  • Can't stop listening this wonderful song...

  • A person old in years will not hesitate to find the meaning of life upon an infant. Those who take their place in the beginning will find the end.

  • @augustmaat

Just because he isn't singing a song about some girl in a bikini being his "Lady of Desire" (Wtf?) Doesn't mean he's not a good singer. Who's the successful one here? Leonard. So obviously his music is talented. Derp.

  • @augustmaat you cant compare damn near 50 years of musical relevance to what it is that you do. dickhead.

  • who will live and who will die; who will die at his predestined time and who before his time; who by water and who by fire, who by sword, who by beast, who by famine, who by thirst, who by upheaval, who by plague, who by strangling, and who by stoning. Who will rest and who will wander, who will live in harmony and who will be harried, who will enjoy tranquility and who will suffer, who will be impoverished and who will be enriched, who will be degraded and who will be exalted.

  • i know whis song from my father

and other songs from deep purple pink floyed

    ozzy

    black sabbath

    and more

  • @Mucuripe69 I know that's what I thought I love this song and Criminal Minds!

  • Criminal Minds !

  • why is this version so long when the one on 'the best of leonard cohen' album is only 2:32 minutes? what album does this long one come from, if any?

  • ever since i heard this song on criminal minds i loved it...

  • @ammy655

Same here. I just finished watching an episode of Criminal Minds.

I liked the song so I "googled" the lyrics. And here I am. xD

  • First picture looks like Bruce Willis

  • Leonardo de comprehension.

  • cohen just luks like al pacino hahha

  • Absolutely fantastic such a master piece :)

  • The song is inspired by a hymn specific to the Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur liturgy.

The use of this song in Criminal Minds is misleading. Tim Curry's character is the Angel of Death, and this song is about God's divine judgement over the living. "Who by fire" is from a part of the hymn dealing with God's omniscience, of his knowledge of who will die and how. It has little to do with God actually dealing out death to sinners. Curry was opportunistic.

  • great song

  • !!!

  • is the oud john bilezikjian?

  • That beautiful moment in criminal minds :) gotta love it!

  • Criminal Minds.

  • This song is not a translation of the great Jewish Yom=Kipur prayer but rather a take on how one is to die - makes you think. Great articles out there on this. What a spiritual man.

Go google translate it. This is just a part. I know the prayer.
  • I heard that he jumped a shark on a motorbike once.

  • amazing song

  • Happy yom kippur

  • <3

  • Time is running out. Life is but a vapor, a mist. Let's repent, return to God. No time to be messing around...

  • Tim Curry was the star of the show followed by this great music.

  • I love criminal minds for using this song :)

  • @lhaarbye1488 and it was so perfect for the unsub! I hope they put this much effort into every choice with the show

  • @lhaarbye1488 I hate Criminal Minds for being a terrible show. You should be ashamed to have ever learned this song was on it.

  • @ihatealigators

    HAHA.

    Go away.

  • @lhaarbye1488

In witch season hey used that song and episde

  • heard this while watching "busting down the door" (a surf film about aussie surfers coming to Hawaii) Great film, great song.

  • cant stop lestning to that

  • Elonyy -- he's Canadian. He is from Montreal, where the most common language is French, but a quick look around didn't tell me what *his* primary language is.

  • @arclevel

i lived in quebec most of my life, montreal is actually mostly english

  • @lilahjadee Aclualy, only west of Montreal is mostly english. The east is mostly french. Overall, 52,4% of the global population of Montreal is french and only 12,5 % is english. Do your research, dude... (Statistics Canada, for example)

  • I hate Yom Kipur

    its so boring

    cant lestrn to metal

  • is he an israeli?

because is last name is a jew name

  • @adartzt he is not Israeli (he never lived in Israel), but he is a Canadian Jew.

  • @stefaniarux tnx to you

  • @adartzt Leonard Cohen is French.

Not all Jews live in Israel.

  • how do i live in this song ?

  • i heard it on lie to me

  • There's at least one copy of this performance w/ live vid, which is v powerful to watch -- but the audio on this copy is infinitely better quality.

Thank you so much for posting it here.

  • I like the other version better :D

  • First came accross this song in criminal minds :D

  • @GoldenKnight422 Yeah, a lot of people (like me ;) ) did. This song is pretty old after all. I was really sad at the ending. At least the bastard got what he deserved.

