  • a truly worthy successor to Sagan

  • This made me want to cry.

  • @skeletonbitchify Me too. When i was younger going into space was something i dreamed about. Nowadays, that is not around with the kids of tomorrow.

  • @skeletonbitchify Anyone aspires to science watching this would come close to crying.

  • That slut next to Neil Tyson is so turned on, especially towards the end there

  • @carnalitious lol dafuq

  • @carnalitious That's a little rude to call someone a slut for no apparent reason. for all i know you could be a slut.

  • @carnalitious She kept slipping out of her stool.

  • I love Neil deGrasse Tyson but I had to fact check his trillion $ comment:

    1 inch = $232 dollars stacked ($1 is .0043in thick)

Distance to the moon = 225,290 miles (at Perigee)

Inches from earth to moon: 14274374400 (based off Perigee)

$3,311,654,860,800 to reach the moon one way

    $26,493,238,886,400 for 4 round trips

***Above facts are based off of NASA and US Treasury department measurements***

  • @Dustyroo500 and don't you think the force put no the dollars by their own weight would compress them? but wtf do I know I'm not an astrophysicist

  • @sk8sk8ss 232 dollars per 1inch is probably about as compressed as they're gonna get.

  • Bill Maher is a racist. And he doesn't even know it.

  • @kynismos: How do you figure?

  • Why isn´t he president?

  • Maher seems to be unmoved and indifferent to the passion that that Neil has for science and discovery... furthermore, the nominal cost of advancing knowledge verses bailing out wall street crooks should seal the deal.

  • It hurts the

"neurons in my brain creationists like to refer to as a soul"

that Neil is getting older. What will we do without him? Without people EXACTLY like him? We need science, we need discovery, we need to explore.

    We need a new dream.

  • @OccamsKatana Every day he writes, speaks, and works, he is continuing to inspire the next Neil Degrasse Tyson. In fact, I myself went to law school so I could advocate pro-science causes more effectively. I'm not a scientist, but I have still been inspired to both dream and do my part.

  • @PapaMagnum - Thats great:) I salute you for contributing to the cause! may your children become the next N.D.Tyson!

  • The dumb lady yelled, "Prove it." I wish he would take a calculator and prove to the that bitch and maher is an israel supporter jew fuck.

  • @numerrita

Do you understand facetious remarks? Get off the computer and talk to people sometime to understand the intricacies of conversation.

  • @TheSonofapickle I will talk to your mother after I am done shaving her back, you egregious cunt,

  • @numerrita

Kind of redundant with the use of "egregious" and "cunt", right? But my last comment may have been a bit crass on my part. Maybe I should take a class in learning how to deal with others. But in any case, my apologies for my previous remark. I am just noting that they were jovial when those comments were made; it wasn't a comment of complete and total distrust of what he was saying.

  • @TheSonofapickle You don't need to take a "class", but just shut the fuck up. Next time you have a thought, keep it to yourself.

  • @numerrita

Now you've taken it too far. I tried to be a bit nice to a rather barn yard animal like yourself, but seeing as you are both uncivil and stupid, I will say this once. It seems you have a hard time understanding others, and instead of trying to at least ATTEMPT to understand with such a minuscule mindset, you instead lash out like some animal whose only brain wave mechanisms only allow it to resort to a rather debase form of thought process, i.e. the banal emotions. Learn your place!

  • Bill calls him a "preacher" of science. He clearly can't hold back his racism towards the end of the clip.

  • @CambridgeHeights *rolls eyes*

    Oh, grow up.

  • @CambridgeHeights

Look.... I'm a person of color, and I didn't find it offensive at all. The fact is, Tyson was using the speech cadence you usually hear in religious preachers but instead of religion, he was talking about science.

I thought it was very stimulating, and not at all racist.

  • Write NDTyson in as our next President of the USA - 2012.

Why did people vote for Obama? incomprehensible.

  • @Trodua

Neil would never accept the job of president. Sorry to say.

  • @Numinous123 You spoke for Neil? If enough people interested, a drive to have his name written in the voting ballot would be a good idea.

  • @Numinous123 Very true. It's a shame, too, because he would have my enthusiastic support if he did.

  • look for people who replied to me saying he's an excellent role model for everyone, I know!

he's smart, funny and logical. what's not to like?

the fact still remains that black people are a minority in america, and minorities look to their own kind. call it racist, I don't care, it's true.

black kids need more Neils and less whoever the fuck is being autotuned these days.

