no no, its a feedback buster, when you play in front of an amp or in close proximity to one, the electronics/mic on a guitar will pick up the noise coming from the amp or PA system and the sound quality will suck big time, as for the tape itself, I imagine it is just holding the feedback buster in place for w/e reason

The tape is to keep the acoustic pickup from feeding back. It's the same idea as those rubber cap things you usually see over the sound hole on unplugged sets. Acoustics have a bad habit of screaming uncontrollably if you don't cover that hahaha

wrong! he probably uses a pick up that is taped onto the other side of that tape...

it's used to control the loudness of the guitar.

Actually Orwell, you're wrong, and fat hippy is right. Taping a pickup to your guitar would cause the sound to fluctuate bro. His guitar is acoustic/electric, and they often have feedback buzz when you play the low strings. Usually you'll see artists use rubber plugs, but that causes the sound to be muffled due to pickups being placed in the sound hole, so tape is the easiest solution and doesn't sacrifice the sound too much.

No, the tape isn't holding the pick-up in. It also probably isn't a dampener to reduce feedback like radioheadinside suggested. You can clearly see a raised rim around the tape, which means there's a dampener in the sound hole already. I'm pretty sure Matt Costa uses the tape to get that muted...'small' sound - like a 000 or parlor guitar. Kinda slappy... hard to describe... very 'Matt Costa' sound.
