@inexplicablefully Whaaaat??! Reallyyy??! But wait, does that stand for all of the programs or just for some of them, e.g. engineering or medicine, or something like that? What are my chances with 87% grade percentage applying to French studies (Honours) as an international student? I hope you were not talking about Carleton :(
@MisSolitaryPoet idk about other programs, i just found that as an international student i had less of a chance of acceptance, e.g. i did the IB program which is underrated in canada, so they require really high marks for engineering (like 6's) which is impossible. my mistake was applying as an IB student instead of normal high school, with my 4.2. i couldve then gotten into utoronto. it really sucks.
THIS IS A FACTUAL STATEMENT THAT EVERYONE WILL AGREE WITH, I WAS IN OTTAWA UNIVERSITY BUT I SWITCHED TO CARLETON. @MisSolitaryPoet if you go to carleton you will not be discriminated against if you do not speak french. But at Ottawa University you will be discriminated against if you do not speak french
The one thing I love about this School (transferring from another school) is that they have a Video on Demand option. For some classes, you can literally sit on your ass and not attend and downlaod the videos from home for $50/ course. So if you don't wanna waste 2 hrs a day bussing, you can select some of these coures. But not your entire scheduale because you do want to socialize and meet people. Also... it helps those women who have children or those with part-tme jobs.
Which University would be better for business, Ottawa or Carleton?? is the International business program good? or would you pick a bachelor of commerce instead?
@Fatimurris i haven't done much research on this, but i've heard from some of the people i know, the intl business program at UofO is pretty good. but CU has the sprott business school so you should check out the site for it. and because it has it's own site, the info on it is much more in depth but also covers many aspects of the school.
Carleton plusses: research, program variety, transit accessibility, beautiful campus, many (small) scholarships available, if you have good high school grades you can halve your tuition.
Negatives: residence halls are pretty bad, tuition is rapidly increasing, lack of student space, it's a bit far from downtown (compared to Ottawa U) and there's a big disparity in the difficulty of BA and BSc programs. Also, many of the buildings (and the tunnels) could use renovations and upgrades.
@Kaylawrites Very friendly. Anything you need help with, somebody will always know what to do. Profs are also very friendly, and are always willing to take time to help you, or just talk outside of classes
Hi all, i have a bachelor degree in software engineering. what i would like to ask is it possible to get accepted in carleton with a GPA around 60+%? i am doing MBA now and my GPA for the first year is 70+%. so do i have a chance to be accepted? on the other hand, i dont have TOEFL but i studied my secondary school, college, bachelors and masters in English. will they accept me without TOEFL certificate?
@jackfatal2 You should proceed your questions to Ask Carleton at carleton.ca, because you can be sure to get reply back, and I doubt that you are going to get all of your answers here on youtube.
For Geography, specifically Geomatics, Carleton surpasses Ottawa U.
I was stuck before starting my program, which school would offer the best Geomatics program. Not knowing too much I decided to go with Carleton. Now that I know a significant amount about Geomatics I'm glad I didn't go to Ottawa U. Geomatics at Ottawa U doesn't even have cartography classes, only basic remote sensing, nor does it offer a Bsc. in Geomatics, only a BaH.
that's hard to say but i pick carleton at the end since they have one of the most advance electronic learning in canada. all their engineering course are full accredited plus they have a direct relationship with NRC and IBM. and plus carleton is better in engineering than ottawa u (that's just known fact. I'll send you a link to prove so otherwise). i am an electrical engineering at carleton so if you want to be object ask a person from ottawa u same question.
does anyone know what the minimum acceptance grade for the bachelor of journalism program is? i've heard a lot of different one from many different people, so i don't know for sure...
It really depends on how strong the grades are in the year you are applying (although there is a minumum cut off enough people apply or the program that you won't get in even if you are above the cut off). My friend was not accepted until the beginning of May with an 87% so one of he last let into the program (2008). It is a great program but very competitve, even once you get in. Aim for 90s to be certain. Good luck!
DONT go into journalism....u wont find a job the newspaper and news industry is dying fast..i can tell u dont read the news...second thought go into journalism
I swear to god. Everytime I read these ignorant comments about schools that are famous being better and blah blah, I feel like our society are raising brainwashed idiots. Do some research ignorant fools. Compare incomes of a degree from various universities. Look at what the job market is looking for. When it comes down to it, your here to learn. Not to sight see, and have fun. If it's just learning, carleton is second to none in teaching. So grow up and shut up.