  • Also, Bill is being serious when he says that. Just because you make a joke about something doesn't mean you don't care about it or are ignorant of it.

  • Neil Degrasse is a fool, keeping u.s. safe from the terrorist is the top priority always.

how many lives is that hubble worth? exactly. god bless u.s.

  • @Darusdei I don't think he was saying, "Take the money for troops defending us from terrorism and give it to NASA", he was trying to put into perspective how relatively little science initiatives cost compared to defense and debatable government bailouts of banks.

  • @toAdmiller well i was being sarcastic and aren't even american. it's just amusing how much you could've done with the money but instead it has all gone to fireworks

  • @toAdmiller Do you really still think that USA is in Afghanistan to protect you from terrorism?. See, this is the problem with thats facing USA, too much stupidity and ignorance promoted from mayor media.

  • @Darusdei You do realize the critical role communication satellites, space technology, and aeronautics play in the fight against terrorism, right? No? Of course not.

  • @seraphilm0 i was being sarcastic. personally i think the whole "war on things" is bullshit.

    ;)

  • "Brother Neil"? Why does Bill have to throw that in there. No one laughed when he said that, I don't think any one here would.

  • Bill Maher, his arrogance is nearly intolerable.

  • Here's your answer Neil to your question about "why not fund the Hubble" ...God created the Universe so we don't need to check...LMFAO. Who needs science when you have the Bibleright? Speaking of which; one of my "Born-Again" friends said she doesn't need scientific evidence or proof there's God...she just feels it. I said the only time "feelings" and God factor in for me is when I'm having an orgasm ;)

  • Comment removed

  • Just to clarify, I did the calculation and what Neil deGrasse Tyson MEANT to say is correct. He MEANT to say our NATIONAL DEBT (ROUGHLY 15 TRILLION) is 4 earth-moon distances. So really we could go there and back twice. A trillion dollars reaches about a 1/4 of the way to the moon.

  • @ThoughtGaze Also, he DOES mean the THICKNESS of the dollar bill. No balancing act needed here. Well for earth-moon distance you'd have a tremendous balancing act regardless how you stack it. lol.

  • He nailed it.

  • Neil, I fucking love you.

  • Neil Degrasse for president

  • NDT - making smart cool again, thank fuck, maybe culture wont destroy humanity. -.-

  • Neil is an excellent role model for young black kids.

    Much respect to him.

  • @zaelie Black kids? His an excellent role model for every kid!

  • @zaelie He's a great role model for kids of any kind...

  • @pac6010 lulz he didnt even realize the prejudice in his statement

  • @zaelie Why not just young kids?

  • @zaelie That was sort of racist, considering you're probably not black.

  • @zaelie No. Neil is a role model for EVERYONE.

  • @zaelie Let me extend even further: he's a great role model for many adults as well.

  • @zaelie Neil is an excellent role model for any kid.

  • @zaelie hawking is an excellent role model for young white kids.

do you understand why its racist now?

  • @zaelie yeah to point out blacks have you seen the living conditions I think for ones your talking about?... some might not even have the opportunity to even know as much as some kids know based on where they are, what living conditions and who raises them.

  • @zaelie Hey is an excellent role model for young kids period. its 2012 can we stop the whole race thing its kinda annoying

  • @zaelie Neil is an excellent role model for everyone

  • @zaelie He's an excellent role model for human beings. :)

  • @zaelie excellent role model for everyone :)

  • @zaelie

why black? americans and their racism - always have to divide the people. and then they have the balls to say that people around them are racists but not them in particular. oh the stupidity...

STOP dividing - maybe people around you will follow your example.

  • @skaloon You just made a statement suggesting that Americans are more racist than other nations. Good job leading by example and not "dividing the people." Go find a mirror and look in it.

  • @Dustyroo500

nah not really i used statistics to say that. on top of that - americans are the ones who divided themselves from the rest of the world. i'm merely pointing out a flaw in majority of americans - but i don't rate them as bad, evil or worse or whatever. just a flaw in their belief system.

  • @skaloon Please rethink you're arguments and get back with me. I would love to continue this when you actually start to make sense.

  • @Dustyroo500

ok i'm gonna go search for sense. gonna be right back

  • is that Ann Druyan?

  • Watch out guys, we got a badass here.

