for all you know that could be for another, harder tune in the set, and that's more likely, because this is Solar we're talking about, and he's playing with some masters.
Playing "outside the changes" is still keeping the form intact, just literally playing outside of the chords. This does not mean throw trane changes over rhythm changes, because, in essence, you're still playing INSIDE the changes--just in new chords, and MORE for you to play over! Haha! Outside is keeping the form, but not playing any definite changes over the form, hence "outside," so it's a different sound you're getting. At times, these two soloists would demonstrate their freeness as such.
Not really that keen on the bass sound. Sounds like a P Bass at times. Mind you it was the early 90's where most of the time upright basses had the signal taken from the pickups and not a mic.
The II-V-I's are there...Herbie no longer plays/comps [just] chords behind soloists; you will probably notice this listening to Wayne's solo - Herbie plays ideas to directly compliment the soloist.
In his own solo Herbie alters some of the original changes, as well as adding substitutions...
Anyway... the original form [i.e., the architecture] of 'Solar' is still present, the "alterations" are added to keep the music interesting and fresh...
@with9isavailable Talk about negative spin! You remind me of time my mother gave me two shirts for Christmas, a red one and a blue one. Next time I saw her, I wore the red shirt. She looked at it, turned away with a pained expression on her face and said, "I knew it. You hate the blue shirt." Oy. With some people, you just can't win. :-)
the bass player is monster

Le plus exceptionnel dans tout ça, c'est quand même la chemise d'Herbie.

Herbie and Wayne. Two living legends. Possibly the two greatest musicians of out lifetime still breathing the Zen air.

Herbie and Wayne are killin it! Dig Wayne's phasing, and how he paced his solo. Very cool...

Agreed. Also too many triplets and dead notes in the bass; more of an 'electric bass' feel.

@Justino111 does Wayne Sorter not have a long collection of mesmerizing solos? Is Herbie Hancock's style not unique and superior?