  • @gilless429 Yea true but i to be honest I did feel a little sorry for him. All the stuff his mother and her "clients" did to him is what messed him up. But yea he still got what deserved because after all he did rape and kill hundreds of people.

  • @GoldenKnight422 To make a serial killer, three factors are necessary. The genes arm the gun. The psyche aims it. The environnement pulls the trigger.

  • @gilless429 Very true. But in the end it comes down to a choice too. Many "would be" serial killers managed to stop themselves by making the choice of not killing and instead they seeked psychiatric help.

  • @GoldenKnight422 Yes, that mainly is because they didn't have all the "requirements". Some have the genes and psyche but keep a hold of themselves because the environnement was not as needed to make them a killer. Some only manage because they have an extremely strong will, and don't want to kill, which means their psyche is not as needed. But rare are those who have the three factors and don't end up killing people. Anyway, farewell to you. It was nice talking with you !

  • In case you don't know, Leonard Cohen is Jewish.

The lyrics' of this song are translated and were taken from the Yom-Kipur prayer.

Yom-Kipur is the holiest day of the year for Jews- they fast and don't use electricity.

Its said to be when god's decide who lives and who dies- and how. now read the lyrics' again :)

  • @Elonyy Thanks for explaining!

  • @Elonyy wow thanks for sharing this. I realized the lyrics were about ways of dying, but I had no idea it was from a Jewish prayer. Now that I listen to the song again, the music does remind me a bit of Sephardic/Ladino music.

  • @Elonyy can you tell me the name of the instrument in the intro... i know there two and its not the oud

  • @elguanacochele its called قوانين - kanun

  • @Elonyy Equally though, the lyrics are still as powerful minus any religious view to it. It really explores the nature of death.

  • @mQtek I didn't say God exists, & neither did Leonard.

    The prayer, however, still stands.

  • @Elonyy So you pray.. why if you do not believe in a god? Wait, I don't care to be honest, just to lazy to remove this comment.

  • >Elonyy :

In case you didn't know it Leonard Cohen is Jewish, yes, but by conversion, by his own choice, Leonard Cohen has taken upon himself Varjrayana Buddhist precepts: so he is a Buddhist! However I love the Yom Kippur context of these lyrics... SO Jewish! But, thank heaven for the fusion of aspirations.

  • @Elonyy wow. excellent, thanks!

  • @Elonyy You mean he WAS born jewish .. He's boudhist now :)

  • All of the misheard lyrics I was searching and I finally managed to track down this song :)

  • I too am a "Criminal Minds" fans or should I say "Addict" and when I heard this song at the end of the latest episode I just had to find the song to add to my collection of Great Songs used by TV shows to bring to life the realness of what ever lesson the director\producers are trying to teach us.

Big thumbs up to the Director\Producers of "Criminal Minds" for this choice, it really brought home the ending of this episode.

  • @09mike1954 It was also used in "Lie to me" .. season 1 :) What series and episode was it used on in criminal minds?

  • @TraceyMariexx It was the first of the season (dont remember wich),with the bad guy - "Prince of darkness" that kills everybody in his way, less a lttle girl, that he projects his pass, thats when Leonard Cohen "enter's" the hole episode is with his songs. I dont know if i helped you because, diferent seasons in diferent contries.Never the Less,we have his Music :)

  • @nunitonick Thankyou :)

  • yep, I saw Criminal Minds last night . i googled the words, "Who shall I say is Calling" That led me to this incredible song!

  • I was so impressed when Criminal Minds used Leonard Cohen's music! I've always loved this artist. I also love Criminal Minds. I was about thrown into shock when I heard 'I'm Your Man' at the beginning of the 'Prince Of Darkness' episodes! Then they used Leonard Cohen for the entire two episodes! Awesome!

  • Lol, a cliche here but i so just watched criminal minds. kind of feel bad for that guy even though he was horrible, cant blame him. like the oompa loompas said dont blame the child, blame the mother and the father

  • Same here, saw it on Criminal Minds rerun just now and searched a snip of lyrics. Good stuff!

  • Watched Criminal Minds last night and had to look this song up, fantastic!

  • Since the new season of Criminal Minds just started here in the UK i'm just discovering this song. Shazamed it as soon as I heard it.