It depends on what program your interested in. Also it depends on what type of a person you are. If you are independent, highly focused and moltivated then it just comes down to what the reputation is for the program you want(successful grads, what they do now, competitions won, scholarships etc.) If your new to working independently( meaning you've always had friends or family to encourage you. Then I recommend carleton, I have never seen a university that is so surportative with their students
I must also point out that Carleton is the only university I can think of where it is actually ethnically diverse as opposed to simply saying they are. Solid profs and a great experience is exactly what you can expect. Not to mention a great nightlife!
Its generally very strong in all undergraduate departments though most people choose to do their graduate programs in Toronto. This isnt because of the school simply because a great deal of students are international students or come from far away so the logical choice for grad school is toronto.
I'm from Calgary and thinking of venturing into journalism and communications. I heard Carleton is an excellent choice for that faculty. Can anyone reinforce that?
It is great for that (although it will be difficult to find work as a journalist). The journalism program is top in the country and the classes are very good. I am in a second year class now and there is a different speaker each week from a different agency or national newspaper. It is however very difficult to get into and stay in as the standards are set very high and it is so competitive. Good luck.
to be honest. it really depends what subject you're trying to major in. if you want to be an engineer, lawyer or politician you should take carleton. if you want something more like cooking, teacher, scientist etc. algonquin college is probably better.
if u're interested in science, medical, social science, than you shuld go to ottawa u. if u interested in engineering, journalism, lawyer, economist, and computer programing, den carleton is good. it all depends on wat major ur interested. But if u want to go into da best university of da two, den ottawa u is better overall cuz dey have more variety and known as full size university while carleton is known for mid size. i m a student studing electrical engineering at carleton case ur wondering.
@lifematch I would have to disagree with you about going to Ottawa for Social Sciences. I'm in Anthro at Carleton, and our profs are top notch, and incredibly helpful and supportive. I don't hear the same about Ottawa U's professors. I would recommend the Anthro program to anyone.
@CaraIain lol sorry that was a year ago, i didn't kno much. now carleton is top 10 still in canada so its theory should be a better uni then ottawaU overall. yeah i know carleton social program is top notch!
hey i got accepted to Bachelor of COmmerce in both Carelton and University of Ottawa...I'm really not sure which one is better, I get different information from different people, I stuck with Carleton, I am hopin i made the right choice,
anyone know any information about this topic please apply some feedback
Carleton is a great place to go to school at. Most of the professors are more laid back and let you call them by their first name. The campus is pretty with the Rideau river and canal on two sides of the campus. Nearly all of the buildings are connected to the underground tunnel system, which is great when it is super cold or snowy out.
Carleton is strong in engineering, math, physics, journalism, communications, international relations, industrial design, architecture, law, and humanities.
Listen if your going into anything worth while like engineering, science or medicine, then carlton is a bad choice, mac, waterloo, u of t, those are real schools
Sounds like you went to Carleton and couldn't handle the course work and maintain an A- average. Hence, you lost your scholarship and are now feeling bitter and trashing the school on Youtube.
Do you not have anything better to do? Probably not.
uhh no. carleton is a full accredited for all their engineering courses. I we a lot (and i mean ALOT) of international student in the engineering department spending loads of money just to be educated at carleton engineering. We're no. in aerospace engineering since carleton is the first skool to have aerospace in it. ottawa u is good for mechanics and waterloo is good for electrical. however all of them are full accredited.
wow, looks good. Ps, what are the best upsides and the worst downsides about carleton? I'm going there in september and I hear Ottawa is a freaking cold place (for someone who has never seen snow).
ottawa is more comfortable than southern china at the most time of a year~ i'm from there and i've been living in ottawa for 5 yrs~ i dont wanna go home in summer for it's so freaken lovely here~
I'm from the southern region of canada. Went to the University of Waterloo now i'm at Carleton. I too was concerned with the weather. It didn't turn out to be that bad. The only shit experience this year was the transit strikethat made me suffer. Few things I really like here when I changed uni was..1) I felt a lot more in touch with canada when I'm here. 2) A lot of diverse nationality and international students. 3) All the profs are friendly and not as tense as other uni(I've attended 3)
