I wonder if they would respond to a 999 call if someone complained that someone was taking a photograph of a street? The police are mentally ill.
My thoughts exactly, was completely stunned when she said that. I'm sure you're aware people are having the same issue here in the states. We need to stand up for the rights we have left and reclaim those rights which have been taken from us..
Lol she said you had to show her proof?! Its her job to prove your doing something wrong, and plus theres nothing illegal about annoying a police officer, especially if they approached you, cant be harassment haha
I had a police officer tell me that I couldnt film in the airport, I told him he was wrong and ignored him. he then detained me and took me to the airport manager and the manager told him that its perfectly legal to film in a public place. I asked the officer why he was targeting me, he said "because you have a big camera", oh so the laws say that if you have a big camera you cant film here, but anyone with an iphone can? WTF?!! Screw law enforcement, its your damn job to know the law dumbasses
Got stopped last night on a main road at the back of windsor, berkshire, apparently its a protected area and not allowed to take photos of my car there, ITS A MAIN ROAD. Amazing, they want the money of the public/tourist but these people arnt allowed to take photos of an historic castle or area. Terrorism act bla bla bla - gone beyond stupid now. They confiscated my car keys until they wre happy. I live in this area. And all this 'no photos allowed' started when!!!!!!
So at the end she states "that you'll find out what law you are breaking once I arrest you". So she could not cite a law that prohibits what he is doing and rather she implies that they'll just find or make up something to cite him with.
We have already received a number of complaints in relation to this matter.
The officer concerned is a Police Community Support Officer. She has been dealt with accordingly.
In addition, each and every Nottinghamshire Police Officer and our PCSOs have been reminded of the legislation in respect of street photography to ensure that a repeat of this does not occur in the future.
Yet again, police officers and PCSOs abusing their powers or police training centres misinterpreting the law. Those who take the sort of attitude displayed in this video should be sent back to the training school to retake their law exams.
She will find out what law when she comes to arrest you for it. She doesn't know - fucking piglet. They film us hundreds of times a day - and that's ok is it? Well done tommaddick.
Extract from the 'All forces guidance letter, 26/08/10, Andrew Trotter, Chief Constable, Chair of ACPO Communication Advisory Group' :
There are no powers prohibiting the taking of photographs, film or digital images in a public place. Therefore members of the public and press should not be prevented from doing so. Unnecessarily restricting photography, whether for the casual tourist or professional is unacceptable and it undermines public confidence in the police service.
The sad part is her brain is probably so full of police training (and she probably never reads books or learns about history or researches what's going in the world outside the mainstream media) that she can't even see how she's helping to bring in a police state.
The people who CAN see this assume she is the 'enemy' and so start insulting her (see comments here). This drives a wedge between public and police.

If it is not recorded then by all means yes you are right, but with evidence you shall win. If not, make an appeal, the truth will not be denied.
@SoDrigh There's been two cases recently where the police have been successfully sued, but it's not like the photographers involved had an easy ride of it. It took them months to get a result.

