Hi, Billy took his own life in 1997. :'-( If you wish to find out more about this wonderful man, you could do worse than check the Wiki entry about him - it gives a brief bio and links to several relevant websites, discog, etc.
Crikey......The trouble is she is absolutely correct...from 1982-1985..nothing...... he could have been anything.......... a talent unfulfilled....no doubt..
……. Thank you soooo much, BlairBooth, for having uploaded this Billy MacKenzie gem. I can never listento/watch this w/o crying at some point along the way ~ (•8-o
@caltontongs73 This was late 1990 on The Late Show on BBC2. Billy's version of "Wild Is The Wind" was four years later and screened on Janice Forsyth's wee STV arts show Dont Look Down in the autumn of 1994. I taped both on Nicam.
I always loved and respected Billy. What an amazing talent! I wish he got the credit he deserved. He was a major influence on me. I will always remember and love him. RIP Billy. You were an original. You always will hold a place in my heart.
People don't kill themselves on a whim, it is usually a result of deep psychological problems that are never addressed and simply fobbed off with prescription drugs. I doubt he really wanted to die
wow this is a great song, never heard it before. I also have never heard of the mutt doing the intro at the beginning, nor ever want to.. Nice one billy
This is wonderful song from Billy. I can't stop playing the videos for this and "Wild and Lonely". I love the atmospheric, jazzy feel to the songs. Either song could/should have been the theme song to a James Bond movie.
As for the opening remarks shown at the beginning, they were pretty rough. Everytime I hear these remarks, I just want to tell the TV host (whomever she is) to open her mouth and insert her foot.
great musicians, wonderfully sung by Billy. This is almost a lament, sad but lovely. It takes an inner emotion to sing like that, and sadly some of the previous comments reflect the commentators ignorance. Thank you Billy for wonderful memories, right back to your club country days. A masterpiece. RIP Billy
A sparkling gem but what a shite introduction...I expected Billy to walk off even before he'd begun... but he was gracious and jus let it roll off of him before giving us his unique magic. I can hear Scott Walker singing this in the 60s.
I agree about the introduction. Is this a common thing on this show, that the host makes rude comments about the guest right before their performance? Billy was creeping toward her like he was gonna cold-cock her. He should have.
Also, if you didn't know Billy, you have no right to judge. I have been in touch personally with numerous people who *did* know him IRL, who would dispute your view. None of us are perfect. But that's all irrelevant, now, isn't it?
And your words "the coward's way out" are very offensive, and show that you understand nothing about mental illness and depression. You clearly don't know the full story, and should not pass judgment.
I then wonder why you bother with a trite "RIP" after all that!
On January 22, 1997, depression and the death of his mother are believed to have contributed to MacKenzie's suicide. He overdosed on prescription drugs in his father's garden shed. He was 39 years old. Billy 10 years on ! i wish you were still with us ! a great man ! 1957 - 1997
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yes her had a unique voice, but he was over rated as an artist and most of his stuff is crap. He is also a selfishfuck all his life - from the studio where it was all about Billy, to the record companies where he would ask for a cab on their tab and take it from London to Dundee, to the cowards way out!! RIP Billy.
If you think Billy was "overrated", and that most of his music was "crap" (your personal opinion, no more; plenty disagree), then why are you even bothering to comment about him here? I could spend my entire day posting negative comments under videos on here by bands or artists I don't like, but I don't see the point.
This is fantastic, thanks for posting this. I've been listening to this all xmas and still love it! It's got me buying as much of Billy's output that I can afford. What a fantastic voice and he seems really sweet in the Tube interview, I wish I knew more about him.