  • American Hero!!!!

  • @TheIslammiracle This is probably the most beautiful, accurate comment I have ever seen on youtube. My thumbs up to you.

  • william maher is an ass in this interview with Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Wtf is this preach it brother shit? Tyson is passionate about the cosmos as we all are. William isnt. You can see the disrespect on Tyson's face at the end. Watch Tyson, not Maher.

  • I would've slapped Bill for that last put-down

  • @aiyic The hell are you talking about?

  • @eltotoX the 'speak it Rev', and 'Hallelujah' bit at the end. Diluted Neil's speech, no?

  • @aiyic Quite the opposite, I feel it elevated him to a high status. It sounded to him like Neil was saying the the first real awe inspiring speech Bill has heard in a long time. We certainly do need a preacher of science like Mr.Tyson.

  • @DamienZshadow Exactly how I felt it, and most likely how Bill intended it to sound. I mean, Bill Maher putting down Neil Degrasse Tyson? No way!

  • @DamienZshadow I wish that were the case, but it smacked of patronising tone to me. Don't forget, Maher considers himself a libertarian, hence, is not big on NASA-esque bodies. Tomayto, tomato suppose!

  • @aiyic Yes and he's also a comedian and entertainer. Not necessarily a good one but he acts just like every other talk show host I have seen. Someone is saying or demonstrating something amazing and they always have to add some kind of commentary on the side as joke, even if it is supporting or apparently patronizing. Either way, I want to throw in a hallelujah every time I hear Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

  • The Trillion dollar bills to the moon 4 times thing.. I did check it out.. The moon is 384,403 kilometers away on average.. and a brand new dollar bill is 1/3 of a millimeter.. 384,403 kilometers = 384,403,000,000 millimeters divide that by 3 = 128,134,333,333.33 multiply that by 8 (4 round trips to the moon) 1,025,074,666,666.667 it is very close to accurate.. 1 trillion 25 billion 74 million 666 thousand 666 dollar bills would make the round trip to the moon 4 times.

  • @agronoxdt I did it as well and it seems one of us has an error. If a dollar bill is 1/3 mm thick, that means 10^12 dollar bills would be 333,333,333,333mm = 333,333km. Which is less than one trip to the moon if the mean distance to the moon is 384,403km.

  • @UCMolosser ahh he means width not depth... do the calculation using the dollar bills one on top of the other balanced (somehow) on the edge then u will see he is correct... although i think only neil would be the only one who could figure out how to balance that many on top of each other though so don't try it at home :p

  • @connorp2402 That would make more sense, but a dollar bill is 66.3mm wide. So 10^12 dollar bills stacked width-wise would be 66,300,000,000,000mm -> 66,300,000km. Dividing that by the given distance to the moon (384,403km) gives 172.48 trips which would be about 86 round trips. Still doesn't work.

  • @UCMolosser Happy christmas btw :) and :O im sure i checked it and got 8.3 or something i was going to give u the size i used as well just to prove :S hmm how did I get that as being 4 times lol ... i hounestly dont know tbh

  • Amen Sir. Amen.

  • all of those secret nasa planes less than the bail out good one

  • @imcrazy85 What are these "secret NASA planes?"

  • @yerk3 google it just like that

  • @yerk3 what people say are ufos

  • @imcrazy85 Of course. "SECRET nasa planes? Yeah, just google it". That sounds convincing.

  • @Giby86 yes dumbass it that in images if the person wants to see

  • @imcrazy85 Mhh? I honestly can't figure out what you just said. A little more grammar plz kk tnx bai.

  • @Giby86 go play and look for attention elsewhere plz kk thnx bai get it rigjht homie :)

  • @imcrazy85 Of course. It's always the same with you conspiracy theorists, when anybody presses you to defend your claims you never, NEVER manage to say anything meaninful. "yes dumbass it that in images if the person wants to see" doesn't mean a thing, I'm only asking you to rephrase it, maybe in understandable english. Can you do it?

  • @Giby86 you complete imbecile. that is not what you did. how does look up the nasa planes on google image mean nothing you idiot

  • @Giby86 use your common sense instead of it i meant its duhhh people call that a typo

  • @imcrazy85 No, people call that lack of the ability of making understandable sentences. "yes dumbass its that in images if the person wants to see" STILL doesn't mean anything. Are you trying to say that you can google "secret nasa planes" and find images that show you secret nasa planes...but only if you WANT to see them? Is that your point?