can I add this is not a personal dig at the female pcso, but a way of showing some still need educating in what the do's and don'ts are in regards to photography in a public place
Wonder why PCSOs are seen as pretend and amateur police? Could it be their sheer ignorance of the laws they pretend to enforce. Patronising, ignorant little woman, with a bully mentality and not enough brains to know her job.
@truffle, i did not edit the clips a single bit, they were two clips with about a 7 second gap between filming, sadly i dint film the first half as i was so shocked with what i was being told by both peso's I'm not out to personally attack the female peso, just educate the force and public that its not illegal to film or photograph in a public place, simple
@truffle65 are you going to take out a court order on every single shop you have ever been in with CCTV, or google who more than likely have you on street view somewhere too? You whine all you like, fact is its NOT illegal to take photos of anyone in a public place, and you have NO RIGHTS to demand otherwise. If you don't want to be photographed, stay at home.
There is (or was, it might be the one that were strucken from the books by the UCHR) a law that made it illegal to photograph a police officer if that photograph were to be used for planning an illegal act (or it might be defined as an act of terrorism, it's been a while since I read the statute).
It does not, however, apply in this case. In this case, the officer, or any member of the public has no expectation of privacy, simply photographing in public is not illegal. It's not harrasment.
Truffle could you please answer the question on how you "know" this video is edited, you clearly have a lot to say on the matter tbut nothing that rings of anything truthful.
You are right in saying they have to deal with alot everyday, but that is no excuse for trying to be something they are not, she does not have any clue about what she is talking about, she should have radioed through to find out if the guy was right in what he was saying
@truffle65 Don't understand? The author of this video is the son of two police officers (actual warranted officers). I'm sure he - and many others - understand all too well what they do.
@truffle65 Please link me to anything that states beyond doubt that it is "illegal to publish such images or video material once requested not to do so".
The PCSO may not be happy, but there's nothing legally she can do about it without a court order.
Incidentally, Nottinghamshire Constabulary have confirmed that the PCSOs actions were wrong here, and Notts HQ have stated that they will be re-issuing guidelines to officers regarding photography in public.
Truffle you do not know what you are talking about as there is no law anywwhere that states you cannot take a picture of anyone in a public place, that is the thing here, "public" laws are different in a Private place. All you need to do now is proove that the video is edited but I doubt you will be able to do that either. Learn the law before coming on here and saying what the PCSO did was right
Truffle, I really think that you need to learn the law a bit better before you make those kind's of comments.
Whilst defamation could be an outside possibility it would be almost impossible to prove as you have here a seemingly unedited, fluid video recording. It's tantamount to impossible for someone to defame themselves unless there has been a huge amount of footage chopping.
Privacy? Non issue here.
Nice rant - but you completely miss the point and you are wrong.
@truffle65 What are you on about? This was in the UK, where filming or taking still photographs of a police officer (or in this case, a non-warranted officer - a PCSO) in a public place whilst on duty is completely legal.
A police officer (or non-warranted officer) has no expectations or right to privacy when in public office in the UK.
On the other hand, a PCSO implying they have powers above those given by a Chief Constable or Commissioner is a criminal offense in itself.
Seems like trufle is the "officer" concerned. She still doesn't get it. Taking photographs in a public place is totally legal, whether she likes it or not. How did she get a job as PCSO with spelling like that? Wouldn't believe any statement she claimed to have written. perhaps that's why they go around in pairs - to corroborate each other's stories, sorry fantasies.
Truffle you would not be PCSO in the movie would you by any chance, as the PCSO has not got a clue what she is talking about and from the sounds of it niether have you
it is a PUBLIC place. You are allowed to take pictures. :P Sadly you give a person a badge and a gun and they think they are a god of some kind. I would have put her to the ground myself. She has no right to speak to anyone in such a manner and she is very obviously in the wrong. With the attitude she is giving you and her body language, you would be perfectly in the right to use force to stop her. (as she is armed and obviously emotionally unstable).
@streetmuggedbypolice lol nice :P They have them here and they are NOT responsible with them :P give a guy a gun and a badge and he is suddenly almighty :P
I don't particularly like slagging off the police since I can't speak for all, but this is a really severe case. The fact that she said "I don't know under what law I'm stopping you, but I'll find out when I could arrest you for it" I find that the most alarming part. So she stopped him for "annoying" her alone. Her lack of knowledge and her misuse of power are not a good combination. To top it off, her dismissive nature is not what one would expect from the Police force. Disheartening.
@lt1eg6 You are lucky enough not to have been at the receiving end of their " dismissive" natures then. Just don't let more that one of them get you on your own or they will swear whatever they want about you and if they haul you before the rent boy loving justices of the peace he will take their side every time. You will just be a piece of shat to rob as far as they are concerned.
Extremely incompetent. I hope they're disciplined on the matter. I have great respect for police officers, yet more and more don't have a level head, consequently they often believe they're right no matter, because they wear the uniform. In cases like this it's rare to get an immediate apology, instead it takes court appearances.
Absolutely crazy. I'm a photographer based in Nottingham, I grew up in Mansfield and have been working on a project there looking at the ex pit sites which will be exhibited at the Mansfield Museum next year. I'm also a very avid street photographer and was considering running street photography workshops in Mansfield next year as part of the accompanying events. I would be very interested in following the progress of your complaint.
Incredible. Incompetence of that level in any other job would be an immediate sacking. I'm not usually one to advocate the compensation culture, but I'd definitely be one to go for it on this case. I'd donate the money to charity. In the paper today, that young lad stopped by a inspector for the same thing won his case. She needs to learn her place, and some manners.
Too typical of the state machine in this country. Give them a badge and they are all powerful. Take their badge away and they are just little people with no knowledge or expertise. Small people who need a cloak of authority for their own self esteem.
Incompetent and unknowledgeable. Untrained and unskilled. Not good enough to be proper police, and now we see why.
And she added a threat about child molestation just to give herself some defence because she'd realised she was wrong. Pathetic woman.
"Don't talk over me" She should remember she is a public servant. Perhaps you should have insisted she called a PC, who by the way, would have known the law and put the PCSO straight. But you (like me) probably couldn't be bothered with the control freak any more. I too get his all too often and it really p?#~£" me off but it's mainly from security officers. Can you imagine a doctor saying "I'm not discussing your symptoms, it's really irritating"
She says 'I don't know why you insist on taking photos'
This is Orwellian double think. Taking photos is lawful. Therefore she's basically saying:
'I don't know why you insist on acting lawfully'
She's just abusing her job title to harass innocent strangers. Shame on her.

Absolutely laughable... and that was a pretty cheap and unnecessary comment regarding "photographing kids" towards the end!

Just seen this on Talk Photography.
Best of luck with your complaint. She not only needs more legal training, but also re-training on customer service and how to speak to the public.