Yes! Carleton is one of the top schools ranked in Macleans Magazine. I'm graduating from this school this yr. and had the best educated experience in my life!
Listen guys i was interested in taking an engineering course at Carleton University because I heard it is better than the engineering programs at Ottawa U.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Trust me, you cant. I know three people with history degrees; one of them works at Wal Mart full time, the other as a cleaner at the Rogers building near Blair Station and the other one is living with his parents. These people are well into their mid 20's. Liberal Art degrees are the most useless degrees you can get. Go get a commerce, engineering, science or public affairs degree. You'll be doing yourself a huge favour and society. I don't want my taxpayer dollars to pay half of ur uselss degre
congratulations, your friends are failures! just because they dont know how to apply themselves to the real world and move on after getting a degree to either teachers college or a specialization cource, dosent mean everyone with a history degree is a fuck up, just them.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I know they are failures. JUST LIKE WHAT YOU WILL BE IN 4 YEARS haha. dumbass. u probably cant even do a simple calculation on a calculator. dumbazz. i dont talk to history students anyway, get lost. your honestly making me feel stupid just talking to you. HONESTLY.
who are YOU to criticize what program somebody chooses? It's their time and money spent on a subject they find relevant and worthwhile. And to complete your undergrad in ANYthing is great, but it's applying it later that shows who actually gave a damn about their education. I know plenty of Engineers who are sitting on their asses at home too. So don't bash liberal arts.
and to paintballplus20, congrats! I think you'll enjoy it here.
that's the thing with universities like Carleton U, people think that getting in is the most important part but in reality it is actually staying in that counts. Sure it's easy to get in but the amount of people in there will be so great that competition happens unlike schools like U of T and McGill where it's hard to get in but the ones that get in tend to stay in.
yap its so hard!!! if you want to prep urself, make sure you take a programing course in high school!! really really recommended. the reason why people can't even finish their B.eng degree because of the first year programing (ECOR 1606). trust me.
@lifematch hey uh. i live in the UAE and my sister got accepted to carleton, im going to follow next year, and in UAE there is no "computer programming" course. How badly am i gonna get it in the ass? im a total nothing in computer programming..
@talaster well really bad!!! its like learning another language. we started off with C++ so it was super hard for us. in computer programing they'll probably teach you the basic C program at first and gradually work ur way up. the problem is no one uses C code in this day of age. C++ is the new standard and its super hard but once you learn it every other programing will be easier since the all derive from C++. its really hard but fun at the same time, especially when u finish writing ur program
@lifematch don't be afraid but giv it a try, highly recommend it. in first engineering , 60% of the student body failed programing course. however i on the other hand loved it enough to get A- on it. however i knew nothing of programing and spend 8 hours of every weekend finishing writing my program. so i worked really hard for that grade. honestly get a head start, i m literally telling you rather ten ask.
Do not go to carleton! Come to McGill or University of Toronto. Much better institutions! You will need to pass an english language test get a student visa through immigration and have a grade equivalency test. Good Luck!
pffftt it depends on the program buddy. I had choice of bcom from uofT or carleton. I chose carleton. 1) they offer better co-op, situated in a less dense city and yet dense enough to provide ample job oppertunities. 2) They have an international busniess program. 3) Have great surpport for the student body, and the profs are more intimate with the students. I've attended UofWaterloo, UofGuelph so I know what I'm talking about in terms of learning environment.
McGill is not strong in undergraduate programs and the teachers are not as in touch with their students like Carleton. I went to a private CEGEP in Montreal and that is what the profs who said anything about going on to university revealed to the class. Carleton is strong in undergraduate, but McGill is strong in graduate.
Okay all you need to prep urself for carleton is to review ur calculus, chemistry and physics. know them inside out especially calculus! however the most important advice i can give you is that you should definitely take programing in high school. the reason why there is a failure rate at carleton is because of the first year programing course, its super hard!!! if you're totally clueless abt the subject matter.
Just got accepted today with a nice little scholarship!!!

