So sad that all these great singers are no longer here and I mean great singers; with so much class and style, dressed well, acted well. You'll never see that armada of talent ever again.
TALENT X2 - I am so grateful that this is posted - Kids and adults today just don't have anything like this to listen and watch - I wish there were a TV network or show called You Tube - where ecclectic array of classic artistry like this can be shown ... beats most of what is on TV now ... and all th ereality shows ... Thanks Ella and Sammy RIP to both ...
I met Ella after here TV show interview in canada(1980) during a stop at a CBC studio near me.She stayed behind and came out to meet people but most had left assuming she was off to the hotel in a Limo. I wasn't in a hurry, so i was there as she walked out to the seating in a nice Blue dress with low heel shoes because she was tall. My gawd she was so kind and spoke to me like a normal person,we talked about things outside of show biz and she loved it because i cared about her and not her job.
Even the divine Ella had to cock an ear to herself to check her tune at the beginning of this song. Thank you for posting this incredible performance. Sammy gives it his all and has a grace note for everyone. He closes his eyes with pleasure when the drummer gives a nice fill at the end. He makes love to Ella during the song. He is just amazing, and Ella knows it and loves it.
And the two are backed by the marvelous Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Tommy Flanagan (p) Keter Betts (b) Gus Johnson (d). From the Ed Sullivan Show February 2, 1964.
What a great performance by 2 great singers!! I watched the Ed Sullivan show as a boy and never really appreciated some of the great jazz musicians who were guests on the show. Nice to get another chance. Thanks for posting this!!
I love how Sammy says to her: "If the waters' nice i'll jump in" I think Ella took offense to him saying that, as if the water wouldn't be nice, its Ella for crying out loud! So she gives him the finger and lets him know that the water is and forever will be nice. She gives him the finger while pretending to scratch her face just as she says: "Its s'wonderful" @ 0:39 classic lol.
Blacks back in the 40's and 50's had to sing as not to cry.... it paid off as a blessing from god. we have so many wonderful black talented singers ,,, voices like angels.
Ella F..the BEST ever in this video...with SAMMY...in her league...she is so humble and reall..complimenting Sammy like that...BOTH LEGENDS...we have nothing like this now...Thank you for posting...
@donnajazz - perfect pitch, no autotune. The real deal back in the day and now were stuck with talentless freakazoids like Ms. Gaga and and rappers who can't and never could sing.
Unbelievable, a once in a lifetime video clip. I was fortunate enough to have seen BOTH of them live, but obviously not together. I saw Sammy Davis in his broadway show Golden Boy and I saw Lady Time, the first and always first lady of song very late in her career in concert. She was so frail, they helped her out onto the stage, but she sure still could SING.
I grew up in the 80's so missed all this. But I used to go the second hand record shop and buy records by Ella, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Motown. My friends thought I was mad. There is no-one as beautifully talented as Ella and her peers. I was born in the wrong era!
I really like how all those oldies enjoyed eachother's succes.I mean..Just look how Sammie is glowing in the back and smiling and how much fun they ALWAYS have on the stage together.Who does that these days?
You should see the whole clip of this...It was up on youtube briefly...Sadly this clip is cut to pieces as they both sing it then scat it... Then Ed Sullivan sings a verse to them.....It was truly amazing ...shame that this isn't the full clip :(
This is pure a pure joy to watch, they exuded such quality of musicianship, this hasn't been surpassed. What's so admirable about good jazz is that improvisation is based on serious & deep musical knowledge, even classical musicians envy those xtra-cool cats & respect them 'cause they're a tough act to follow. They forged a legacy & are forever in our hearts. True art is a savior of hearts!
I always thought that I too was born in the wrong era, but thanks to YouTube we can be there. I don't know why, cause I grew up in the 60's 70's, that I should love these old cats like Sammy, Dean, Frank, Mel... I enjoy everything from The Rat Pack to ZZ TOPP. Just sit back, Bro and take in all the greatness you can. There's so very much out there!
Tommy Flanagan, piano; Roy Eldridge, trumpet. Bassist and Drummer, unknown. When I first met Ella (1968), Frank Delarosa, bass; Ed Thigpen (Oscar Peterson Trio, in its heyday), drums.