  • Cohen is such a talent

  • this song is actually from Unetanneh Tokef which is part of the prayers of Yom Kippur

  • ...& who shall I say is caaaaaaaaaaaalliiiiiiiiiiiiiin'~~ ? O_o

  • I would subscribe, but YT won't let me. The whole ridiculous story is on my channel page. I'm not through with them yet, though. Great video - I love this song!

  • go Criminal Minds

  • ¡ Excelente !

  • Too bad that they don't "make" such artists anymore. He's a genius.

  • cool dude mister - but dream on

    TMCD

  • beautiful poetry. Cohen amazes. Astounds. Never gets old. Makes my heart breathe.

  • Part II--No service, temple, church or sermon can iqual my experience from the deepest sadness in my soul to the joyful exihlarating feeling and everything in between, a music and a sound which travel from the most primitive hunting sound to the present toenrich with armonics and please the senses. At 73 or 76 this is a man who is virtue! Bravo Cohen! Praise your talent and your voice!

  • Tokingofskateop. Love your comment and understand why you say you find yourself lost in this song. I was in Las Vegas a week ago on a Friday, to enjoy and listen to this great man and his music. I felt blessed to be able to enjoy Leonard Cohen.

  • Kevin Spanky Long?

  • I am a Hindu and has nothing to do with Old Testament or New Testament, (and you are an idiot, if you mix those things up with such sheer artistry), yet I find myself lost in this song.

Man, this has blown my head off! I just regret, I wont be able to hear more of such great stuff anymore. A generation gone!

  • Been listening to LC since I was 13, I'm 50 now.

  • @kiwimac holy shit

  • Graffinsfan, thanks for this video, it's wonderful...

  • Incredible Sound,i know this man since 40 years.Unfortunately he's a Kohn.Nobody can imagine, how moch i hate all the Kohns,hehehe..More than anything else in the World, maybe the reason i was his last concert...

  • T.T such a good ending but i never wanted it to end...

  • haha... its like he pours caramel on your soul

  • @freedomluvbugs I've gotta nick that quote. Wonderful.

  • Wonderful version of the song, thank you so much for uploading!

  • I always was fascinated by this song on Yom Kippur, this is a nice interpretation of it- though I'm not sure if it's actually sadder when the cantor sings it with some weeping in his voice.

  • i like this version better:

  • @MRJMXR I understand why they do it. Not being critical of it. You could put Leonard Cohen in pretty much anything.

  • THAT WAS LIVE?!?! WTF!

  • @Klyons92 you bet!!! i think its better than the recorded version.

  • it´s from 1988. John Bilezikjian playing oud.

  • Who sings the version of this song that was on Criminal Minds? Where can I find that version?

  • @DubbedVideoDubbed @DubbedVideoDubbed I compared them and I think it might still be Leonard Cohen but the version used is the original 1974 recording when he was younger. If you know how to use it "go ur l. or g/ 5m3" remove the spaces in the address.

  • Now and then, cruelly, Life makes us cry …

  • De temps en temps, la vie, avec cruauté, nous fait pleurer ... alors je pleure d'espoir, d'avenir meilleur, avec Léonard Cohen, avec ses chants, avec sa musique ...

  • I now love Criminal Minds even more for leading me to this song. An excellent music choice for a very moving ending.

  • @bandiito16 I'ts kinda funny that they always use Leonard Cohen's music when defining psychos :P

  • @bandiito16 That is EXACTLY how I 'found' this song! I'm a CM fan as well! :)

  • @bandiito16 Me too. We in the UK have just seen the first episode of CM new series. and this was playing out at the end. Its amazing lyrically. So moving. Went stright on I tunes to download it. Can't get into any of his other music though. Could you recomend some of his other stuff thats as dark as this.

  • @GuidoParkie Sorry I have listened only this song from him. This is a great song though.

  • @GuidoParkie I also can't get into his music, but he does have another great song, darker than this actually, it's called "The Partisan".

  • MY SENTIMENTS, exactly! GO, Criminal Minds!

  • @bandiito16 Exaclty what happens to me....that episode in the end...with the prase of Buda about the Family and this music, makes me cry. Im with you! Peace 4 All

  • @bandiito16

Which season and episode are you talking about? I'm a devout Leonard Cohen fan, and I've watched a whole bunch of Criminal Minds, but I don't think I've heard this one in one of the episodes before..