  • @Giby86 you are so pathetic lol

  • @imcrazy85 And you still refuse to answer. That's...very revealing.

  • @Giby86 wow

  • CONGRESS IS GOING TO MAKE US BLIND TO THE UNIVERSE. OH PLEASE DON'T LET US GO BACK INTO THE DARK AGES, congress, OH PLEASE!

  • I think Neil is wrong about 1 trillion dollar bills to the moon reference.

According to the US treasury, you can fit 223 dollar bills in a 1 inch stack.

There are 63,360 inches in 1 mile. That means that you can stack 14,129,280 dollar bills into a mile high stack.

The distance from the moon to earth is 225,622 miles+.

    225,622 x 14,129,280= over 3 trillion.

That means it takes 3 trillion dollar bills for just a ONE WAY trip to the moon.

Someone please tell me if i'm doing the math wrong.

  • @vigorousAtheist a guy who commented below said that perhaps Neil meant 'layed end 2 end' not 'stacked' lol

  • @Roonoon2

ahhh i see. In that case it would probably add up.

  • @vigorousAtheist IT'S OVER 9000!!!!!! lol

  • @TheWhiteShadow42

    ??? what's over 9000?

  • @vigorousAtheist It's an internet joke. You said it's over 3 trillion which made me think of that joke. Just search on YouTube "It's over 9000."

  • @vigorousAtheist i think he meant they were stacked vertically or something

  • wanna be

  • damn now i wanna an astrophysicist!

  • I did the math, you could reach the moon and back TWICE, not four times.

  • goverment no want awsome telescope. i think goverment afraid of us proving the big bang.

  • @lvl2saskue Looks like the government needs to invest in your grammar skills development.

  • @Skier1017 im trying to make a point retard

  • @lvl2saskue It's not obvious to me that you have a point if you make retarded comments.

  • ask yourselves "is the monetary system a good thing?"

  • what show is this and why was Neil on it speaking to a bunch of retarded farts? sorry im from spain so i dont really know what was going on, but i do know who neil degrasse is i love this man! that lady next to him is such a wannabe wise ass who only understands how to be a bitch, she reminds me of your typical "American buisness women" trampling others to get to where she wants.

  • QUICK FACT:

The thickness of a dollar bill is about 0.1 mm.

Distance from Earth to Moon is about 384,400 km.

    1,000,000,000,000 (1 Trillion) x 0.1 mm = 100,000,000,000 mm

    100,000,000,000 mm / 1,000 mm (1 meter) = 100,000,000 m

    100,000,000 m / 1,000 m (1 kilometer) = 100,000 km

    100,000 km / 384,400 km is about 0.26

1 Trillion of one dollar bill would only make 1/4 of the way to Moon.

Aw, why Neil?! Still love you though, NOVA scienceNOW FTW!

  • @SCOPLAChina However, if you lay them end to end you get about 970,000 miles which is a bit more than 4x the distance of the moon from earth. He misspoke and said "stacked" instead of "laid end to end." The example still serves his purpose.

  • @SCOPLAChina not thickness lol. stresed

  • Can't NASA just, y'know, lie?

Just tell a congressman: Uhh, yeah, we think we found oil on Mars....- If they said that then this time tomorrow they could afford a Space Fleet!

Oh and don't worry about them finding out, the astronauts could just bring some oil with them.

    -Bob Chipman, November 2011

  • @Josh123914 Give this man a Nobel Prize!

  • @Josh123914 The thing is a scientist wouldn't stoop that low.

  • WOAH HE SO SAMRT!

  • WHO IS GOING TO CHECK??? FUCK YOU

  • AMEN! Love him

  • Bill pissed me off with that "Brother Neil" and "Hallelujah" shit.

  • Once children wanted to be astronauts and visit the stars...now they want to be 'celebrities'..not celebrities as in people with talent and skills such as singing, dancing, acting or writing, no...degenerate common people who become famous solely for being famous and perpetuate their 'status' with their idiocy and anti-intellectualism; Where they are not rightly scrutinized and mocked for being such poor examples of humanity, rather admired and idolized..oh what a world we live in.

