only caught one of my rats wagging once. i saw some of my rats tail slapping, but that meant they were warning someone away which just happened to be a cat that was already afraid of rats.
haha that's ADORABLE! :D<3