We're no. in aerospace engineering since carleton is the first skool to have aerospace in it. ottawa u is good for mechanics and waterloo is good for electrical. however all of them are full accredited.

wow, looks good. Ps, what are the best upsides and the worst downsides about carleton? I'm going there in september and I hear Ottawa is a freaking cold place (for someone who has never seen snow).
ricardomaman 2 years ago
If you're living on residence, when cold you can just take the tunnels from building to building :)

3) All the profs are friendly and not as tense as other uni(I've attended 3)

blablubli18 2 years ago
Yes! Carleton is one of the top schools ranked in Macleans Magazine. I'm graduating from this school this yr. and had the best educated experience in my life!

Listen guys i was interested in taking an engineering course at Carleton University because I heard it is better than the engineering programs at Ottawa U.

what are u going to do with a history degree?
ottawabwoy 2 years ago
what kind of a stupid question is that? you can do lots of things with a history degree

HONESTLY.
ottawabwoy 2 years ago
who are YOU to criticize what program somebody chooses? It's their time and money spent on a subject they find relevant and worthwhile. And to complete your undergrad in ANYthing is great, but it's applying it later that shows who actually gave a damn about their education. I know plenty of Engineers who are sitting on their asses at home too. So don't bash liberal arts.
and to paintballplus20, congrats! I think you'll enjoy it here.

ive found that its easy to get into carleton, but staying in is tough. about half of the 1st years drop out by 3rd yr and more by 4th.
but hey, they have your money; what do they care?
mohman742 3 years ago
Y iz it tough to stay in there?
moe10291 3 years ago
that's the thing with universities like Carleton U, people think that getting in is the most important part but in reality it is actually staying in that counts.

How badly am i gonna get it in the ass? im a total nothing in computer programming..
talaster 1 year ago
@talaster well really bad!!! its like learning another language. we started off with C++ so it was super hard for us. in computer programing they'll probably teach you the basic C program at first and gradually work ur way up. the problem is no one uses C code in this day of age. C++ is the new standard and its super hard but once you learn it every other programing will be easier since the all derive from C++. its really hard but fun at the same time, especially when u finish writing ur program
lifematch 1 year ago
@lifematch don't be afraid but giv it a try, highly recommend it. in first engineering , 60% of the student body failed programing course. however i on the other hand loved it enough to get A- on it. however i knew nothing of programing and spend 8 hours of every weekend finishing writing my program. so i worked really hard for that grade. honestly get a head start, i m literally telling you rather ten ask.

@lifematch btw i m talkin abt engineering program.

It's good university...What I need for study in Carleton..?? I'm from Brazil...thanks...

I've attended UofWaterloo, UofGuelph so I know what I'm talking about in terms of learning environment.
arcanecraft 2 years ago 15
McGill is not strong in undergraduate programs and the teachers are not as in touch with their students like Carleton. I went to a private CEGEP in Montreal and that is what the profs who said anything about going on to university revealed to the class. Carleton is strong in undergraduate, but McGill is strong in graduate.

Okay all you need to prep urself for carleton is to review ur calculus, chemistry and physics. know them inside out especially calculus! however the most important advice i can give you is that you should definitely take programing in high school. the reason why there is a failure rate at carleton is because of the first year programing course, its super hard!!! if you're totally clueless abt the subject matter.
lifematch 2 years ago
meh...carleton is okay... i guess...wouldnt recommend for anyone to actually MOVE here to come to the school