  • @TheIslammiracle You can't speak for children. The people that watch shows like Kardashians are housewives that want a little drama to break the monotony. I've spent a lot of time with 100's of kids and teens in the past year and most of them couldn't name more than 5 celebrities (I literally asked them to)

  • I swear the comments im reading about the trillion dollar fact to the moon, if that's all you got from a man that's awesome enough to bringing forth, the proper way to think about bringing future knowledge of science, to the general public. Then you definitely shouldn't be posting stupid comments.

  • inspiring

  • I watched this in full screen mode so I could not see the comments. I came here to say WE NEED A PREACHER OF SCIENCE! and look at that. Someone already said it and it's the top comment. So what do we need? I hope you see this Neil.

  • Obama? Romney? Palin? Bachmann? No thanks........I think my vote is for Neil Degrasse Tyson!

  • @e2004657 to add to that, not just for president but how about we have a congress and senate that has more than just lawyers and businessmen/women? More science literacy to represent our nation is a great thing! I would love to run for congress....but I am not a millionaire. It doesn't seem right to me that the majority of people whom hold a seat in D.C. are wealthy. There is something wrong with that. Wealth should not represent our country.

  • *Should not be the only thing to represent our country I should say.

  • Preacher of science, amen to that ;)

  • How can a Lawyer fix anything???

    Neil is spot on.

  • America HAS NO dream now.... 50% of Congress are Lawyers!!!! Fuck me... if there's any profession NOT known for coming up with wonderful motivational dreams... it's that crowd of maggots

  • When I hear Neil deGrasse Tyson, I know there's no hope.

In the US, rationality itself is marginalized so nonsense can take center stage...

  • ALLWAYS catches ones attention, Neil Degrasse tyson!

  • Sorry. But I don't think jokes about the crises in Afghanistan, brought on by the USA, is right. As a matter of fact, I think its very, very wrong!

  • You cannot put Michiko Kaku and Neil Degrasse Tyson in the same room because the sheer EPICness will destroy reality.

  • @nknoval "nknoval exclusion principle"?

  • @nknoval

For every Tyson and Kaku there are 1000000 Physicists that are better but unknown.

Get your mouth of out their cocks and pick up a science book.

  • @Romansteel13 No doubt there are better physicists, but they are unknown to us because they don't know how, nor care to make science accessible and interesting to us. Therein lies the value of Neil and Michio.

Though I'm not much of a Michio Kaku fan. He seems like a sensationalist who makes crap up to make science sound cool.

Neil Tyson on the other hand is EPIC!

  • Our debt is so deep not even light can escape it.

  • deGrasse Tyson: "The bank bailout, that sum of money..."

    Maher: "...could reach Venus!"

  • Dr Neil deGrasse Tyson is brilliant.

  • I love it when Neil is on the show. I always learn something from that cat, he's mad funny Lol. HE SHOULD HAVE A TV SHOW! Or does he already?

  • @Aldridge517 It was mentioned that he is going to start a sequel to Carl Sagan's Cosmos TV series from back in the late 70's/80's... I don't know about anyone else but, I'm super stoked on this! ^_^

  • @Aldridge517 Yes he does actually. On NOVA Science Now or something..it is mentioned on his website.

  • "...we're sinking money into a black hole" -- (lined with Greedy, Shadow Gov CON-tractor$)

According the war wisdom of Major Gen. Smedley D. Butler...We need "zero tolerance" for War Racketeer$ Inc.

  • NDT for president

  • Neil is wrong about a stack of one trillion dollar bills reaching the moon and back four times.

The thickness of a US one dollar bill ≈ 0.0043 inches

The distance to the moon at its closest point ≈ 221,000 miles

    0.0043 inches * one trillion ≈ 68,000 miles

The height of a stack of one dollar bills equal to the United States' debt ($14 trillion) would be four times the distance to the moon, which is likely what he was thinking.

  • @shear333

    Hey, shhh.

  • @shear333 i think he meant side by side..

  • @shear333 in length.

  • @shear333 Regardless, he's right about everything else.

  • bill dosent take him as seriously as he ought to.. im pretty disappointed in him.

  • 2:10

    Holy shit, so fucking true

  • Neil is not a politician and wouldn't be a good one. But he is an incredible ambassador for science, engineering, and space.

  • @shihalude A president in my opinion SHOULD NOT be a politician. I want a president that actually cares about future of the country and not just some douche who is out of touch with reality and is bought by corporations.

  • @shihalude agreed. He could be a great scientific adviser to any elected official.