  • @bandiito16 A very excellent choice indeed. Really every leonard cohan song they played in that two part episode fit with the theme perfectly :D

  • @bandiito16 you need criminal minds to show you this song? why is leonard cohen so unpopular, he's one of the greatest musicians ever.

  • @coifgx unfortunately not everyone can be exposed to music like this in the media-era we are living in now. I think it's great that something modern can bring back something special from the past :)

  • This is one of the greatest songwriters of our time.

  • *insert racist comment about jew/arab/muslim/christian without noticing the greatness of the song*

  • Just heard this song on Criminal Minds, and I cried.

    It moved me so much.

  • @ScintillatingZeroye

I didn't cry, but I agree that it's quite moving.

  • @ScintillatingZeroye

Same here - it's nice to feel human time to time.

  • @ScintillatingZeroye has every one got this song from criminal minds, it is amazing though and im not complaining because thats wear i got it from

  • exelent instrumental by John Bilezikjian

  • exelent instrumental by John Belaziken

  • why the arab nuances???

  • Three days later, he appeared in a dream to Rabbi Kalonymus Ben Meshullam, one of the great scholars of Mainz, and begged him to record the prayer and to see that it was included in the text of the High Holiday services. Thus, the legend concludes, Unetanneh Tokef became a part of the standard liturgy.

  • This event occurred shortly before Rosh Hashanah. On that holiday, as he lay dying, Rabbi Amnon asked to be carried into the synagogue, where he recited the original composition of Unetanneh Tokef with his last breath.

  • Instead, the bishop ordered his hands and legs amputated—limb by limb—as punishment for not obeying his word to return after three days and refusing to convert. At each amputation, Rabbi Amnon was again given the opportunity to convert, which he refused.

  • immediately after, he regretted intensely giving even the pretense that he could possibly accept a foreign religion. After spending the three days in prayer, he refused to come to the bishop as promised, and, when he was brought to the bishop's palace, he begged that his tongue be cut out to atone for his sins.

  • According to legend, recorded in the medieval commentary Or Zarua, Unetanneh Tokef was composed by the medieval sage Rabbi Amnon of Mainz. Friends with the Bishop of Mainz, Rabbi Amnon was pressured into converting to Catholicism. As a delaying tactic, Rabbi Amnon requested three days to consider the offer;

  • Who will rest and who will wander, who will live in harmony and who will be harried, who will enjoy tranquility and who will suffer, who will be impoverished and who will be enriched, who will be degraded and who will be exalted. But repentance, prayer, and charity remove the evil of the Decree!"

  • On Rosh Hashanah will be inscribed and on Yom Kippur will be sealed how many will pass from the earth and how many will be created; who will live and who will die; who will die at his predestined time and who before his time; who by water and who by fire, who by sword, who by beast, who by famine, who by thirst, who by storm, who by plague, who by strangulation, and who by stoning.

  • the words of the prayer: Natane Tokef

on which this song is based:

""All mankind will pass before You like members of the flock. Like a shepherd pasturing his flock, making sheep pass under his staff, so shall You cause to pass, count, calculate, and consider the soul of all the living; and You shall apportion the fixed needs of all Your creatures and inscribe their verdict.

  • Believe that the only religion of terror and chaos is the Islam, which in addition respects neither other religions, nor human rights, and that it qualifies as unfaithful persons other religions and persons different ,,,i don´t speak english at well

  • so.... beautiful !

  • something blunt

  • I fucking love leonard cohen

  • is wondering if Cohen got some of those

  • Who by something blonde?

  • @JivinJane

    it's who by something blunt.

  • Written about the 73 war in Israel

  • @alexdayboj i don't know bout that, but i know it's a bit in a jewish holy poem- oontane tokef.

  • @alexdayboj No mate, it about the Jews that were murdered in the Holocaust

  • @adamsv1000 "Who By Fire" based on a verse from a jewish poetry: Unetanneh Tokef. I think Mr. Cohen wrote this song in view of Yom Kippur war.

  • @77Merav

when I think about it more I think that you are right.Take care. Cheers.

  • @adamsv1000 I also didn't know :) but when I listened to the song here in Yt

I heard My old man mumble something from his room about Yom Kippur war. he was soldier then and a big fan of Mr. Cohen :)

    Take care :))

  • @77Merav

You should listen more to your old man I am sure that he has many more wild stories to tell. Most of old school Jewish people have stories. Shame that we don't always like to listen.
