@Moonbeamchaos I always listen to the record too.. I love them.. I'm almost 19 but i really love Leonard's songs.. well there are some special memories behind..
This song is about a 'kept woman' forced to confront the remnants of a love affair- where she had forsaken true love for a life of privilege and comfort. As the song unravels, we see she comes to realise the foolishness of her decision and how painfully empty her life is. "He gave you a German Sheperd to walk, with collar of leather and nails and he never once made you explain or talk about all of the little details. Such as who had a worm and who had a rock and who had you through the mails."
@ejcurtis100 I was going to ask what does it mean, and as I was listening to it felt that life is driven by dark non-being, an excruciatingly painful non-place where you can't exist at all.
I'm 18 years old,but when I hear Leonard Cohen (well in the videos when he was younger) I literally melt...it's a pity that his voice changed so much by the years...:(
@scamaali When you're 18 you like his voice when he was young, because you're young. When you're older you'll like the voice of the man he becomes. Wait - you'll see...
@scamaali ...yes, it's sad. Like everybody, back then, he smoked. And it killed his voice. But it can't kill the words. And thank heaven there will always be the records. I wore out the first albums at least twice! He is the best.

This beautiful and pure. His voice gives me the sensation I'm sitting in front of him. Very intimate.

This is truly exceptional. The song is available in full spirit, it comes across as a wintery hymn of the soul's interior! I adore it.

Odd. A few decades ago, I took it literally. Very realistic.
